Hi from Oz!! My ancestry goes back to Uny Lelant with the Galls (earlier spelling also found (Gale) - I have been trying to track down who the parents of James Gall were. He lived in Lelant I think from about 1777 - 1837 (approx). We know he married a Margaret Ninnis (poss "Ninis") in 1802 at Lelant Church. They had a number of children of which I now have well documented but am stumped to find out about James's parents. From what I can find all our ancestry is from Lelant and I am the only one so far born outside of Cornwall. If anyone can help with info on James Gall (Gale) it would be most appreciated? Cheers Murray

Welcome to Penwith Genealogy Murray. I must say that I have puzzled over this fella a bit in the past but having now had another look I think I have come up with an answer. If you take a look at the names of the children baptised at Lelant there is one 'standout' name - John Curtis Gale baptised 13th June 1813. That, to me, seems like an obvious clue. Prior to the marriage of James and Margaret there is no record of the name GALE/GALL at Lelant. In fact the closest examples of the name I can find prior to 1802 in the Western part of Cornwall are two baptisms at Manaccan in 1758 and then 1785. That suggests that the name does not belong in the area and therefore suggests that the information regarding James Gall's birthplace in the 1851 Census is incorrect. A check of IGI offers only one possibility in all of Cornwall that would match the approximate birthdate of James and that is:- James son of James GALE bp. 2nd November 1777 Launceston, St Mary Magdalene. And that is right up on the Tamar which is quite some distance from Lelant! BUT - bearing in mind the baptism of son John CURTIS Gale I think the following is a little more than interesting. James GALE married Jane COURTIS 12th February 1775 Launceston, St Mary Magdalene I think you will find that this is the missing family of your James Gale/Gall. CT

CT - just wanted to say thanks. Yes, the the middle name of Curtis for James and margaret's son John Curtis Gall is a strong clue!! Actually I also noticed some months ago James at Launceston St Mary in the IGI but I simply didn't twig about the Courtis connection and dismissed it at the time... Thanks again!! Cheers Murray

Murray - Launceston is a long way from Lelant but it does not mean that people did not travel way back then. Many people seem to be under the impression that if someone lives or was born more than about 2 Parishes away then they could not possibly be related because people did not move! Don't believe a word of it! ;D CT
