I am the great X 5 granddaughter of William Semmons of Crowan and Eleanor Reed. When William died in 1841, there was a mention in the West Briton Advertisor that he was survived by 6 children, 34 grand children and 49 great-grandchildren "in a direct line."
I have identified 3 children and suspect a fourth, which leaves me missing a few.
What is interesting about this family is that they repeatedly tend to name the first boy/girl after themselves as parents rather than after grandparents. So I am wondering if this is a quirk or due to the size of the family and too many repeated names or a trend in the location/area. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this??

Nothing really unusually about parents naming the first children after themselves rather than grandparents or vice versa. I don't know that there was any written law that said 'you must name ..... ' etc., etc. But traditionally I would expect to see the first son named after either the father himself or the paternal grandfather and similarly with the first daughter either after the mother or the paternal grandmother. But there are other factors I think that could influence matters and sometimes you may find a first child named after a recently deceased sibling of one of the parents. And then there is the case in the early part of my family where the first two children were named after the then current King and Queen! Now - missing children of William and Eleanor! Here is the list of those I have found with all details from the Crowan Parish Register except for Eleanor in 1786 whose details are froma transcript of the Sithney PR. Honour Symmons bp. 31st January 1779 Crowan William Symmons bp. 4th November 1781 Crowan (born 21st September) Eleanor Simmonds bp. 7th May 1786 Sithney John Symmons bp. 3rd August 1788 Crowan (born 30th June 1788) Henry Symmons bp. 8th January 1792 Crowan (born 27th November 1791) James Symmons bp. 3rd April 1796 Crowan (born 19th February 1796) Ann Symmons bp. 4th May 1800 Crowan (born 28th January 1800) It is possible that there may be one or two more but I have been unable to find any other then the above. Thanks, CT--
I didn't have the daughters! Since William died before the first census, I've had a challenge separating out the different families
I did wonder why I later found Eleanor residing in the home of an Honor Winn, and now I know.

No problem Zibetha. BTW - I meant to mention that all those baptisms can be found in FamilySearch as well. CT

I don't doubt it-- but almost every time I try to access Family Search I get the temporarily unavailable - try back later message and tend to give up. Some great information if and when you can get to it.
I know you have a thread going about that site!

Hmm - I presume you get the 'Please Try Later' message after viewing several images? If that is the case then there is a way that you can keep on going. It is a pain in the proverbial but ................. You could try to work out how many images you have looked at/saved before the message appears the first time and that will give you a rough idea (at least for that folder) of how far you will get each time. Once you have that worked out you need to be prepared to open another FamilySearch window. What I do is this:- I know that I will get that message after (for example) 20 images so sometime before I get to the 20th image I open another Window and navigate through FamilySearch to the folder I am viewing. A few images prior to expecting the 'Please Try Later' message to appear I will open that folder in the New Window and that will present me with Image 1 of the set. As soon as the 'Please Try Later' message appears in the first window I just go to the New Window, enter the next image number that I want to see and then continue on for another 20 images. Once you are going again be sure to close the first window or it may cause complications. The only problem is that the number of images you can view will change with each folder so you need to do the calculations each time by viewing images up until it stops. It works for me so hopefully it will work for you. CT

If you are using Internet Explorer then F5 may not be the answer! When I was using IE I would get the Please Try Later message after a certain amount of images. It seemed dependent on the average size of the images just how far I would get without being 'stonewalled'. I tried Refresh and a couple of other options but the only way around the problem was to log completely out of FS and open a New Session. By doing this I could view and download the same amount of images again before having the same problem so it was a case of having a New Session ready as the 'magic number' approached. It was no good just keeping the same session and navigating out of the image set and then navigating back again either. You had to physically open a New Session. And then if you forgot to close the Old Session then within a few images it would cause the new session to exhibit the same problem. Using Firefox I have not had the problem at all. Occasionally I will now get 'Image Unavailable' but that is easily fixed by either refreshing or just returning to that same image again. The only other issue is that occasionally a message will appear saying 'Sign In To View Image' and the best way to avoid that is to Sign In at the start of your session. Of course, I always forget to sign in until I get that darned message! CT
