I have had an enquiry from someone in Australia who researches facts related to John Deeson and Richard Oates who discovered the largest gold nugget ever found, The Welcome Stranger.
The copy of a letter sent to me was authored by one James Oats. He had a few pieces of the Welcome Stranger. He wrote to a George Deeson telling him he was going to send a piece to him. The letter is 7 Dec 1964 and he says he is living in Newport, Wales and moved there 10 years before. Given his age he is possibly a grandson of Richard Oates.
Did anyone know the family and could give any idea of his relationship to Richard?

If you can come up with a few more details about these people then I might be able to help.
Any date-related information regarding the original Deeson and Oates would be a start as well as any possible information on wives and children.
From there I should be able to track the family through the BDM records (Indexes) that I have and provide a few more clues.
Anything extra you can send would be of use.

Therein lies the problem. I know the details of the Oats family up to the early 1900's. Richard had 2 sons who were born in Australia and there is no further info on them. The researcher has been primarily involved in Deeson research and came across the letters sent to George Deeson. George Wilfred Deeson born 1904 was an accomplished musician and lived for some years in Penzance before returning to Australia where he died in 1988. I was just wondering if anyone frequenting this forum had come across him or might be related. The remaining piece of the nugget has to be in someone's possession.
Richard had no direct family in Pendeen as he only had one brother who died aged 5 years. We do know that James lived in Pendeen as George mentions that he visited James at his home in Pendeen.

Any idea on what State and time-frame Richard's sons were born in Australia?
If it was Victoria I should be able to track down some more information for you.

Ok - here is a start.
The two boys were sons of Richard Oates and Jane Bluett Penrose. As you said, Richard died in Bendigo in 1955 at the age of 81.
James Penrose Oates died in Bendigo in 1961 aged 82.
Richard born Moliagul 1874 (Reg. 10797) s/o Richard Oates and Jane Blewett Penrose Sarah Elizabeth born Dunolly 1875 (Reg. 22388) d/o Richard Oates and Jane Penrose James Penrose born Dunolly 1879 (Reg. 2103) s/o Richard Oates and Jane Penrose Annie Jane born Dunolly 1880 (Reg. 8140) d/o Richard Oates and Jane Penrose
Possible Marriages:-
Sarah Elizabeth Oates (bn. Vic) m. James LANYON 1896 (Reg. 5301) Annie Jane Oates (bn. Dunolly) m. Donald Victor GOW 1911 (Reg. 7550) James Penrose Oates m. Kath Jane MILLER 1916 (Reg. 7579)
Richard Oates s/o Richard Oates and Elizabeth Barnett died at Marong in 1906 aged 79 (Reg. 13773)
Jane Blewett Oates d/o James PENROSE and Sarah BLEWETT died at Marong in 1921 aged 84 (Reg. 2396)
Annie Jane GOW d/o Richard Oates and Jane Penrose died at Inglewood in 1965 aged 85 (Reg. 24545)
Sarah Elizabeth LANYON d/o Richard Oates and Jane Penrose died at East St Kilda in 1951 aged 75 (Reg. 10188)
That seems to cover the family.
All I need do now is check for children for each of the marriages and then see how many of them married and had children.
Hope this helps for now.
Ian
