I just love it when I sense something is not quite right ................. and then Prove It! ;D
(I will admit that I had a check of some of those Online Trees afterwards and found that one of them had part of the solution!)
William Herby/Kerby
Trevorrow born 1870
That name was really annoying me and whichever way I looked it confronted me. Andrew mentioned him as did every darned Tree on Ancestry and he even had the gall lto appear in the 1880 Census age 10!!!
Thomas Trevorrow and Elizabeth Jackson were married in 1872 so unless this errant and annoying child was their illegitimate son or a son of one from a previous marriage then the little blighter simply had no right to be there!
One way or another I was determined to find out just why he
was there so I put the head down (and the other end up ;D) and proceeded to dig ............. and dig .............. and dig!
Looking through those Ancestry Trees again and I kept seeing another thing that annoyed me .....
William Herby Trevorrow born 4th September 1870 Greenland, Ontonagon, MichiganI proceeded to check every Michigan Birth database on FamilySearch and Ancestry .... which in actual fact is only three ..... but there was no sign of this event.
I tried searching for events from 1870 to 1872 in Greenland, Ontonagon, Michigan and then tried the same dates for all of Ontonagon County and when that produced nothing I wanted I searched the same dates for all of Michigan.
Within those paramaters I had searched for William Trevorrow son of Thomas and Elizabeth and also tried using wildcards in the surname.
I also tried searching for William (no surname) son of Thomas and Elizabeth then William son of Thomas - again within the above paramaters.
Suffice to say I was getting just a little more annoyed!
Now, with FamilySearch you can only search by Year or by Start Year/End Year. The search facility in Ancestry however allows for the specification of an exact date - in this case 4th September 1870.
So .................. I proceeded to search Michigan births on Ancestry and started with full name details plus the exact date.
.................................... and then I started the whole FamilySerach excercise again.
No sign of William Herby/Kerby (or William H or William) Trevorrow son of Thomas and Elizabeth to be found anywhere!
But those of you who know me also know that I don't give up that easily!
From all of that searching I was left with but one possible clue.
The
only name that kept appearing that was anything at all like what I was after was
William Henry Roberts son of Thomas and Elizabeth Roberts born 4th September 1870
Rockland, Ontonagon, Michigan. Right date, wrong name and wrong darned Town!
And when I searched on Ancestry specifying 4th September 1870 - the
only name that appeared was
William Henry Roberts son of Thomas and Elizabeth at Rockland, Ontonagon, Michigan.
There was but one thing left to do and the result of that one thing was:-
August 3rd, 1869 - Greenland, Ontonagon, Michigan
Thomas Roberts age 24 married
Elizabeth Ann Jackson age 17So William Herby/Kerby Trevorrow was not a Trevorrow at all - he started life as William Henry Roberts!
I just love it when I sense something is not quite right ................. and then Prove It! ;D
But one Tree on Ancestry showed that Elizabeth Jackson had been previously married BUT there was just the name of Thomas Roberts with no date or place of the marriage!
And now I can happily update my database in the knowledge that it is going to be at lease close to being accurate!
