I wonder if anyone knows anything about this Jane Trewhella? She was single, 28, and of Cornwall when she emigrated to Canterbury, New Zealand, leaving 2 Nov 1873 and arriving 2 Feb 1874.

I do! It took a bit of work a few years back but I eventually worked out who she was. Jane Fielding TREWHEELA baptised at Madron 18th December 1842 daughter of Thomas Henry and Grace (nee Cock) of Hea Moor She had disappeared from sight and over many years I tried unsuccessfully to find what had happened to her. I think I actually found her on the passenger list when I was in New Zealand but it was not until other records became available that I was able to solve the problem. The fact that the name 'Fielding' never appeared and also that her age was incorrect (she would really have been 30 in 1873) created uncertainties. The spelling of the surname was also a bit of a problem at first - until I realised that the name had been spelt at least four or five different ways in her family beforehand! Jane Trewheela married John Parkyn at Trinity Church, Lyttelton on December 6th 1874 She died of Chronic bronchitis and Emphysema followed by Cardiac failure on June 20th 1917 at 50 Parkes St., Woolston at the age of 74 and was buried at Linwood Cemetery on June 22nd. Information on the Death Certificate provided the additional details I needed to identify her. Her husband was still alive at the time of her death so he may have provided some of the information to the Undertaker. Although the name of her father was apparently not known her mother's name was recorded as Grace. It was also stated that she had been in New Zealand for 44 years which is not quite exactly correct as it would have been 43. But she did leave England in 1873 and died in 1917 so simple maths would make it 44. ;D Looks like I might have to try and identify John Parkyn now! I just noticed that he is also buried at Linwood Cemetery and I suspect he might also have been born in Cornwall. BTW - This particular Trewhella/Trewheela line can be traced back to a marriage at St Just in 1803 but so far, after more than 30 years of trying, I have not been able to progress any further. CT

Thanks NZJohn1 - that is certainly the John Parkyn and Jane was the 1917 burial you have listed.
To my knowledge there were no children to his marriage and unfortunately I don't quite have enough to go on in order to identify John Parkyn.
