Hello all,
I am trying to identify the wife of James Burrell.
He was the Father of Elizabeth Burrell, who was baptised in St Ives on 24th Feb 1811, and her sister Sally who was baptised in St Ives on 25th April 1813. On the OPC info it gives their Mother's name as Elizabeth however I am thinking this may be an error as the only marriage I can find for James Burrell was on 5th Feb 1810 in St Ives to Margaret Pearce.
I am a little confused and hoping that it may be simply down to a transcriber error?
If anyone can shed some light on this I would be grateful as I am hitting the proverbial brick wall!
Many thanks, Cathy

The image on Family search is not from the original parish Register but a more recent transcription. We have found instances where the register has the child's name for one of the parents so it is possible that that has happened in this case.

Transcriber Error?!?!?!?! Surely not!! THAT WAS ME!! In actual fact I have transcribed from the original Parish Register for St Ives and although I have made a few mistakes in my transcriptions (mostly now corrected!) there were no mistakes made in this case. As Londoner has said there have been many instances where names have been incorrectly recorded in the registers and probably more often than not it is the child's name entered by mistake for one of the parents. I have seen it the other way around where the child's name has been incorrectly entered also. However, armed with the images in front of me right now I can safely say that in the case of both Elizabeth in 1811 and Sally in 1813 the mother's name is clearly recorded as Elizabeth. It is also worth noting that James Burrell is recorded as a 'mason' by occupation. On 8th September 1820 another daughter, Margaret Pearce Burrell, was baptised but this time the parents were recorded as James (a mason) and Margaret. Although most unusual to have the same error occur in separate records I do agree that it is more likely the 1810 marriage to Margaret Pearce that is responsible for all three of the above baptisms. Looking a little closer at entries now offers another interesting possibility for the error! Two consecutive entries in the Marriage Register:- William Burrell married Elizabeth Daniel 29th January 1810 James Burrell married Margaret Pearce 5th February 1810 Both couples were baptising children at St Ives during the same time period so I suspect that perhaps the Vicar may have been a little confused as to who was who, which husband married which wife and who was behind on the rent! ;D CT

An interesting addition. We already know that James and Margaret had two children baptised with the mother's name recorded as Elizabeth. Well, James Burrell had a brother named William who, as pointed out previously, married a week before James to Elizabeth Daniel. When the first three children of this marriage were baptised the mother's name was recorded as JANE! Go figure! CT

Oh blimey! Very very sorry to offend you CT, of all the people to offend I would least have liked it to be you - you have helped me out so often!! My humble apologies! I didn't realise you did the transcribing - what an interesting job!
So, am I right in thinking that we have decided that the Vicar was a bit confused and that my James Burrell married Margaret Pearce and had the 3 children we have mentioned, namely Elizabeth, Sally and the Margaret Pearce that you found?
Thanks for the help and sorry again for any offence inadvertently caused!
Cathy

No offence taken Cathy! And any transcriber who says he/she does not make mistakes is surely deceiving themselves! Yes, I believe that Elizabeth, Sally and Margaret were all children of James and Margaret (nee Pearce). I don't know how it came to be that Elizabeth was recorded as the mother when the first two children were baptised. But as I also pointed out James had a brother William who married Elizabeth Daniel and for the first THREE of their children the mother's name was recorded as JANE! CT
