I was reviewing the family of Richard Roberts als. Trevernan als. Jenken (bur. 29 Oct 1624,Gwithian) who married 7 Oct 1565, Gwithian to Johan/Jane d/o John Tremeryn.
In the process I may have identified a possible identity of the otherwise unknown John Tremeryn. Interested in the thoughts of others on this as Zenobia is apparently not an active participant these days.
----
As per the earlier research of Zenobia:
Richard Roberts father, Robert Jenken bur. 23 Sep 1569 at Gwithian had married as his second wife on 30 Jul 1565 at Gwithian to Jennet (____) widow of John Tremeryn (bur. 5 Jan 1588/9 Gwithian). John & Jennet Tremeryn being the parents of Johan/Jane Tremeryn, wife of Richard Roberts.
Zenobia did suggest in her research regarding Richard Roberts that "the name "Tremeryn" (also Treveryn or Trevernan) is a name of a place; Richard's will showed that he held land at Trevernan. John Tremeryn was probably an alias and he possessed an additional, unknown surname."
All relatively straight forward and supported directly or indirectly by either parish records or other sources such as wills.
for example, on the OPC transcription for Gwithian there is the following:
Robt Jenkin & Jennett {som}tyme wif of Tremeryn xxx July
BUT, then I noticed the following record in the Cornwall OPC (source Phillimore's marriages for Gwithian).
Robt. Jenkin & Jennett Lyne, [?widow], of Tremeryn. married 30 July 1565.
For some reason, Gwithian seems to almost the only Cornish parish where the microfilm images are not available online so I cannot verify directly from the source, but presumably if Phillimore had Jennet's name as Lyne, then it was recorded in the original.
This is where it starts to become interesting. To me, Lyne appears almost certainly to be a corruption (possibly even an abbreviation) of Lanyon/Lanion. (Even phonetic type searches support this possibility)
And possibly not merely a coincidence, there is a John Lanyon who is buried 22 Jul 1563 at neighbouring Gwinear.
While at this point I cannot identify the particular John Lanyon amongst the various Lanion/Laynon families, he does look to me as a potential candidate for the deceased husband of Jennet.
