I am looking for a Jane Glasson (born about 1799) married in Whitstone in 1821 to John Short. There are absolutely no Glasson families in northeast Cornwall, so I am trying to find where she came from. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Anthony Arthur, who lived in Whitstone at the time but was from Crowan. I see that there are a lot of Glassons in the Crowan area, but there is no record for Jane's birth at the right time anywhere. Help?
Many thanks!

Welcome to the site Shorty. I don't know about this one but I will have a look and see what I might be able to find. I have already located the marriage record in my collection and see that the other witness was a Henry Paynter, another manwho might have origins in the West of Cornwall. Will do some work on it and post a reply as soon as I have something to report. And perhaps Lannanta might have some input as well and he may be able to answer the question directly from his database. CT

Well - I am afraid I am out of ideas after searching for a couple of hours and finding nothing significant. The only thing I can find that MIGHT be connected is the following baptism:- John son of John (farmer) and Jane Short of Barah baptised 9th July 1826 at Jacobstow I can find no other possible children, nothing in the 1841 or 1851 Census and no burials or marriages that I could say with any confidence might closely resemble John or Jane. There are a number of Jane/Jennifer Glassons who might potentially be the bride but then we also have no information from the marriage record to indicate whether Jane (or John for that matter) was single or widowed. And given the baptism above may or may not belong there is every possibility that Jane might have been an elderly spinster by 1821. However, after checking the possibilities of other marriages for a John Short to someone named Jane it does look like that child may well belong. In that case I would say that Jane Glasson was born no earlier than about 1778 and no later than about 1805. So if you check all possible Jane/Jenifer/Jennifer/Jenny Glassons born during that period (1778-1805) it might hopefully narrow down your list. From there you should be able to elminate at least some of them which might give you a chance of identifying Jane. All dependent upon whether she was a spinster or a widow when she married John Short! CT

Hello CT- Thanks very much for your research! I should have given more details about the Short part of the family: I am convinced that the son John born in Jacobstow is the son of Jane and John Short- he is my ancestor- and the three of them immigrated to the US in 1837/38. The approximate DOB that I have for Jane is from her headstone in Ohio, which would be 1798/99. Other than that, and another mention of her pre-Short-marriage name in a biography of her son John, I don't have any more information on her. I agree that it is possible that this was her second marriage, and that her approximate year of birth could be way off. But if it isn't, she would have been about 22 at this marriage. My question for more experienced Cornwall/Glasson researchers is: what would have brought a young woman so far away from her home? Was Anthony Arthur a cousin from Crowan? There is a mid-1700's marriage between a Glasson and an Arthur (detailed in other posts) in Crowan. Suggestions?

I have found the Cemetery details in Findagrave so have now seen photos of the headstone you mentioned but unfortunately it has not led me to anything else useful. I have also checked the US Census and so far have not been able to find any of the family in1860 or 1850. In fact the nearest I could find in 1860 was a Jane Short in Illinois but she was then age 70. You mentioned that the family went to the US about 1837 or 1838 - have you tried to find them in any passenger lists? CT

Hi CT
I have not been able to find any info on the family's passage to the US. The records are incomplete and not easily searched. I do have naturalization records for the men, but they do not give origins other than "England" which was pretty typical. The women became citizens through their husbands at that time.
On another note, I will be in Cornwall in June, and have booked an appointment at the CRO. Any suggestions for a research strategy there? Are there any published Glasson genealogies?
Thanks Again!

I know what those passenger records can be like but I was hoping that you might have already found something. CRO - best thing is to try and have an idea of what you want to look at before you get there. If you can think of some specifics you should be able to send a request in advance so that the items will be ready for you when you arrive. So think about what you want and prioritise the items and then send the priority list. After that have a flexible list of what else you might want and take it with you. No matter what order you have on your list it is very likely it will change as you progress. The only publication I know of is about one of the Glasson families in Australia but I have never seen it. As far as I know Lannanta has seen it or may even have a copy but not sure about that.

