I think I have her Mary Anne Rowe daughter of William and Ann of Trevescan, bap Sennen 1831 married James Barnes at Sennen 20 jan 1855 1861 RG 9; Piece: 1598; Folio: 24; Page: 9; James, Mary and three children including Elizabeth Ann age 1.
I suspect that Elizabeth Ann's full name was Elizabeth Ann Rowe Barnes but the surname got missed off her marriage entry

I just lost about 3 hours work because I hit the backspace button with the cursor on the wrong part of the @#$^%$^#@%^^ screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However - I have solved the problem!! I will now have to précis what I found but basically I used the information about 'mother' Mary A Barns (or Harvey). I was reasonably sure Barnes would be correct and Harvey written in 1901 because the enumerator only knew she was Mary Ann and she was the mother of the head of household. Anyway ...... The information was that Mary was born about 1830/1 at Sennen or St Just so I started working back through the Census. In 1881 I found Mary at Treeve, Sennen employed as servant to Robert James Rae, Rector of Sennen. Mary was widowed, age 50 and born Sennen. I also found an Elizabeth A Barnes employed as a servant to Henry and Matilda Thomas at Fore Street St Just. Elizabeth was born Sennen and age 21. In 1871 I found Mary, age 40, born Sennen and again a widow. This time she was a servant to John and Amelia Symons at Mayor House, Sennen. Not far away at Treeve was a William Barnes age 12 who was a servant to James and Mary Wallis. I could not find Elizabeth in this Census. 1861 is the good one:- 1861 Census Gurland, St Just James Barnes, head, mar, 30, miner, born St Just Mary Ann Barnes, wife, mar, 30, born Sennen William Rowe Barnes, son, 3, born St Just Elizabeth Ann Barnes, daughter, 1, born St Just James Barnes, son, 8 months, born St Just James Barnes, miner of St Just, married MaryAnn Rowe, daughter of William Rowe, Sexton, 20th January 1855 at St Just William Rowe son of James and Mary Ann Barnes of St Just baptized 7th February 1858 St Just Bible Christian Chapel I could not find baptisms for Elizabeth Ann or James but I have found that is far from unusual for this period at St Just. Probably baptized in one of the Chapels for which records are either lost or not yet available. But I did find another possible child:- Henry son of James and Mary Ann Barnes of Escalls baptized 4th November 1861 at Sennen So everything to this point was suggesting William Harvey married Elizabeth Ann Barnes but no marriage could be found. I decided to check FreeBMD again for any William Harvey marriages in the few years before 1883 and found the following which offered the first glimmer of hope:- September Qtr 1887 Vol 5c Page 387 Henry ELLIOTT William HARVEY Prudence RICHARDS One name is missing and it is that of the second bride!! So the next step was to use the FreeBMD index on Ancestry to search for a possible record for an Elziabeth Ann Barnes. BINGO!! - I found just the entry I was looking for! - Elizabeth Ann Barnes married Penzance R.D. September Qtr 1881 Vol 5c Page 387. The only possible difficulty was that the'8' in the Page number was a little worn. But after checking FreeBMD again I found this:- Marriages September 1881 BARNES Elizabeth Ann Penzance 5c 587 BUDD William Langport 5c 587 The entry in FreeBMD has been totally messed up which is why the marriage to William Harvey could not be found!!! (BTW - you lost me completely with the several posts that led to Ezekiel Rowe! ) CT

I missed this one with the mess when I lost all that work and had to repeat it. As per my last two posts I have identified the marriages for Mary Ann Barnes (the one you quote above) and also for Elizabeth Ann Barnes to William Harvey. The only thing missing now is to locate and identify William Harvey who seems to have been a little 'gun-shy' when it came to Census time! CT

I think that William was William Henry son of Henry and Mary as per my previous. And I have found him in all censuses up to 1911. Sorry about the red herring with the Ezekiel family. I didn't find the marriage you did, well done!

