John Halls Glasson was a subject from a long time ago and I have just had a brainwave that has added some information to it that has been in my possession for years but I could not work it out.
It relates to a death in 1931 for an Emily Glasson who died in Sydney, New South Wales - daughter of George Read and Eleanor. It showed that she married a Glasson in South Africa but there was no first name for him. The informant was Emily Zillah Haigh, a niece, and I searched many records trying to find where the Haigh family and the Read family made Emily Zillah a niece. While I did find a few connections they were of little help to finding out the mystery Glasson.
Then last night I did an "idle" Google search for "Emily Read" and Glasson - and pop - up came a set of images from the FamilySearch website for the St John the Divine parish in Belgravia, Johannesburg. Emily Read married John Christopher Glasson, son of John Halls Glasson, there on the 5th April 1907.
And then it all made sense.... like it usually does when you have the facts.....
John Christopher Glasson was en route to Melbourne.

No - she was the daughter of Jakeh Glasson and Jennifer Murrish and was baptized at Camborne in 1823.
If you go to the Quick Section (Surnames) you will find a thread from a few years back titled 'Quick Problem No. 2 - SCANDAL??!!' where you will find quite a long discussion and outline of what happened with John Quick and Ann Glasson.

Lannanta .... you surprise me!!! We spent a lot of time on this problem and I am sure we both agreed that the mother of Leonard Quick was the daughter of Jakeh and Jennifer. However, you now seem to disagree so perhaps I had better display a few facts to help convince you we were correct. 1. The Marriage Certificate for John Quick and Ann Glasson (copy courtesy of yourself) shows that Ann Glasson was the daughter of Jakeh Glasson, blacksmith. 2. We have two possible Ann Glassons involved with each being the daughter of a Jakeh Glasson who was a blacksmith. 3. The one difference between the two Jakeh Glassons is that one, husband of Philippa, was also an Innkeeper. The two potential Ann Glassons are:- 1. daughter of Jakeh and Jennifer (Murrish) Glasson of Gwinear baptized 14th June 1823 at Camborne. 2. daughter of Jakeh and Philippa (Quick) Glasson of St Ives baptized 9th August 1829 at St Ives. Ann Glasson's first child with John Quick was Ada born in 1846 at Lelant at which time Ann was 'of Polpeor' where I believe she was a servant. Ann would have been either 23 or 17 depending which of the two candidates she was. John Quick and Ann Glasson were eventually married in 1873 soon after John's first wife died. I could go through each Census and make comparisons but fortunately I don't have to go quite that far. In fact, I only need to use the 1851 Census to show which Ann was the wife of John Quick! 1851 Census Ayr Lane St Ives Joan QUICK, head, widow, 86, born St Ives Ann GLASSON, granddaughter, unmarried, 21, born St Ives This Ann Glasson is the one baptized at St Ives in 1829 and her mother Philippa was the daughter of Thomas Quick and JOAN (nee Williams). 1851 Census Green Lane Redruth Ann QUICK, head, married, 28, annuitant, born Phillack Sophia QUICK, daughter, 19 months, born Redruth You will recall that we had a lot of problems identifying the wife of John Quick. Ann was consistently recorded as 'Quick' and said she was married even though the marriage did not take place until 1873. It was a combination of the 1851 to 1881 Census records that helped solve the problem with daughters Ada and Sophia key to the solution. In 1851 'Edah Glasson' was lodging with Ann Curnow (nee Prows) at Lelant. Ann Quick (nee Glasson) was fairly consistent with her age and in 1881 stated she was 58 which is once again pointing at 1822/3. Perhaps even more crucial in this Census is that she gave her birthplace as GWINEAR! And she died in 1890 at the age of 67 thus adding further to the probability that she had to be the daughter of Jakeh and Jennifer. I stand by my earlier statement in this discussion and I stand by my earlier work on this problem - I have no doubt that the Ann Glasson who married John Quick and who was the mother of Leonard Quick was the daughter of Jakeh Glasson and Jennifer Murrish! You may be right that Ann Glasson of Polpeor did not remain a spinster but I appear to have no further trace of her after the 1851 Census.

Yes I agree with that.. there is a marriage certificate somewhere that shows that as you say.
What I am saying is that I do not think the mother of Leonard was the mother of Ada (Edah) as we concluded, and I do not think that her aunt, Ann Glasson of Polpeor was childless.. in fact I think that the older Ann was the mother of Ada.

