Cathrine was a Trewhella by marriage, and was a widow when she gave birth to Simon Tregunna Trewhella. Her maiden name was Brown

No, the record as it appears in the Kenwyn Parish Register is 'Simon Tregunna Base son of Catherine Trewhela'
Simon was the illegitimate son of Catherine Trewhela (nee Brown) who by 1806 was a widow.
James Trewhelar and Catherine Brown were married at Kenwyn 10th July 1794 with Samuel Brown and James Hicks as witnesses. There were three children from this marriage:-
William Brown Trewelar bp. 31st July 1796 Kenwyn (nothing further known about him) Betsy Tremelling Trewhelar bp. 14th January 1798 Kenwyn (m. Ebenezer Davey 7th January 1822 Kenwyn) Mary Brown Trewheeler bp. 5th July 1801 St Gluvias (nothing further known)
James Trewhela died 22nd November 1804 and was buried at Kenwyn 25th November 1804 'from Penryn age 34'.
So Simon Tregunna Trewhela came along after this.
I believe Catherine was buried at St Gluvias 9th February 1837 'of Budock age 66'

Hello CT, I can't tell you how happy I was to come across this website/message board. I have been working on my Truan family history for many many years, but recently quite intensely to attempt to break through my Truan brickwall. I am referencing your "mysterious George Treweler of St Agnes who used Truran as a second forename". This is my George Truan, 3x Great Grandfather. I have been using atDNA to build a Truan research tree, which has led me to link together 100's of Cornish and Truan ancestors, but until now had not made the clear link between my George Truan b. abt 1826 St Agnes (married to Elizabeth Ely) and his Trewella roots. I have traced my George Truan to 1841 Splatts Farm St Agnes - 1851 Banns Vale - 1856 (b Richard Henry Truan my 2x Great Grandfather - Liskeard) and then onto Canada, George Truen of Orangeville, Ont, and Harold Truen of Toronto. I discovered the Trewella link through the reoccurabce of this as a middle name in his first son Richard George Trewhella Truan b. Mt Ock (Hawke) as listed in the 1861 census in Liskeard. I also connected my George through his wife Eliz Ely, daughter of Richard Ely and Jane Rickards, of Trenithick (1841). I have atDNA matched Samuel and Jane's descendants, including Emmets, but could not figure out how the surname Treweller (1841 + marriage cert) was used for George, and so, found this post on the Trewhella surname and descendants. Hope this all makes sense? You can find my Truan research tree here; www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/176790763/recentElizabeth Truan (nee Ely) remarried Josiah Trevarthen and had one son son with him Josiah Trevarthen Truan, who later drops the surname Truan for Trevarthen. Richard George Trewella Truan and his descendants remained in Cornwall and Devon, whereas Richard Henry Truan married Agnes Berryman and emigrated to Ontario passing away in 1888. Agnes lived into ld age in Ontario. Their descendants continue very happily today. It would be very interesting to be able to connect your mysterious George Treweller and my George, and what I reckon is their family history! best - Mike

Hi Mike and Welcome to the site. It took me a while to read and re-read your post but I think I have finally got things sorted. Part of the confusion was the way this family was represented in the Census and in BMD records with the surname being alternated as Trewella (Treweller) and Truan/Truran and the two sons of interest (Richard and George) both being referred to as 'Richard George' at various times! One thing that I did find was that, largely because of this, I had the wrong son married to Rhoda Tucker. It was actually Richard George Trewella Truan who married Rhoda at Braddock/Broadoak in 1874. But that side of things is now corrected in my database and I have the youngest son Richard married to Agnes Berryman who, by the way, had an illegitimate son (William Charles Berryman) born in 1867 at St Ives. I have not added any children for Richard and Agnes as yet and will probably leave that task for a couple of days given I am in the middle of some other confusing research at the moment. One thing that does puzzle me is that you show the wife of Richard Ely as JANE RICKARDS. I would be interested to learn just where exactly you got that information. The reason I bring that up is because the marriage record in the St Endellion Parish Register dated 27th March 1819 clearly shows that Richard Ely of St Minver married Jane FUNKING a sojourner in St Endellion. (I suspect that surname is more likely to be Hunking but it is clear enough in the register. It is unfortunate that Jane was unable to sign her own name.) Finally, at least for this note, it appears you are looking for the origins of George Trewella/Trewheler/Treweller. It took me many years but I eventually worked out who he was in 2019. The baptism record in the Kenwyn Parish Register:- 1821 - 18th March George son of Samuel and Jenifer Truen of Kenwyn, labourer George's parents were Samuel Truran and Jennifer Tregunna nee Trewhela who married at Kenwyn 15th June 1810 Samuel Truran was baptised at Kenwyn 5th March 1763 to Samuel Truran and Mary (nee Pearce) who married at Kenwyn in 1858 with the elder Samuel also being son of another Samuel. Jennifer Trewhela was baptised at Kenwyn 30th Mary 1784 to William Trewhela (var. Trewheller, Trewheelar etc.) and his third wife Catherine Truscott. She was first married to Peter Tregunna at Kenwyn 5th February 1803. Peter Tregunna was buried at Kenwyn in 1808 leaving three children. You also mentioned the Emmett family - George Trewella/Truan had six known siblings - Thomas, Fanny, Jane, Maria, Loveday and Richard. It was Jane who became the second wife of James Emmett at St Anthony in Roseland 5th January 1839. CT
