to Lannanta and all our other Kiwi members: Congratulations on the rebuild Just seen pictures of the new cardboard cathedral - it looks great even if it is not designed to last hundreds of years like our gothic edifices in England.

Hello Londoner It has been an interesting ride since the earthquake for the Cathedral.. initially immediately following the earthquake it was thought that there were up to 50 people under the rubble and relief to find that no one was there once the rescue teams had been in. There was divided opinion in the city regarding the saving of the old Cathedral from demolition..... I stand to be corrected but the majority of the residents wanting the unsafe buildings to be removed, including the Cathedral. So the inevitable court battle followed driven by those who wanted the existing structure restored... which was finally put to bed this month with a ruling that the Church was free to demolish the old structure. I am a Christchurch boy and I personally am very happy to see the structure being carried away in the back of trucks well remembering what would have been had there been 50 or so bodies buried in the rubble.... but I do always accept the views of other residents.
Our family house on St Andrews Hill in Christchurch still stands there exactly as it was post earthquake.... windows blown out and some walls cracked and broken..... all the furnishings, piano, food and all is still exactly as it was. The houses around it are gone and are starting to be replaced. The years are going by and for some normality has returned while for others there is still so much to be done.

I had no sooner posted than saw today's news that you guys had another 'quake. Near Blenheim. The magnitude-6.6 shake (earlier reported as mag-6.2), which hit at 2.31pm, was just 8 kilometres deep and was felt strongly in Wellington and as far away as Christchurch and Auckland.

Hello Lannanta, Thank you for your informative post re the cathedral. I was in Christchurch in April, staying in Charteris Bay, and coming into town daily. I was very curious as to why nothing was happening with the old cathedral and you have resolved that. I understand a lot of work is very slow to happen due to insurance disputes and the amount of damage to underground utilities. Loved container city, but I wonder if they will keep it when the city is restored.
