G'day,
I am looking for an Andrew Uren b. ca 1742 , m. Elizabeth Ambrose 21/4/1764 in Illogan, and begat Andrew bp. 27 May 1765, and Marjery bp. 14/1/1770.
Marjery duly married Thomas Gilbart/Jelbart/Gilbert 22/7/97 in Illogan. Their son Thomas Gilbart migrated to Australia 1848.
Does anyone recognise this Uren family ?

Another elusive one from the looks of things Bruce.  All I can find so far is from IGI/FamilySearch:- Andrew UREN married Catherine TREGUNNA 9th October 1739 Truro Willmot daughter of Andrew and Katherine Uren bp. 19th August 1744 St Michael Caerhays And according to IGI Andrew son of Andrew and Elizabeth Uren (bp. 1765) was buried at Illogan 29th March 1770. Bruce - you may find the following of interest and I think it indicates the previously mentioned marriage at Truro may be the correct one. These events are all at Illogan:- Andrew son of Andrew and Catherine Uren bp. 3rd February 1739 (old style) Children of Andrew and Elizabeth Andrew bp. 27th May 1765 Robert bp. 18th January 1767 Margery bp. 14th January 1770 Tiberia bp. 28th August 1774 (daughter) Elizabeth bp. 2nd June 1776 James Aver bp. 28th September 1777 Jenefer bp. 3rd January 1779 Grace bp. 24th August 1783 That may make things look a little better. Bruce - there are a few more items that can be added to the mix for you.  Andrew Uren buried 26th November 1818 Illogan age 79 James AVER married Tiberia UREN 10th February 1751 Illogan William JELBERT married Tiberia UREN 18th June 1803 Illogan If you look back at my previous post you will notice that Andrew and Elizabeth named a son James Aver Uren and also named a daughter Tiberia Uren. That would have to be a little more than coincidence I would have thought! There is also the marriage at Germoe in 1788 between Robert UREN and Rachel POTTER. This couple baptised at least four children at Illogan with one of those being Andrew so I suspect Robert will be the eldest surviving son of Andrew and Elizabeth. CT |

Jesting aside,
I had looked at the marriage of Andrew and Catherine in Truro but had discounted it on distance from Illogan.
I did not find the baptism ofAndrew son of Andrew and Catherine Uren bp. 3rd February 1739 (old style) in Illogan, but it is some months before the above marriage. Also Andrew's burial 26th November 1818 Illogan age 79 would make his birth year 1842 or thereabouts..The calendar change of 1751 should not alter dates that much. So possibly there is more than one family with similar names ? Caerhays too is a heck of a way from both Truro & Illogan.
The family of Andrew & Elizabeth though ties in very well. Especially with the 2 marriages into the Jelbert family.

Bruce - I see that the Old Style dates are catching you out!  The marriage of Andrew and Catherine was October 1739 and that is going to be October 1739 in anybodies language.  Son Andrew was baptised in February 1739 ( Old Style) but what you need to take into account here is that this was actually four months AFTER the marriage. There is no doubt in my mind that this is all the same family. Don't be troubled by the locations of these events. We don't know at the moment what occupation Andrew Uren was involved in but even so it was not all that unusual in those days to find people moving quite long distances. More considerations to take into account:- 1. Andrew was not a common name in the Uren family. FamilySearch shows 10 different Andrew Urens of whom only 4 were baptised prior to 1800. One of those was at Breage in 1607 and another not until 1797 and apart from your Andrew who married Elizabeth at Illogan there is only one other baptised at Creed in 1769 to Robert and Ann Uren. Andrew son of Andrew and Catherine at Illogan does not appear in FamilySearch. 2. Wilmot was also not common in the family in those days. FamilySearch shows only 3 baptised prior to 1800 of which two could have married Charles Retallack (below). But the second was at St Ives. Charles Retallack married Wilmot Uren 7th May 1769 at Illogan and that is one of only three marriages for Wilmot Uren in FamilySearch. Illogan is the main focus of your Uren family so everything points to this Wilmot being the daughter of Andrew and Katherine from St Michael Caerhays. I think you are on reasonable ground with the family I compiled in my last. It would be wise to 'keep the door open' and keep searching for information to help prove the links (or otherwise) but from what searching I have done it would appear the most likely scenario. CT |

You are right about some of them travelling distances at that time. Some of the blighters made it to Botany Bay that century.
I will take your advice and take on board Andrew and Catharine of Truro.

Hi Bruce - is there anything at all you can tell us about this William that might give some clues? There are three entries for William Uren within the time specified with all being sons of Stephen and Ann Uren. bp. 1st December 1799 bp. 21st October 1804 bp. 18th January 1807 I don't know anything more about Stephen and Ann at this stage. Stephen s/o William and Mary Uren bp. 31st Oct 1762 Illogan
Stephen Uren married Ann Bennetts 28th July 1798 Illogan
William bp. 1st December 1799 Illogan
Mary Ann bp. 8th February 1801 Illogan
Elizabeth bp. 6th March 1803 Illogan
William bp. 21st October 1804 Illogan
William bp. 18th January 1807 Illogan
Possible burials at Illogan 1813-1837:-
Anne Uren age 68 buried 5th June 1833
Stephen Uren age 56 buried 5th October 1818
That's about the best I can do until you can give me some more information on the William you are looking for.

Thanks CT The William that I was looking for was a witness to the marriage of Edward Jelbert & Ann Polkinghorne, Illogan, 3/5/1834.. I was figuring that Wiilliam may have been related to Marjory Uren, the mother of 3l Edward' Gilbert/Jelberts born about the same time. [ I have those details from David Crocker, POC] However, a colleague has since knocked that idea on the head, pointing out that this Edward [ h/o Ann P] was the son of Ann Jelbert nee Chapel , who was living with him & Ann in the 1851 census. It would also seem that William Uren was m. to Elizabeth Jelbert d/o the afforementioned Ann Jelbert Furthermore it appears that John Jelbert was the brother of Thomas b 1774 [ h/o Marjory Uren], and sons of John Gilbert and Jane Eplett.  If so William Uren in question was born in St Clout 1802 according to the 1851 census, and not Illogan . Any evidence to the contrary will be welcome ! |

They have to be @#$@#% joking!!  Firstly there is no such place as St Clout in Cornwall and secondly I just looked at that and I read the birthplace as LELANT!!!!! So if this William was actually born AND baptised at Lelant then he is probably going to be this fella:- William son of William and Margaret Uren bp. 25th July 1801 Lelant I believe the parents in this case to be William Uren and Margaret Penberthy who married at Lelant 12th June 1796. Methinks a lot more research needs to be done on William before we can be sure exactly where he belongs and who he belongs to. CT |

Ancestry transcriptions are done by the same people who write technical manuals for products sourced in some Asian countries.
Yes, Lelant is what is witten in the original document. However, the 1861 Census has him born in Illogan! Now aged 59, so still a possibility of his being of the lineage you suggested .

Bruce - given that William and Elizabeth used Penberthy as a second given name for one of their later daughters I think that my identification is very likely to be correct. The name used, Alice Penberthy, was the name of William Uren's maternal grandmother.
His age in 1861 is also consistent with that identification plus I noticed that in 1851 son Samuel was recorded as having been born at St Ives even though he was baptised at Illogan. William also had a brother Samuel Uren.
