Just wanted to say that if you have an Mariner and can't find a death, it's well worth taking a look at the Trinity House records to find out if the said Mariner/sailor's widow lodged a petition with Trinity House for monies. I ordered a copy of a petition lodged by my 5x great grandmother. A mine of information! Well worth the money

Where can we access those records - are there any indices online...?

The Origins Network has searchable lists. You can then order a copy of the relevant petition online, which is sent to you by SOG. Takes a few weeks to arrive but was well worth the wait in my case. ;D The copy of the Petition I received included: date, location and cause of death; names and birth dates of children; ships sailed on and location of voyages; etc. An extremely useful document!

Very good thinking 'me luvvly'! I wish I had thought of that as a few of the Trewhella clan were mariners. One, in particular, was Malachy for whom I have 'started' a new thread in the Trewhella section of this Forum. Don't have much on him as yet but will update what I do have in the next day or so. If no further information is forthcoming - well, so be it - but it is interesting anyway. Not sure how far back the Trinity House records might go but I am thinking the late 1700's or early 1800's 'might' be the limit but will try to see what I can find in my books here at home.
