Andrew - I need to thank you for providing the trigger that I believe has led to the solution of the problem of Thomas Trevorrow!
Having seen this on at least two occasions it baffles me as to why I did not think of it in this instance. But then after some more searching last night I can say that I now know a little more than I did back then.
The answer is YES - I now believe that Thomas Trevorrow was the husband of both Mary Jane Chadford and of Elizabeth Jackson. It remains now for me to outline the scenario for you.
As Andrew has already pointed out there is a dearth of baptisms for Thomas Trevorrow during the period in which the husbands of Mary Jane Chadford and Elizabeth Jackson were supposed to have been born.
In fact, provided all have been recorded, there are just three in FreeBMD from July 1837 to December 1841 with two of those being March 1840 and March 1841.
I always imagined it would be more than a little difficult to fit two elephants into one Volkswagen
;D
Since yesterday I have found enough information to suggest that there is no record missing but instead we only need one elephant ................... and a BIG Volkswagon!
Thomas Trevorrow (born about 1803 St Ives) married Mary Uren (about 1806 Lelant) 15th December 1832 at St Ives.
They had nine children of whom two are of interest in this story:-
John bp. 17th January 1834 St Ives
Thomas bp. 4th January 1839 St Ives
John Trevorrow married Mary Trevorrow in the September Qtr of 1856 probably in a Methodist Chapel or the Registry Office. She was baptised at Lelant 16th March 1834 daughter of Thomas Trevorrow and Elizabeth (nee Williams).
In 1861 John and Mary were at Stennack, St Ives with two children - John age 4 and Mary age 6 months. I have found a probable baptism for John and now for two further children but nothing as yet for Mary.
John bp. 8th March 1857 St Ives
Thomas bp. 5th January 1862 St Ives Wesleyan Circuit (born 13th December 1861)
Henry bp. 14th December 1863 St Ives Wesleyan Circuit (born 16th October 1863)
By 1871 this family had disappeared from England.
On 31st July 1859 at Towednack Thomas Trevorrow, age 20, miner of Green Bank, son of Thomas Trevorrow, miner married Mary Jane Chadford of Green Bank, age 19, daughter of John Chadford
In 1861 they are also at Stennack, St Ives with daughter Mary J age 10 months. On the Census Schedule they are schedule 103 whilst brother John was schedule 141.
Until last night this was all I knew of Thomas and Mary Jane because they could not be found in 1871 and by 1881 Mary Jane claimed to be a widow. This was also a large part of the reason I believed he could not be the son of John and Mary (nee Uren).
But things have changed!
I will return to Mary Jane Chadford shortly but for now I will continue as though there were two different Thomas Trevorrows involved.
On 14th December 1872 Thomas Trevorrow married Elizabeth Jackson at Rockland, Ontonagon, Michigan. One of the witnesses was John Trevorrow of Algonquin who I considered probably a relative.
Later Census records placed the birth of Thomas as December 1839 and the fact he named a son Uren Trevorrow linked him as the son of John Trevorrow and Mary Uren.
From the marriage record I had then checked to see if I could find the witness, John Trevorrow of Algonquin:-
1870 US Census
Algonquin, Ontonagon, Michigan
John Trevorrow, 37, labourer, born England
Mary do., 35 born England
John W do., 13, born England
Thomas do., 8, born England
Mary do., 9, born England
Henry do., 6, born England
As you can see this is the same family as above and it certainly implies that John and Thomas Trevorrow were brothers.
I have not found him in 1870 or 1871 but Thomas and Elizabeth Trevorrow remained in Greenland, Ontonagon, Michigan from 1872 onwards.
1880 US Census
Greenland, Ontonagon, Michigan
Thomas Trevorrow, 37, miner
Elizabeth do., wife, 27
William K do., son, 10 <====
Thomas do., son, 5
John do., son, 2
Hannah do., daur, 2 mths (born April)
Son William is the mystery in this lot.
