Joanne - I think the first thing that needs to be done here is to establish the true identity of William Rapson's wife. You have her as MITCHELL as does the OPC transcriber yet both Phillimore and FamilySearch show her name as GRIBBELL. I have sent a request to the OPC to see if this can be clarified so that you don't go heading down the garden path unnecessarily! It could be a case of an incorrect name being entered in the register and then the Bride signing her name correctly - something I have seen on more than just a few occasions. One that I solved recently involved a bride named ANN Michell who married Peter Barber at St Ives. When I saw the original record recently I noticed that the Vicar had entered Ann Michell at the head of the form but then the bride signed her name as MARY Michell and that then opened the door to solve about three outstanding problems that I had! One of the Witnesses was ANN Michell and Mary's mother was also Ann. Anyway, pending confirmation of whether the name is Mitchell or Gribbell I have taken a look at the rest of the family. It appears that William and Ann are the parents of Richard and that they had only seven children of a period of about 22 years. It is possible there may be a couple more children but if so then they were baptised in Parishes for which no transcriptions have yet been done. CT

I like to have the answers too ............ never know when the information will find its way into something else I end up working on! It may not be for several days until I get an answer to that query and it will also depend on the source film being available. Fingers crossed and will see what happens. But it is interesting that both IGI and Phillimore show the name as Gribbell whilst the OPC transcription is the one with Mitchell. That suggests to me that the transcriber took a closer look and read the entire record and that in turn suggests that he read the bride's signiature as Mitchell. What is a little unusual is that this discrepancy was not noted in the transcription. CT

I can now confirm that the wife of William Rapson was Ann GRIBBELL. I have seen a copy of the original entry in the Parish Register and her name is clearly entered as GRIBBELL at the top of the form by the Vicar. She has also clearly signed her name as Ann Gribbell.I don't know how Mitchell got confused into all of this ............ CT
