I am sure that we have discussed alias names on this board before ....... blowed if I can find where!!
But whilst working on the Hollow family at Paul I found an example of an alias being used in a way I had not come across before!
The short story begins with the first marriage of Anthony Holla in 1776:-
Anthony HOLLA, fisherman, married Mary MACLYN als MEDLEN, widow, 26th May 1776 at Paul by Banns
Prior to entering the details into my database I wanted to find out a little more about Mary and that alias. I do that normally but it is much more complicated to get things right when alias names are involved.
I found two items of interest initially but neither explained the alias:-
1. a baptism at Paul
Ishmael son of Mary, wife of Emanuel Maclyn, reputed a bastard child was baptised 11th March 1767
2. Mary's first marriage
Emanuel MACLYN, seaman belonging to the Speedwell sloop of war and native of the Western Islands married Mary HARRY, spinster, 30th June 1762 at Paul by Banns
I am confident this is the same woman who married Anthony Holla because of the peculiar scribble she used as mark in the register for both marriages.
What tied this all together was the burial record for her illegitimate son Ishmael:-
Ishmael MEDLING of Newlyn age 61 was buried 16th September 1828 at Paul
So the alias in this case (Mary Maclyn als Medlen) would appear to be a reference to the name of the father of Mary's illegitimate son!
That information might prove useful in other cases of illegitimacy.
