Looking for information on parents of John Gilbart, born 1760 Phillack, married in 1798 to Elizabeth Huthnance born 1774 Gwinear. They may be James Gilbart and Catherine Pearce married 1752? Any confirmation?
Other hints (unconfirmed) - an older family tree draft suggests John's siblings were Joshua, William and Francis, all born Phillack.
Thank you!

Thanks so much, Londoner! In the same family tree draft I mentioned, Francis Gilbart, brother of John, Son of James, is given as father of James William Gilbart (1794-1863) the well-known banker. It states Francis was from Hayle and James William was born in London. Wife/Mother unknown. Any information would be appreciated. PG

I agree with the information supplied by Londoner but unfortunately can find nothing to suggest one way or another whether your details about James William Gilbart might be right. A Google search for JWG brings up several references that all give a birthdate but not one gives any clues to the parents. I can find no baptism for him in FamilySearch or in the London BMBs available via Ancestry. In 1851 Jas W Gilbart age 57, unmarried, Banker, born London was at the Bedford Hotel in Brighton, Sussex. That's about all I can find right now. CT

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has James William b 31 Mar 1794 died 1863 ( 8 Aug from Probate Calendar at Anc) "descended from a Cornish Family" the detail is taken from the biographical prologue to JW's own book. no family clues in the execs of his will as they were two fellow bankers and an Irish Rev Joseph Denham Smith. Like CT I can find no birth/bap for JW or a marriage for Francis in London
Did Find JWG visiting Penzance in 1861 - lodging with an Eliza Bennetts

Just found a tree at Rootsweb which may provide the link - in that Joseph Denham Smith ( see above) was married to an alleged cousin of JW: 1 James Gilbart 2 Francis Gilbart 3 Thomas Gilbart , Rev b: 1797 d: 1825 + Martha Figgis b: 1800 4 Sarah Figgis Gilbart b: 19 DEC 1822 d: 17 FEB 1909 + Joseph Denham Smith b: 11 JUL 1817 d: 5 MAR 1889 5 James William Denham Smith b: 1853 d: 1927 + Isabel Grace Vandeleur b: 1873 d: 1933 6 Vivian Vandeleur Gilbart Denham d: 1940 + Diana Mary Beaumont b: 19 JUL 1907 d: Deceased 6 Ronald Alexander Stewart Denham b: 1903 d: 1982 + Bernice Tunmer 5 Martha Figgis Smith b: 1 FEB 1845 d: 8 MAR 1924 5 Thomas Gilbart-Smith , FRCP b: 9 JAN 1848 d: 3 JAN 1904 + Anna Bewley b: 15 FEB 1845 d: 27 NOV 1927 6 Mervyn Gilbart-Smith , BA JP b: 23 OCT 1870 d: 29 JUN 1930 + Anna Maria Humphrys 6 Olga Mary Gilbart-Smith b: 6 FEB 1872 d: 19 DEC 1901 6 Thomas Bewley Gilbart-Smith , Doctor b: 21 APR 1875 d: 3 FEB 1955 + Elizabeth Girder Eddison b: 13 JUL 1877 d: 10 JUL 1965 6 Claud Denham Gilbart-Smith b: 13 AUG 1881 d: 21 JUL 1947 + Elena Victoria Brooking b: 20 JUL 1885 d: AUG 1960 5 Eliza Denham Smith b: 1850 d: 1926 + Johnston Gilden 3 James William Gilbart , FRS
I haven't checked any of this but it might be worth while - although the marriage of Joseph & Sarah was 21 Dec 1841 in Dublin and in the newspaper report of JWG's Will Sarah is mentioned as his niece.

Following on from Londoner's information I think you might find this useful:- billiongraves.com/pages/record/SarahFiggisGilbartSmith/595081I have still not found a baptism for James William Gilbart but given his birth of 1794 I think the following marriage might be worthwhile investigating further:- Christ Church, Southwark by Licence 3rd February 1793 Francis Gilbart of Christ Church, Southwark Jane Dorothy Newman of Saint George, Southwark Witnesses - Thomas Newman, Martha Newman It may not be easy to prove whether or not this is Francis Gilbart from St Erth and until a baptism is found it cannot be certain he was the father of James William Gilbart - but it is a start!
