Hi Vicci - Thoma is proving extremely elusive. I have searched the UK and Wales Census and not found him and have also checked Immigration records and the 1880 US Census withno sign of him. The only Thomas Holman who looked like a match in the US was with his brother John who was then age 41. FreeBMD seems to have no recognizeable entry for a death and certainly no marriage entry for him. If he came to Australia then I thin he must have discared the Trewhela name as I have never seen a record of him anywhere. But right up to 1871 he was recorded as Thomas T Holman so I would expect him to have retained the name. South Africa would seem a likely option I think. CT

Hi CT
thanks for looking. Thomas is not criticle to my tree, he was the brother of Margaretta, my partner's grt grandmother.
It's a rather sad tale. James Holman (father) killed his wife Philippa and was hanged at Bodmin Gaol in 1854. Thomas and Margaretta were split up and went to live with different uncles, Margaretta lived with uncle Elijah Holman in Mountain Ash Wales.
It would, however, be interesting to know what happened to Thomas, maybe he'll turn up some day!

Just tossing this one into the mix: a Thomas T Holman, age about 40, married Anna L Cartwright, 26, in Cook County, Illinois (i.e. Chicago) on December 25, 1895.
As I learn more about my Harvey-Trewhela crew, some of the older children relocated to Victoria, Australia, and some in the middle to the Midwest USA. So, Illinois would be a possibility.

When I was searching for information yestday I noticed a Thomas T Holman born about 1855. I thought he was in the Immigration Lists but I cannot find him there at the moment. Also no sign so far of the fellow from Illinois in the 1900 Census. All I have right now is a Thomas T Holman age 72 returning to the UK in 1928. I have copied the Marriage Licence for Thomas T Holman and Anna L Cartwright from Familysearch just in case it might be the man we are after. I also searched the Cook County Births and Deaths but can find nothing more connected to this couple. No sign in the 1910 US Census and I have also just now had a look at the Canadian Census collection and found nothing. Hmmmm! Seems if you go about things a little differently you get different results! In 1900 there is an Annie L Holman and a Thos T Holman in some sort of lodgings in Brooklyn. They are merely listed as 'boarders' but are not actually listed together. Annie L Holman was age 31 and born Illinois but states she has been married only 1 years. Thos T Holman was age 44 but he and his parents were all born Connecticut. He also states that he has been married for 12 years. I guess that rules him out any way. I don't usually take much, if any, notice of the 'Ancestry Hints' but I did notice in the 'Suggested Records' column that there was a Thomas Trowbridge Holman listed. Thomas Trowbridge Holman age 73 years 7 months (born 1855) birthplace Brookfield, Connecticut arrived in New York 2nd Apr 1929. As the Departure Port and Arrival Port were both New York it would appear this might have been a Cruise. In any case I think it might now solve the problem of our man married in Illinois especially as the passenger lists records this Thomas as a 'widower'. CT