I did not expect my post to create much, if any interest! Done sleeping & working, I'm back and surprised to see how much has gone on here. Mainly from census records and using BMD, I was looking for information about Eliza Jane Trewhella and trying to distinguish between 2 Beatrice Harveys & husbands William Davey as well as 1 or 2 Elizabeth Ann (Rowe) Barnes' who married a Harvey and/or a Strick. Subsequently, it looks to me as though Elizabeth Ann/e's parents were cousins via their mothers Priscilla/Ursula and Ann? At St. Just, in 1851, I find James Barnes c/o grandparents William and Elizabeth Nicholas, and, after his death, widow Mary Ann (nee Rowe)and children resided with HER (i.e.,the same) grandparents in 1871.
I enjoy finding family members (like William Harvey's daughters Beatrice and Eva Jane Harvey) in related family households.
Based on OPC burial record transcriptions, I have been looking into the Harvey family at St. Buryan as the possible family of my ancestor, Martin Harvey, who was "of St Hilary" when he married. This is new territory for me. While it doesn't match other suggestions here, I have been considering the William Harvey who married Elizabeth Ann Barnes as possibly having been the son of Christiana Oliver (widow Rowe) and second husband, Richard Harvey. There's that Rowe name, again. Zib

Mainly from census records and using BMD, I was looking for information about Eliza Jane Trewhella Zib Well, if you do find her in the 1911 census, or anywhere else for that matter, please let me know! I've been eying an entry on the death register for Eliza J Coles at Gloucestershire in 1933, age 65. The age fits, and the location is not too far from Somerset, her last known place of abode. The finger on the "buy a certificate" button is twitching but I've put myself into the compulsory "cooling off" period for a few more days! Anyway, kicking the tyres, does bring out some more connections to our families! My next "person of interest" is Christopher Trewhella, Eliza Jane's uncle.

Simon - I would not rush into buying that particular death certificate just yet. I think you will find there are several possibilities as follows:- December Qtr 1933 - Gloucester R.D. Vol 6a Page 359 - age 65 (born about 1868) (the one you are considering) December Qtr 1949 - Anglesey W R.D. Vol 8a Page 23 - age 82 (born about 1867 September Qtr 1952 - Cardiff R.D. Vol 8b Page 80 - age 84 (born about 1868) Given Eliza was in Somerset in 1903 the first one does seem the most likely but there are a lot of years between the divorce proceedings and any of these deaths. I would still like to find Eliza in 1911 but after another attempt she still eludes me. Hmmm - so long as Eliza remained in England I think I might be able to ease the pain of that hovering finger! I just checked the 1911 Wales Census with the following results:- At Cardiff there is an Eliza Jane Coles age 43 with husband Alfred John Coles. Eliza was born at Cardiff and her age equates to a birth about 1867 or 1868. At Llanddaniel Fab, Caernarvonshire, there is an Eliza Jane Coles age 43. She is single and living with her brother Charles Mellior Coles and his family. She was born at Llangadwaladr, Anglesey and her age also equates to a birth about 1867 or 1868. I think these to might just about take care of the two Welsh possibilities I provided above. That being the case I reckon you can put your finger out of its misery any time your wallet allows! CT

Sorry Londoner, I am afraid I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. My first concern is that at the baptisms of every one of his children William Harvey was a miner whilst William Henry Harvey is consistently a farm labourer. But after thinking about that I found a much better reason for disagreeing:- William Henry Harvey of full age, bachelor, farm labourer of Treryn, son of Henry Harvey (deceased) married Sarah Skewes of full age, spinster, of Treryn, daughter of James Skewes, farm labourer, 17th January 1877 at St Levan Sarah appears to have been born at Perranuthnoe/Goldsithney about 1853/4 and it appears there were no children to the marriage. In 1891 Sarah is at St Just along with sister Annie Skewes, sister Mary J Skewes and nephew William Skewes. I should point out that Sarah states she is widowed but I suspect it might be a case of the husband doing a runner! Back in 1881 Sarah was working as a servant back at Perranuthnoe but says she is married. I think that tends to support my statement above. Bottom line is that we still cannot identify William Harvey. CT

I bow to your superior sleuthing. I was distracted by visitors and should have paid more attention to the Sarah Skewes marriage.

I don't know about 'superior sleuthing' it was more that I had a couple of things that didn't look quite right so I just continued 'gnawing' away at the bone until I was satisfied.

The Eliza Jane Coles who dies 1933 in Gloucester is probably not our girl. I obtained the DC. Dies 9 Dec 1933 County Mental Hospital, Barnwood, Gloucester. Recorded as "Wife of William Coles of no occupation" The informant was the medical superintendant.
So Janie's fate remains unknown so far.

Simon - before discounting that one out of hand it might be worth investigating further to try and find out exactly who this was. Remember that the location and age are consistent with the possibility it could have been our girl. The key thing is that the information for the Death Certificate was supplied by the Medical Superintendent and we don't know where he got those details. Who committed Eliza to this Hospital? Was it a relative who may have known the information? or was it the authorities who may not have known? Might be worth checking for possible marriages of a William Coles to Eliza Jane 'unknown' and see what turns up. Best to try and cover all bases and see if enough information can be found to eliminate this one for certain. CT
