The following was actually compiled for an email in an attempt to find ways to jog my brain into some sort of action to try and finally identify this William Trewhella.
I believe I know who he is but there is a 38-year void I need to fill before I can prove it.
In the end I decided to post the information here for you all to view and hopefully someone might come up with something to help.
I’ve just had a little more luck with another ‘problem child’ although I still have a long way to go with the bugger. I have had a couple of random records in the collection for a long time and recently had suspicions about them.
Today I was updating some information from the California Death Index and, as usual, got sidetracked and somehow ended up looking at this information again.
In 1881 a William H Trewhella married Margaret E Brothers in Vermilion Co., Illinois.
In 1893 a William Trewhella was buried at Neidlinger Cemetery, Clay Co., Indiana.
In 1893 a Henry Thomas married a Margaret H Trewhella in Clay Co., Indiana.
My recent suspicion was that this was all linked even though middle initials are different and that Margaret H Trewhella was the widow of William.
Now, my first problem is that William married AFTER the 1880 Census and died BEFORE the 1900 Census but there is also the problem of his apparent non-appearance in the 1880 Census as a single man.
I did find another William Trewhela in the 1880 Census tonight. He was age 35 and indexed as TEUSKELA but he was in Connecticut and I am almost certain he was the son of Martin and Sarah from Ludgvan. I also know a little more about him as he died in Connecticut in 1911.
I don’t want to bore you with this but for my own benefit I am going to expand on the little pieces of information above to see if it might trigger something in the old brain!
From the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index:-
William H TREWHELLA married Margaret E BROTHERS 7th May 1881 Vermilion County, Illinois (No sign of William in the 1880 Census)
From USGenWeb is a transcript for the Neidlinger Cemetery, Jackson Township, Clay County, Indiana. This Cemetery is located on land once belonging to the Neidlinger family but there are other people buried there amongst the 100 or so interments. Amongst these is:-
William Trewhella
died 11 Jan. 1893, age 49 years 11 months 26 days
Now, a calculation of birthdate using this information gives 16th January 1843 although it should be noted that the results all depend on how the original calculation was done for the tombstone. This link is a very good one:-
www.searchforancestors.com/utility/birthday.html
Of all my William Trewhellas of various spellings I have just one who could reasonably be expected to be this man:-
William Trewhella base son of Jane Trewhella born Water Street, Ystradganlais, Powys, Wales 20th August 1843 (Birth Certificate)
This is the ONLY William Trewhella (var.) in my database born between 1831 and 1880+ that I have been unable to account for in some way or another so he is the obvious choice. BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After 20th August 1843, his date of birth, I have absolutely zero in the way of records or sightings of this William. I have never been able to find him or his mother in any UK Census and I have just one possible record for his mother after that date:-
Marriages Mar 1844 (>99%)

For convenience I have removed the names of the other three brides. But I think you may be able to see the conundrum now facing me!
Many times over the last several years I have attempted to find Jane in the Census by searching on each of these names but every attempt has proved fruitless. I guess the only way to find out who she married is to buy the Marriage Certificate but I just can’t afford to do that. Of course, it would be really helpful if FamilySearch or Ancestry (or someone!!) would release the PR information for that time period and event!
Anyway, for the moment this William is only circumstantially the man who died in Indiana in 1893.
And now for the part that seems to tie at least some of this together!
William Trewhella died 11th January 1893 and was buried in a Cemetery in Jackson Township, Clay County, Indiana and that now brings me to item three which is the marriage of Henry Thomas.
Some new searching tonight using basically the same resources but a slightly different search criteria has presented me with some additional information on that marriage. In fact FamilySearch records give me four hits for the same event!
The record collection is – Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1859 and this time I searched for records of ‘Henry Thomas, marriage, wife=Margaret’.
For all four records produced the common factor is the date of marriage being 10th December 1893 – results are:-
1. Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1859 for Henry Thomas
Groom’s name Henry Thomas
Race white
Birthplace Newport, Wales
Residence Asherville, Indiana
Father James Thomas
Date of Marriage 10 Dec 1893
Film Number 1404545
2. Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1859 for Henry Thomas and Margaret H Trewheller
Groom Henry Thomas
Bride Margaret H Trewheller
Date of Licence 07 Dec 1893
County of Licence Clay
Date of Marriage 10 Dec 1893
Place of Marriage , Clay, Indiana
Film Number 1404539
3. Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1859 for Henry Thomas and Margaret Brothers
Groom Henry Thomas
Groom’s No. Marriage 2
Groom’s mother Jane Edmonson
Bride Margaret Brothers
Bride’s Race White
Bride’s Residence Asherville, Indiana
Date of Marriage 10 Dec 1893
Film Number 1404545
4. Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1859 for Henry Thomas and Brothers
Groom Henry Thomas
Bride Brothers
Bride’s Place of Birth Maryland
Bride’s No. Marriage 3
Bride’s Father James Brothers
Bride’s Mother Elizabeth Hall
Date of Marriage 10 Dec 1893
Place of Marriage Asherville, Indiana
Film Number 1404545
Combining all of this information now tells me that Margaret was the widow of William Trewhella when she married Henry Thomas at Asherville, Indiana. And what is very interesting is what Wikipedia has to say about Asherville:-
Asherville is an unincorporated town in Jackson Township, Clay County, Indiana.
And to quote from the Neidlinger Cemetery record:-
(Neidlinger Cemetery) It is located about ½ mile off
Harmony Road just south of I - 70, next to a coal mine. It is in Jackson
Township, Clay county, Indiana.
itouchmap.com/?d=439987&s=IN&f=cemetery
The above link should take you straight to a map showing the location of Neidlinger Cemetery (highlighted by the ‘stickman’ in the middle of the image). It is just south of the I70 and if you look to the North of that Highway you will see Asherville!
So I can prove that ‘a’ William Trewhella who died at Jackson Township, Indiana 11th January 1893 was born in England in 1843. This same William Trewhella married Margaret Brothers in Illinois in 1881 and 11 months after his death his widow married Henry Thomas in the same area.
It looks probable that William Trewhella must have been the illegitimate son of Jane Trewhella born at Ystradganlais, Powys 20th August 1843 but unfortunately I have no sightings of William (or his mother) between his date of birth and when he married in Illinois in 1881.
At least I am now a lot closer to solving this puzzle than I was a couple of hours ago!
