_ The wedding photo shows Maud(e) Mary Bennett marrying Herbert Guthrie LUNN in New Zealand in 1903. The woman sitting close to the bride is Martha Jane Bennett (nee TREWHALLA), born Phillack, Cornwall in 1854. The women to the left of the bride are Beatrice Mary and Beatrice Hilda Bennett, and the youngest man at the rear of the image is John Trewhella Bennet - he died of wounds in WW1 and is buried in Terlincthun, France, on the Pas De Calais. The Trewhella name in NZ died with him at this point. The male in the image on the left is purportedly Matthew Trewhalla b Phillack, Cornwall 1853 - who arrived in NZ with his sister Martha Jane and her husband John Bennett and daughter Beatrice (Martha Jane is given the name Margaret in this record - I imagine either issues of literacy or accents came into play there), and settled in Australia - this is not my photo, so I am not sure if I am entitled to post it here - I accessed it from a public family tree on Ancestry.com - please adivse if I need to remove it. And, of course, the newspaper clipping gives details of their arrival in NZ. I know the names of almost everyone in the photo - with the exception of the two infants on the knee of John Henry LUNN to the right of the image - please let me know if you would like further information, or if you might know who they are. Ruth - for the moment it is only the photo of Matthew Trewhella that I need to comment on. I am certainly interested in details of your family back to Martha Jane but I will need to check back through my files to see what I have before discussing that line.
Two points to begin with:- 1. This photo is NOT of your Matthew 2. Even if it were your Matthew the dates are incorrect
1. This photo is that of the younger brother of my 2xgt-grandfather Benjamin. Matthew was born at Lelant 13th June 1841 and baptized there on 25th July. He travelled to Victoria with his brother John and arrived here in May 1855. The previous year my 2xgt-grandfather Benjamin arrived along with brother Christopher and all four brothers eventually ended up at Barry's Reef where they were successful miners.
Matthew Trewhella married Ann Dolphin at Blackwood in 1864 and died at Newbury (near Trentham) in 1935 at the age of 91. That photo is of Matthew sitting on the porch of his home at Newbury and I think it may have been taken by my great-grandfather William Trewhella.
2. Your Matthew was born at Phillack in 1852 and died at Bendigo 29th December 1922. He married Annie Hocking Thomas at Long Gully in 1882 and had a total of eleven children. I have copies of both his Marriage and Death Certificates although the informant at his death incorrectly named Matthew's parents as Matthew Trewhella and Margaret Jane. Matthew himself stated on his marriage certificate that he was the son of John Trewhella and Jane Chinn.
There was another sister who came to Australia as well - Catherine (born at Phillack in 1855) married James Stephens at St John's Church, Latrobe Street, Melbourne on October 3rd, 1889 and also nominated her parents as John Trewhella and Jane Chinn.
To my knowledge neither Matthew nor Jane ever went to New Zealand.
There was also one older brother. John Trewhella was born at Phillack in 1850 and married Jane Pascoe, widow (nee Bowden) in 1872. There were no children from the marriage and John died at Phillack in 1900 whilst Jane, 11 ears older than John, died at Phillack in 1905.
I suspect that between us there will be quite a few gaps to be filled so I look forward to our further discussions.

Fantastic response, thank you! It is good to know that my uncertainty about the photo was correct. I assume tho that the two Matthews are related with a common grandparent a few generations back?
I wonder if 'my' Matthew traveled first to NZ with his sister and brother in law to NZ before heading to Australia? Records in NZ show no one of that name marrying or dying in that country. I have not been able to find him on passenger lists to Aussie as yet. I have the record of his birth, and also Catherine's, but did no know about John. I will go and fill in some blanks on my family tree. The youngest woman, with the huge hat, was my great great aunty Ida Bennett - daughter of Martha Jane and John, and she raised my father and his brother when they were placed in an orphanage. I was privileged enough in the early 60's to have her tell me who each person was - but of course I forgot over the years. Her first son Jack Bennett Trewhella/Trewhilla Bromley was born in 1919, just a few months after his uncle's death - and he was taken POW in WW2,with nothing heard of him for a few months, eventually fleeing Italy to Switzerland before making it home. He never married and died rather prematurely in the 60s.
Did you get the copies of his marriage and death certificate in Australia? Would you mind pointing me in the direction of where I might obtain a couple for myself?

