I've gotten a little curious about the links between various Cornish men and women who sailed to Canterbury, New Zealand, on the Hereford in 1877 (arriving in NZ in 1878). For me, it starts with the story of my great grandfather Christopher Osborne Quick, and his mate Simon Mitchell. Also on the boat was William Henry James (not sure of his precise origins) and his wife Honor Ann (nee Trewhella) whow as also from the Towednack area. I know these people are connected to each other because about ten years later, Honor Ann's sister Emma Jane arrived in Canterbury (via Australia) and Emma Jane married Simon Mitchell first, and then after his death, she married Christopher Osborne Quick.
Given the mention of a Cornish community in Christchurch (about where the current airport is) in family lore, I got to wondering what other connections there might be. After some playing around, I realised that the connections might not be so much based around a certain location in New Zealand long term, but around a common origin in a very particular part of Cornwall.
I've started looking at the passenger lists for the Hereford page by page, and one name/family stood out as familiar from my reading on this forum:
George Berriman 31 of Cornwall
Christina Berriman 27
John N Berriman 1
Geo H Berriman 11 months
A possible match for them in New Zealand is in the 1905-6 electoral roll where George Berryman is a miner and Christina Berryman married, both of Denniston on the West Coast of the South Island, NZ. I've not had any joy tracking these people down on the OPC so far.
Not on the Hereford, but on my list of suspects for interesting links is:
James and Mary Mitchell and their children (including a daughter Anne) who travelled to Canterbury on the Mary Shepherd in1873. A possible marriage for James and Mary is at the Isles of Scilly, banns 2 August 1863. If so, then Mary's previous name is Deason.
As I type, I'm also jumping back to check some more details and I'm only 11 pages through the passenger list for the Hereford and have more names (Manhire, Wroath, White, Bridgeman, Cowling and Hall), but it is the Mitchell and Berryman names which stand out for their familiarity in the West Penwith forum.
Any thoughts? Feel free to tell me I'm crazy to try and piece such possibilities together...