I mentioned in an earlier post that he may have been a child of Elizabeth but I now wonder if perhaps Thomas Trevorrow may have had another relationship.
(That is something else for me to pursue.)
There was also another daughter, Margaret Jane, born 1877 but died at 2 days.
The total children for Thomas and Elizabeth is yet to be determined with numbers as high as 13 having been mentioned. I will also follow up on that to see if I can gather an accurate list with as many details as possible.
And now to return to England and Mary Jane Chadford.
And is it any wonder you could not find them
- I managed to find them last night.
1871 Census
Breja, Towednack
Gool Mellows(?)
Mary CHADFORD, head, marr., 30, husband in America, born Towednack
Mary J TREVORROW, daur, 11, tin miner, St Ives
You won't find them (yet) looking under these names because, due to the appalling writing of the enumerator, the transcript shows something completely different!
In actual fact the names on this page as transcribed for the Index are:-
Ruben BERRYMAN
Mathew BERRYMAN
Elizabeth BERRYMAN
Mary ??ADGLEAD
Mary TOVROW
Honey PETERS
John PETERS
Edwards PETERS
The CORRECT names by my own translation are:-
Ruben BERRYMAN (hooray they got one correct!
)
Mathew BARAGWANATH
Elizabeth BARAGWANATH
Mathew BARAGWANATH
Mary ***** <====== see below
Mary TOVROW (looks just like this so will forgive the transcriber on this one!)
Honer PETERS
John PETERS
Edwards PETERS (yes, there does appear to be an 's' in there)
Berryman for Baragwanath!
- It looks absolutely nothing like Berryman!!
Mary ***** - This is the wife of Thomas Trevorrow even though it really is almost impossible to tell.
Looking at it closely I can see that the name was originally written as CHADFORD and an attempt has been made to correct it by overwriting another name. And there is just enough discernible to suggest that this name was TOVROW.
Undoubtedly this is Mary Jane Chadford and her daughter Mary Jane.
And now we come to the part that convinced me that Thomas Trevorrow had married twice without either wife apparently knowing it!
In the 1861 Census Thomas and Mary Jane were at St Ives with their first daughter Mary Jane for whom I had never been able to find a baptism.
Last night I decided to have a look at FreeBMD and stumbled on a couple of names that prompted me to take a look at the Towednack PR. What I found was:-
Elizabeth Uren daughter of Thomas and Mary Jane Trevorrow of Greenbank baptised 2nd December 1862 Towednack
Mary Jane daughter of Thomas and Mary Jane Trevorrow of Green Bank baptised 10th April 1864 Towednack
At first I had another dilemma because daughter Mary Jane was with her mother in 1871 age 11. Obviously the same daughter from the 1861 Census!
But then I started to think about Elizabeth Uren Trevorrow and wondered where she was in 1871. She was not with her mother which meant either she was with relatives or friends or, perhaps, had not survived.
There was no apparent sign of her in the Census so I decided to see what FreeBMD had to say:-
Deaths June 1864
Penzance R.D. Vol 5c Page 210
TREVORROW Elizabeth Uren
Unfortunately the records I have for Towednack Burials only commence at 1865 so I could not check the record for her age. But given the rarity of the name and the fact she is not in the 1871 Census indicates it must be the same girl. And that led me to another thought!
1. Elizabeth died in the June Qtr of 1864 so she would have been buried sometime during April, May or June.
2. As her mother and sister were at Towednack in 1871 it was likely there were there earlier.
3. Mary Jane Trevorrow was baptised at Towednack 10th April 1864 (June Qtr)
I would be almost willing to bet that Mary Jane was baptised on the same day her sister was buried!
The naming of daughter Elizabeth Uren was enough to finally provide the link so I am quite happy now that Thomas Trevorrow did the runner from one wife and married another!
Not sure that either of the wives would have been overly impressed though!
Now it would be nice to find the emigration records for Thomas and John and it would be interesting to see whether they went to America together or if perhaps Thomas followed John a little later.
And now for a break before trying to unravel the mystery of son William born about 1870!