I was actually just looking over that part of the problem again since I posted my last but before I go on there is one thing I am not sure you ever had an answer to. In one of your posts about Ada Glasson you asked if she had been found after the 1881 Census. I believe that part of the problem was answered with her marriage to Edward Maddern in 1882. She was recorded as 'Edith' but signed 'Eda' and Heather found a likely marriage for her in 1904 in FreeBMD. The Lelant Western Cemetery Burial Register shows that Ada Maddern of Gonew age 57 was buried in the Western Cemetery at Lelant 9th September 1904. It also records she was married which fist with Heather's finding of Edward Maddern as a widower in 1911. Now for Ada's mother. Our problem really starts with the 1841 Census where it appears both of our potential mother's are at Polpeor. Ann daughter of Joseph and Wilmot is with her family whilst the Ann Glasson in that same household as a female servant appears to have been the daughter of Jakeh and Jennifer! BTW - in case you did not have it I have just found a burial for Annie daughter of Joseph and Wilmot:- Annie Glasson, single woman of Madron Union age 81, buried 14th December 1896 Western Cemetery, Lelant, "common funeral" (she was still at Polpeor Farm with brother James in 1891) We really have absolutely nothing to tie Ada to one or other of the two Ann Glassons given both were at Polpeor in 1841. The younger Ann was at Redruth by 1849 when Sophia was born but without anything to tell us where she was between 1841 and 1849 there is nothing to suggest that she was not the mother of Ada. About the only thin piece of information we have that might be used to help identify Ada's mother is the fact that after her birth Ada can never be found with her. There area number of arguments that might be used to suggest why this might have been the case with either of the two Ann Glassons. In the case of the daughter of Joseph and Wilmot it may have been something to do with the views of her family and in the case of the daughter of Jakeh and Jennifer it might have been that John Quick was not the father. BUT - I am beginning to lean to your way of thinking for one reason only - the younger Ann (daughter of Jakeh and Jennifer) had seven known children (excluding Ada) with John Quick between 1849 and 1865. During this time John Quick was separated but still married to his first wife and it was not until after she died in 1873 that he and Ann Glasson were married. In 1851 John Quick and wife Mary were still living together at Gonew so if his future second wife was the mother of Ada then there is no logical reason why Ada should not be with her at Redruth in 1851. No link can be found to William and Ann (Prows) Curnow with whom Ada is lodging in 1851 and the distance between Lelant and Redruth suggests it unlikely Ada might be left with them if her mother was at Redruth. And Ann Glasson/Quick was still at Redruth in 1852 and then at Phillack in 1855 when son John was born. Even in 1861 this family was still at Phillack even though children were born at Lelant and Towednack in 1857 and 1859 and by 1861 Ann Glasson was recorded as a servant to John Quick. I think I might agree now that it is probably more likely Ada's mother might have been the daughter of Joseph and Wilmot so I will amend my database accordingly. CT

It is these two newspaper clippings referring to the older Ann's brother James that made me change my mind.
Referring to the farm sale - it was the Olds family that took over from the Glassons and they were later able to purchase it outright and still own Polpeor to this day although I understand that due to its relatively small size and today's modern farming practices it is leased.
Back to Ann, this article is suggesting that Ann, daughter of Joseph and Wilmot, had a daughter.
Yes she died in the Madron Union Workhouse on the 10th December 1896. James died in the same place on the 8th October 1900.

That would seem to clinch it then. Are you certain about this as the date of death for James? According to the Lelant Western Cemetery Burial Register transcript I have James was buried on the 8th. I would doubt that he would have died at Madron and then been carted across to burial at Lelant on the very same day. CT

You may remember we discussed this lady at length. I think I have finally worked out what happened to her.
I believe that she married a certain Walter Brailey at the Register Office in St Thomas district, Devon on the 9th April 1863. The marriage entry shows her as the daughter of Thomas Glasson, a deceased miner.
I have not found her in the 1871 census but I have found the couple in 1881 in Marylebone in London.. Ann being a 58 year old laundress from Crowan. Walter was a 45 year old shoemaker born in Exeter. From this information I am reasonably happy that she is the Ann we originally started to discuss.

Lannanta - very good, another tricky one solved. The Marriage place - was that the Register Office at St Thomas, Exeter?? Also - reading through the early parts of this thread and I am still not quite sure of one thing. Was Jane Uren Glasson the Jane baptized in 1847 to Ann?? You seemed to suggest Jane Uren Glasson was the daughter of Robert Glasson Spurr but was there another Jane Glasson birth to match that baptism as daughter of Ann?? CT

This Jane was the daughter of Ann
This is Jane Uren, daughter of Robert Spurr Glasson, eventually married William Semmens in 1873.
I only have it as St Thomas in Devon.