Hello!
After many years of working on other family lines, I am back looking for Jane Glasson. My original posts are under the username Shorty.
SO, I am posting a query hear again because I have determined that my Jane Glasson SHORT, who married John SHORT in Whitstone, 1821 and immigrated to Ohio, USA around 1838, died in January 1860, NOT 1868, at age 69. I received better photos of her headstone from which the date comes, and she is absent from the June 1860 federal census (whereas her husband and daughter's family are still on the farmstead).
That puts her approximate date of birth at 1791. Please see older posts in this thread for the details.
CT and Lannata have been extremely helpful in coming up with possibilities for the family of origin of my Jane, and I have revisited them recently:
Of the 12 possible Jane/Jenefer/Jennifer/Jenny GLASSON/GLAZON/GLASONs identified from Cornwall OPC database and familysearch, 3 possibly 4 cannot be traced forward to a marriage or childhood burial, and all are from southwest Cornwall families. I will detail them here:
1) 1789, 2 June - Gulval -Jennifer GLASSON. Father: Joseph; mother: [Mary (GLASSON), from 1777 marriage record in Gulval]
2) 1792, 6 April - Camborne - Jenefer GLASSON. Father: John; Mother: [Ann (MICHELL), from 1789 marriage record in Camborne]
3) 1793, 7 April - Paul - Jane GLASSON. Father: John, mother: Constance
4) 1801 - Gwinear - Jennifer Oats GLASSON. father: Stephen, mother: Mary
Family #2 is interesting because Jane & John SHORT's eldest child is named Anne, and it would have held significance not just because this woman's mother was named Ann, but also because an older sister Ann had died in childhood. However, Ann Sr. died in Camborne in 1810, and I suspect that John remarried and settled in Gwithian in 1811. I can find a spate of marriages of John & Ann's children in Gwinear, possibly including this Jennifer (as Jane) marrying a John MICHELL in 1822, so she may be out of the running.
Family #3's Jane had previously been assigned as the Jane who married William Edye at Stoke Damerel in Devon, 12th May 1812, but later information confirms that it was Jane Cornish GLASSON (b. ~1785), daughter of George & Sarah of Paul, who married this fella.
SO, my question for this group is, does anyone recognize these 4 Janes?

Welcome Back! I think now that there might be a fairly good chance that your Jane has been identified! In 1822 at Gwinear the bride of John Michell was actually Jennifer Oats Glasson which makes sense as she was baptised at Gwinear in 1801. I did a lot more work on the Glasson families a year or so back and although I still do not know what happened to all of the Jane/Jenifer/Jennifer Glassons (var.) I have managed to identify what happened to the great majority of them - particularly those born/baptised in the 1790s. Based on all that work and with the help of your updated information I can come to but one conclusion ................. Your Jane Glasson must almost certainly be:- Jenefer daughter of John and Ann (nee Michell) Glasson baptised at Camborne 6th April 1792 She is the ONLY Jane/Jennifer/Jenifer Glasson (var.) from the 1790s that I have not previously managed to find a marriage or burial for. And she is the one who is now being updated in my own database as the wife of John Short. CT

WOW!!!! This makes my day! Fantastic how collaborating with others can make such a difference. I think I've had the Jane Glasson/John Short marriage record for 20 years......
May I ask how you connected Jennifer Oats Glasson to the 1822 Gwinear marriage? I only looked at the usual sources and couldn't find more information for her, and I'm always looking for more sources for Cornwall.
Also, I'd love to be able to document eliminating the other 2 Jane/Jenefers from my list. If you could share their stories, it would be much appreciated!
The next mystery is: why/how did she end up in Whitstone?
Many Thanks!