The Bennetts and "Matthew Trewhella' arrived in NZ in 1878, which fits in with Matthew's marriage date in Oz of 1882. As mentioned, there are no records of births, deaths or marriages of Trewhella's in NZ after 1878, but I have found a record of a Mr Trewhella traveling from Wellington to Sydney on the ship Tekapo in 1890, so unless my Matthew came to NZ for a visit - perhaps to seek out work, the second Matthew must have been a cousin or nephew perhaps. More digging to be done. Arrival Bennett Trewhella.pdf (145.75 KB)

Hmmmm??? - You are quite mistaken with that comment I can assure you! There were a number of Trewhellas went to New Zealand including other direct female relatives who mostly married and settled on the South Island. But there were also others including a family that was quite active around Thames during the 1870s and 1880s and there are still descendants in New Zealand today. I met some of them when I was in New Zealand back in 1994. There was also a family of Trewheellar in New Zealand and they are cousins of a family that went to Russia around 1815. You will find some information about them in the thread 'Trewhella in Russia' under the Trewhella surname forum. Why you have not found them is more than likely because you have 'blinded yourself' to the possibilities of variant spellings. Trewella, Trewheela and Trewhela are just three of more than 27 variations I have found in various documents over the last 37 years! CT

I was checking the details of the Shipping Notice and trying to find a record of Matthew Trewhella arriving in Victoria from New Zealand but without success. But I did notice a couple of things that suggested this might be the wrong Bennett family - particularly that it listed the wife as Margaret (instead of Martha Jane). There is also a daughter Beatrice listed but my records show that Beatrice was not born intil 1881 in New Zealand and that before her Kate Trewhella Bennett was born in New Zealand in 1878. I then found some other information I had downloaded on the Waikato and discovered that at the bottom of that information is the following:- List of Emigrants per "WAIKATO" sailed 19th January 1878 ---------------------------------------------------------- BENNETT, John 23 Farm Laborer Cornwall BENNETT, Mary I. 23 " BENNETT Benjamin 3 1/2 " TREWHELLA, Matthew 25 Farm Laborer " ===================================================================== We now have the wife as 'Mary J' and the child as 'Benjamin'!! So I did some further checking and found that there actually was a child born in Cornwall - Beatrice Mary was baptized at Gwinear 3rd October 1877 and I have now found that she died in New Zealand in 1879 age 17 months. So I think it is now safe to say that the family certainly arrived aboard the Waikato in 1878. But I still cannot find a record of Matthew arriving in Australia nor of his sister Catherine so I suspect that there are still many Passenger lists either missing or yet to be processed. Checking the PROVic index of arriving passengers shows several Trewhellas that I did not previously have recorded so I have even more work to do! CT

Sorry, should have been clearer, there are no Trewhellas of 'that' spelling variant that I have found as yet. But, never say never.
As you say, there were two Beatrice's - one born in 1877 in Gwinear to Martha Jane and John Bennett, and one born in NZ in 1881.
There is a Beatrice Bennett (middle name Hilda) who married a William Henry Watkins in 1897(she is the married daughter on the left of the bride), and died in NZ in 1953 aged 72 - (making her birth date 1881). Three of her children fit the ages and sexes of the children in the photo - Doreen Maud 1898, Carine Caroline 1900, and Robert Alexander born 1902.
There is another Beatrice Bennett (middle name Mary) married a George Shaw in 1913 - but the Cornish birthdate and her death date don't match up.
I can't find a Beatrice born to Martha Jane in 1881 in the NZBDM - do you have a reference number for that at all, or a another record I could access? And also a record for the death? I can only find two deaths of children name Beatrice Bennett in the BDM in the general time period: 1908/8287 Bennett Alice Beatrice 8Y, and 1898/7319 Bennett Theresa Beatrice 8M - and neither of those have Martha Jane and John Bennett listed as their parents in the BDM.
Also, could you please share a reference for the Kate Trewhella Bennett birth? That is very exciting .... If it is not another Beatrice in the photo it may be Mary Kate, and that may mean I identify the two little 'uns after all if I can track her down.
Keep the challenges coming!
So, yes, that WAS their arrival - but who the Matthew Trewhella might be has yet to be established.

