I am seeking information about John Wallis with the following background, all unverified;
- known as "Jackie", born Sancreed, Cornwall 1785, parents and siblings unknown,
-married Mary Stephens, born St Agnes, Cornwall 1792, at St Mewans, Cornwall 23.10.1819, parents and siblings unknown,
- at least one child, Jane Wallis, born St Austell, Cornwall c1830, died Ballarat, Australia12.1.1922, siblings unknown,
Please can anyone confirm this information, advise how I can obtain confirmation documentation, movements of the Family in Cornwall, and date and place of sailing for Jane to emigrate to Australia?
Thanks

Welcome to the site Ian. Londoner I think will be the best one to try and identify John Wallis but I have found a few other bits and pieces for you. According to the baptism records of four of their children Mary was the daughter of Francis and Jane/Jenifer Stephens. I have not yet checked any further than that but at least you have names for her parents. The surname varies but the four baptisms I have found so far were all Non-conformist:- John WALLACE baptised 10th September 1822 St Austell Wesleyan Methodist Circuit (born 19th August 1822 St Mewan) - residence St Mewan Christopher WALLACE baptised 22nd March 1824 St Austell Wesleyan Methodist Circuit (born 8th March 1824 St Ewe) - residence Polgooth, St Ewe Francis WALLIS baptised 5th February 1826 Commerce or Paramoor Chapel, St Ewe (Luxulyan Bible Christian Circuit)(born 16th January 1826 St Ewe) - residence St Ewe Solomon WALLISH baptised 17th September 1827 Commerce Chapel, St Ewe (Luxulyan BC Circuit) (born 4th August 1827 St Mewan) - residence St Mewan Solomon was married 26th December 1850 at St Cleer to Jane Mitchell (daughter of Benjamin) and both were resident at St Cleer. I have not found a baptism for Jane as yet but she was at home with her parents and brother John in the 1851 Census (soon before she was married) and her birthplace was recorded as St Mewan which is right by St Austell. Jane married William Hicks (son of Thomas) at St Cleer 21st April 1851. Best I can do for now as I have other things happening but at least that is a start. I am sure we can find out more and answer some of your other questions over the coming days. CT

The 1851 Census that CT found:
33,Common Moor, Jabez Wallace,Head,M,66,,Copper Miner,Sancreed Cornwall,, Mary Wallace,Wife,M,,59,,St Agnes Cornwall,, John Wallace,Son,U,28,,Copper Miner,St Mewan Cornwall,, Jane Wallace,Dau,U,,21,Copper Dresser,St Mewan Cornwall,,
I dont know who made the transcription the original clearly says Jakey
This is the family in 1841 at St Ewe: John Wallis 55 Mary Wallis 50 John Wallis 15 Christopher Wallis 15 Francis Wallis 15 Soloman Wallis 10 Jane Wallis 10
The nearest possible baptism at Sancreed for John is the son of John & Elizabeth in 1791 but I dont think this is the right chap. You are probably looking for a non-conformist family - as lots of my Wallis lot were. If you are near an LDS Family Centre you could look at the film of the marriage to Mary to see if there is any clue in the witnesses but in 1819 there won't be any parents names mentioned.
One possibility is the son of John Wallish and Jane Leggoe Roberts, baptised Jakeh at St Just 12 Sep 1784. I haven't previously been able to find what happened to him and he did have a brother Christopher. Its a long shot but the best I can offer at the moment.

Londoner - would think that is a lot better than a long shot! By my reckoning you have hit the nail smack bang in the middle of the head! ;D If you check the marriage in FamilySearch you will find that the name is recorded as JACKEY Wallis m. Mary Stephens and I must admit that I was more than a little curious as to why some named JOHN would be known as JACKEY. But the answer turns out to be fairly simply I think ..... it is because his name WAS actually JAKEH (Jackey). The only time I have found him so far recorded as JOHN is in the Victorian Death Index record for the death of his daughter Jane. Obviously Jane was a little past caring what her father's name was so someone else had to inform the authorities. And given that Jane was age 91 when she died it is little wonder that the name of her father might have been obscured by time! I believe you have now solved part of the query for Ian as well as solving your own problem of what became of Jakeh Wallish. And even though he was baptised at St Just it does not mean that he was born there. With St Just and Sancreed bordering each other it is very possible that he was actually born in Sancreed. I presume the marriage is 27th March 1780 at St Just between John Wallis and Jane Roberts? CT

yes, that is the marriage - Jane d/o Christopher Roberts and Jane Leggo bp 8 Aug 1747. John probably s/o John Wallish & Constance Grenfell bp 5 Apr 1751. BUT there were a lot of Johns around at that time - he is my choice because he had a brother Jakeh (1754)