Actually it was not a difficult problem to solve so long as there was access to the appropriate records - either images of original Gwinear records or transcripts of the same along with the Census. So:- 1. the marriage took place at Gwinear where there was a Glasson family with a daughter Jane/Jenifer 2. the 1851 Census shows that 'Jane' Michell had been born at Gwinear and was age 50 giving an approximate birth year of 1800 or 1801. 3. Jenifer Oats Glasson was baptised at Gwinear in 1801 so the marriage would have been in her home Parish. 4. 'the bonus'! - the second child of John and Jane Michell was named 'Stephen Glasson Michell' and Jennifer Oats Glasson's father was Stephen Glasson. Of course it was also helpful to understand that Jane and Jenifer/Jennifer were commonly interchangeable which, by your recent posts, you obviously know. The difficult part is finding the family in the Census so as to be able to get an idea of Jane's age. With so many name combinations to deal with (Jane/Jenifer/Jennifer/Jennyfair/Genipher et al) (Michell, Mitchell, Mitchel, Michel etc.) and the possibility they may have ventured away from Gwinear it does become challenging. And there was always the possibility Jane had died or been widowed and remarried before 1841. Had that been the case we might still be searching for her! The logical answer to that would be that she was 'in service' and employed by a family from the Whitstone area. But it may also be that John Short spent some time around Gwinear and she followed him when he returned to Whitstone. It is also possible we may never know the answer to that question. CT

Good afternoon
In the previous posts there is little to no discussion of daughter Anne who I understand married Mr Smeeth and is buried with her parents. From all appearances she was born before the 1821 marriage of her supposed parents?

Hello- Anne/Anna SHORT was born in Cornwall ~1820-1821 (US census records; Death record), and even though I cannot find her birth record in Cornwall, she is the sister of John Jr., and the daughter of John SHORT Sr. and Jane GLASSON: 1) She is buried in the same cemetery as John and Jane, and her husband, William SMEETH and their two daughters, who died young within a month of each other. J. Bancroft SHORT, the great grandson of John Sr. and Jane through their son John, is also buried in the cemetery, and had married a SMEETH woman. 2) Anne's first daughter’s middle name is Jane 3) She and her husband inherited the farm in Butler Township from John Sr. and Jane. John Sr. is living there with them in June 1860. 4) Anne's father-in-law (William SMEETH) became a US citizen on the same day and in the same court as her father John SHORT. 5) Her daughter Elizabeth Jane’s death certificate has her mother born in Cornwall, England, and surname as “SHOET”

Hello CT-
I have been trying to distinguish the parents of John GLASSON, who married Anne MICHELL 4 July 1789 at Camborne, and I am intrigued by your GLASSON database mentioned above. Their children were: Anne b. 1790, d. 1795 Jenefer (Jane) b. 1791-92 John b. 1794 Robert b. 1796 Anne b. 1799 Elizabeth b. 1801 Grace b. 1804 d. 1805
A search of the OPC parish records 1750-1765 has 6 baptised in the area, all in Crowan, Gwinear, or Camborne:
Date of baptism Age at marriage Parish of baptism Father’s name Mother’s name Other 1752, 19 May 37 Crowan Robert GLAZON Susannah 1757, 29 Dec 31 Crowan John GLAZEN Ann (poss. Ann WALTERS 1751 or Anne HAMPTON 1756 1758, 22 Jan 31 Gwinear John Mary (RICHARDS) m. at St. Keverne 1752, otp 1759, 12 Aug 29 Camborne Charles (Elizabeth UREN) m. 1757 in Camborne Same day & place as John below 1759, 12 Aug 29 Camborne John Ann WALTERS 1751 or Anne HAMPTON 1765, 5 April 23 Gwinear Robert Jane HAMPTON
A fella with an extensive Glassons database has the third John Glasson, son of John and Mary RICHARDS, bapt. at Gwinear, possibly married to Anne Michell. (http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~peterscornishfamily/genealogy/Carrivick/The%20Glasson%20Family/Glasson%20family.htm)
However, the last entry seems to fit naming patterns, as the names Robert and Jane both appear in the children, and our John Glasson was a sojourner in Camborne in 1789.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks!

Your John Glasson was indeed the last in the list and son of Robert Glasson and Jane Hampton.
The John Glasson who married Mary Richards at St Keverne in 1752 was baptised at Camborne 10th July 1726 son of Robert Glasson and Margery Werin. He left a Will in 1812 naming daughter Mary wife of Matthew Tellam as his Executrix.
