Good morning
I know from a birth certificate for Roselene Mary Glasson at Mount Pleasant, Phillack, of the 26th September 1916 that her father was said to be John Glasson, a private in the Royal Engineers also a general labourer. What I am not so sure about is the fact that her mother was actually married to him although the certificate lists her as Mary Emma Glasson, late Tremelling, formerly Philp. Mary's first marriage to Charles Tremelling in 1904 is relatively easy to find and it occurred at St Elwyn in Hayle.
It is the marriage to John Glasson that is not so easy to find, as from that I could identify exactly which John Glasson is mentioned here.
I did search the War records and found two John Glassons who were in the Royal Engineers - both were named John Thomas Glasson, one of Ludgvan and one of Redruth, and the first was killed in 1915 and the second was killed four days before the birth of Roselene. However, at this stage I believe both Johns are accounted for each having a wife and at least one child. That does not mean however that the John Thomas who died in 1916 could not be responsible for this birth and the stated marriage to Mary Emma never occurred.
I would be interested to know if anybody can find a marriage between John Glasson and Mary Emma Tremelling, nee Philp.

Morning Lannanta - I have had a bit of a look around but can find no sign of a marriage. Does the birth certificate suggest there was definitely a marriage involved or is there perhaps a little clue that might suggest otherwise?
The only thing I found in FreeBMD that might be of some help is that there appears to have been just the one child to this couple.

Yes definitely CT - the man who filled out that form was led to believe, rightly or wrongly, that the mother was Mary Emma Glasson, the widow of Mr Tremelling and daughter of Mr Philp.

Hi lannanta,
The national probate calender on Ancestry has the following entry
"TREMELLING or GLASSON Mary Emma widow died 18 May 1962 at Bodmin. Probate to Roselene Mary Davey married woman."
The corresponding death record on BMD has her recorded as TREMELLING
Roselene Glasson marries Reginald Virgin in 1939 Roselene Virgin marries Frederick Davey in 1954
Cheers
Simon

Good morning Simon Yes thank you for that ... it is telling me what I am not particularly keen to hear.... I do not think there was a marriage and that opens up the possibility of John Glasson being one of the two soldiers mentioned earlier and that will be hard to prove I think. I have the information on Roselene's two marriages and I believe that a son from the first marriage is alive and well in Hayle.
I will get her death certificate just to see if it helps but I doubt it.

Yes I am hoping that they will at least confirm who her father was so that I know it is a certain John Glasson and anything from there will be a bonus. I have a very good database of BDMs now so I am hoping that sooner or later he will be unable to stay hiding. Saying that if he was a ship passing in the night on his way to dig a trench in France then that will be much more difficult. Thanks for your help Simon.

Hello Roadrunner Thanks for your interest. Yes I know these two boys and just recently I was in touch with a gentleman from Ludgvan who has been researching the men on the memorial and has recorded their details in a document available for reading in the church. John Thomas Glasson belonged to the 251st Tunnellers and was the husband of Mary nee Mace, father of five children, living at Devonport. Robert Glasson, his brother, was from the 175th Tunnellers. It must have been a very sad week for the family in September 1916 - one son lost on the 22nd and the other on the 27th.
As a general matter of interest they were two sons of Joseph Glasson and Mary Ann Glasson, formerly LAVERS.

Good afternoon
The two marriage certificates both state that the father John Glasson was deceased at the time of the marriage. They also both state that he was a general labourer. Given that the mother Mary Glasson was alive at the time of both marriages, and indeed a witness at the later marriage, it is more than likely that she supplied this information.
Other than that the certificates shed no light on who John was. I have had a quick glance at the 1911 census and the John Thomas Glasson who died in 1916, and who had a family, was listed as a labourer.

Lannanta - any chance of your John Glasson being Thomas John Glasson??
There was a Thomas John Glasson working on his father's farm at Fraddam, Gwinear in 1911. He was then age 28 and son of Thomas and Martha Glasson with siblings including, interestingly, a sister named Rosalie!

Okay - it was worth checking just to make sure all bases are covered. You mentioned two John Glassons in the Royal Engineers and I think you mentioned that you had wife and at least one child for each? If you have not already done so then it might be worth going over that information again to see if it is all accurate. If it is then it seems to leave a black hole hiding the John you are looking for or else there is possibly yet another hidden somewhere in the Army records. CT

Morning CT
I did what you suggested and looked again at the two John Glassons in the R E that I was aware of. I thought that I had discovered the man himself... in his Army papers the John Thomas Glasson killed in December 1915 was paying maintenance for his illegitimate child Dora M. Penalurick, daughter of Joanna May Tresidder Penalurick. I started a wee hunt and then realised.. he was killed on the 10th December 1915 - Roselene was born on the 26th September 1916. He could not be the father although there is still a slight chance he could be the John referred to in the birth.
That leaves the John Thomas Glasson of Ludgvan - husband of Mary Mace of Falmouth and son of Joseph of Long Rock. I cannot find his full service record as I did for the previous John, and that tells me that if there is a third John Glasson then I simply may not be able to see his record either.

Well that would seem to make things a little difficult! There is one further question that I don't think has been asked. I don't know that the answer will be of much help but - who was the informant on the Birth Certificate for Rosalene?? Also - what Glassons were in the area of Mount Pleasant, Phillack in 1911?? John may have been from anywhere but then he may also have lived right next door. CT