Hi! I know this is an old thread, but I am hoping for some verification before I continue off on the wrong tangent. Apologies in advance, as this may be a convoluted message. My GG grandfather was John Wallis, born 1822, St Mewan, Cornwall. He married Elizabeth Esphin Anna Laity in St Cleer, on Jan 10 1852. I have John's parents as Jakeh (John) Wallis (born 1784 St Just in Penwith), and Mary Stephens (born 1792 St Agnes, Cornwall) - married Oct 23 1819 in St Mewan, Cornwall. This information links in nicely with the above information. So far, so good. HOWEVER ... some of my family members are convinced that Mary was a BENNET, and not a STEPHENS. Hence, I'm checking here. Additionally, some of the family trees on Ancestry.com have trees with the family group slightly different. For example, Jackey (born 1790) and Mary Stephens (born 1792) had the same children as listed above (John 1822, Christopher 1824, Francis 1826, Solomon 1828, Jane 1830) but have different information - eg their Jane did not emigrate to Australia. I am aware that the Wallis clan seemed to stick to the same (limited) familial names ... which makes this very difficult, from afar (Australia). My grandfather said that his family lived in Mousehole prior to sailing to Australia. Anyone up for a challenge, to clarify the information I have (same as Ian's above, and Cornish Terrier, and Londoner!)?? Thanks in advance, Wendy

Hi Wendy - I think I can now safely say that it is your information that is correct and not the others you have quoted. I have not been able to find a baptism for daughter Jane but she does appear in the 1851 Census with parents Jakeh and Mary just a few weeks before her marriage to William Hicks at St Cleer. In her marriage record she stated her father's name as JOHN Wallis and this is certainly confusing matters because there was a marriage at Falmouth in 1829 for a John Wallace and Mary Stevens. However I have just checked and it appears they had two children baptized at Falmouth with the first being son William in 1831. Jane Hicks died at Sebastapol, Victoria in 1922 at the age of 91 and in the death index her parents are again listed as John Wallis and Mary Stephens. I can find one son, William, born at Ballarat in 1855. The information about Jakeh's wife being a BENNET is absolutely incorrect!! Their first four children - John, Christopher, Francis and Solomon - were all baptized at either the St Austell Weleyan or Luxulyan Bible Christian Circuits and in each case the parents recorded in the baptismal registers are:- John - son of Jackey Wallace of the Parish of St Mewan and of Mary his wife who was the daughter of Francis and Jenifer Stephens (baptized probably at Polgooth Wesleyan Chapel in St Mewan) Christopher - son of Jackey Wallace of Polgoath in the Parish of St Ewe and of Mary his wife who was the daughter of Francis and Jane Stephens (baptized probably at Tucoyse Wesleyan Chapel in St Ewe) Francis - son of Jack Wallis of the Parish of St Ewe and of Mary his wife who was the daughter of Francis and Jane Stephens (baptized Commerce (Paramoor) Chapel, St Ewe - Luxulyan Bible Christian Circuit) Solomon - son of Jackey Wallish of the Parish of St Mewan labourer and of Mary his wife who was the daughter of Francis and Jane Stephens (baptized Commerce Chapel, St Ewe - Luxulyan Bible Christian Circuit) I hope that answers your questions. Hi Cornish Terrier: You are a GEM .... thank you for the clarifications .... I shall continue along the path I am pursuing ... I have a few more generations listed, but am waiting for confirmations that they were the correct branches! You realise, of course, I will probably be back with questions!!!! Thanks again. Wendy

Hello again! Now that I have confirmation of Jakeh/Jackey/John Wallis' wife being Mary STEPHENS (born 1792 St Agnes, Cornwall), I am trying to ascertain her parentage. I have Francis and Jenifer/Jane Stephens ... with no other detail (see CT's post above). However, I did find a Mary Stephens baptized (Aug 1792) in St Cleer, Cornwall to parents Thomas and Mary Stephens, as well as a Mary Stephens (baptized Oct 1792) to William Stephens and ? Wilmot - both in the Cornwall OPC database, and England Select Births and Christenings. There are a couple of Mary Stephens listed as being born/baptised in St Agnes, but not until 1793. Neither birth year (1792 or 1793) ties in with the 1841 census information (see Londoner's post above), but then again, the children's ages are rough guesstimates too! I hope someone can help out this frustrated researcher from the Antipodes! Thanks, in advance. Wendy

Wendy - the first thing you need to be aware of about the 1841 Census is that the ages of adults (persons age 15 and above) were not required to be accurate. The only requirement was that they be rounded down to the nearest five years. So if someone were age 45 their age in the Census could appears as age 40. The difficulty with this is that only an unknown percentage seemed to take advantage of this - many people gave their ages accurately, many rounded down but not always to the nearest five and others just didn't seem to know their true age or didn't care what information they gave.
Nevertheless, the Mary you are looking for was baptized at St Agnes in 1791:-
Mary daughter of Francis and Jenny Stephens baptized 23rd October 1791 (born 5th October 1791)
The entry can be found in the OPC database and on FamilySearch in the collection of Cornwall Parish Registers for which images can be viewed online. (St Agnes Baptisms, Burials, 1791-1812)
Francis STEPHENS and Jane STEPHENS were married at St Agnes 6th December 1789 with witnesses Thomas Stephens and Philip Roberts.

Thanks CT .... that is interesting re the ages listed for the census!
I appreciate the new information for Mary, Francis, and Jane/Jenny ...
I wonder ... should I be posting these questions on the query page, rather than here??
Your prompt assistance is wonderful, CT.
Regards, Wendy

Your questions are all related to the existing thread about John/Jakeh Wallis and his family so keep them here.
Should you want to discuss a different family it would be best to create a new thread. If a particular Parish is involved then check down towards the bottom of the home page to see if there is a forum for that Parish and post there. Of course, you should also check to see if there is a forum for the surname as well but that section is fairly limited. And if you are simply not quite sure where to post then opt for Queries and the thread can be moved later on if necessary.
