Hmmm - given the time period I think we are going to require the services someone who can access the 1911 Census.
William is at home with Joseph and Rachel at Penzance in 1901 and that is as far as I can get for now with Census records.
But there are other avenues that might be of some help.
We have Winifred as the name of a daughter for William Hill and we have been told that William went to South Wales. In 1911 he would have been in his early 20s so he may have married any time around or soon after the 1911 Census.
From 1912 the mother's maiden name can be found in the UK Birth Index so maybe we might be able to track something down that way while waiting results of a Census search.
Working on Wales and the name Winifred I have found two possibilities.
1. Winifred Hill born March Qtr 1916 Cardiff R.D. Vol 11a Page 681
Mother's maiden name - PEARSON
2. Winifred Hill born June Qtr 1917 Cardiff R.D. Vol 11a Page 842
Mother's maiden name - EVANS
The trick now is to see if we can find a William HILL married to one of these two.
While I am processing this lot I have now ALREADY received information from the 1911 Census!!
A William Hill age 22 and born St Just was staying with his aunt Mary Jane Nicholas on the night of the 1911 Census.
Mary Jane was a widow age 65 and had also been born at St Just so from that I am presuming, just for the moment, that she was a sister to Rachel.
This narrows the search a bit as we know William was still at St Just and still not married in 1911.
FreeBMD shows no result for a William Hill with a wife named PEARSON.
But we have several matches with EVANS for a wife!
Before I move on I need to say that until otherwise corrected I need to make a couple of assumptions.
Based on the 1891 and 1901 Census records I have assumed/deduced from FreeBMD that the children must be:-
Alma Annie Hill born June Qtr 1888
William Henry B Hill born June Qtr 1889
Joseph Thomas P Hill born June Qtr 1891
Winifred Hill born September Qtr 1893
If this is all correct then we now have the choice of two marriages for William!
1. William H HILL 1914 Merthyr T. Reg. Dist. Vol 11a Page 1477
married
Rachel H EVANS2. William H HILL 1914 Merthyr T. Reg. Dist. Vol 11a Page 1620
married
Margaret EVANSAfraid that is not as much help as it could be but it is a start.
But now looking at the birth of Winifred and something else enters the equation.
If one of these is 'your' William and I am correct that his wife was an Evans then it would appear Winifred had a twin sister!
Registered at the same time with identical registration details is RUBY HILL.
Of course - I may be totally on the wrong track with all of this
but it will give you something to think about!