Woohoo, found a Kate MEWHELLA Bennett, mothers initials M.J ... Father JOHN.. Bam. I have to say that MEWHELLA is the most creative spelling of Trewhella I have encountered as yet.
Hot on the trail...

And .... Beatrice Mary Bennet ... *sigh* (I have to go further with creative spelling, don't I?) - died 17 months in 1879.
So, the second Beatrice was my little red herring for the day. THANK YOU for helping me figure this!

Ok ... so I now know (as far as one can be certain) who each of the people in the picture are including the two babies. What a rush. I found Kate TRENHELLA Bennett - again with the creative spelling. The children are Doreen Maud 1898, standing, Carine Caroline 1900, and Enid Trenhella 1901 on the floor, and Ida Cathrein and Robert Alexander both born 1902 - all cousins, born to the two sisters Beatrice and Kate

You seem to have found everyone except for Beatrice Hilda Bennett I 1881 so here is that reference:- Registration No. - 1881/10388 Family Name - BENNETT Given Names - Beatrice Hilda Mother's Given Name - Martha Jane Father's Given Name - John Re Matthew Trewhella in the Waikato in 1878 - that extra piece of information I quoted tells us who he is:- I don't have baptism records for Matthew, Martha Jane or Catherine but by using the Census and then referring to FreeBMD (Birth Index) I know that they were born in 1852, 1854 and 1855 respectively. We also know that Matthew was two years older than Martha Jane so there are two pieces of information in the quoted record above that help us:- 1. the Waikato sailed 19th January 1878 2. Marta (Mary J in the record) was age 23 and Matthew Trewhella age 25 If we calculate birthyears form the ages and the date of sailing we have Martha born 1854 and Matthew born 1852 which tells us that Matthew Trewhella was certainly the brother of Martha Jane Bennett. All we need now is to find when he crossed the pond to Victoria. CT OH, YES - never rely on surnames to be spelt the right way in any records!! And when searching for a name like Trewhella you need all the imagination you can conjure up! (Even a name like Quick can be found as Qwik or Urick for example!)

No wonder they call you the terrier. Your mind is like a steel (make that tin, given the family history), trap. Thank you for that!

The only query I have now, is which of the Lunn brothers was Hubert's best man ... one of two options open to me. But that is for another board. In the meantime it is very satisfactory to have identified everyone else in the photo. Last night, my daughter Amelia (7 years old) and I had a lime juice cordial drink - the same brand that I used to drink with Ida in her tiny flat in Palmerston North in the 1960's - and I showed her, just as Ida (or Aunty Ganny as I knew her) had shown me, the wedding photo above - and also Jack's photo (my avatar) so that she could see the boy he was in 1903 and the man he was when he went to war. She and I have made a pilgrimage to Jack's grave a few times on behalf of Martha Jane and John and Jack's sisters - none of whom were able to get there. And one day soon, she will walk the ground of Towednack and Zennor and Phillack with me as well. It is so good to have closed the loop.

Still unable to find a record of Matthew Trewhella's arrival in Australia but I think I have now found younger sister Catherine. 'Kate' Trewhella age 28 arrived in Melbourne in November 1884 aboard the 'Orient'.

And when you are in Zennor, call into the "Tinner's Arms" and have a lime juice cordial there...or something stronger if the constitution permits! Read up on the "Mermaid of Zennor" legend, which features a Matty Trewhella in the tale. Maybe share the tale with your daughter, it has a couple of versions. Just google mermaid of zennor!
