Very many thanks in advance..My Gt Gt Grandparents were William Prisk and Elizabeth Rowe...Elizabeth born about 1811 Marazion the daughter of Perran Rowe and Mary Dunn or was she? I have added their marriage information but as it does not state Fathers name I have not always been convinced she was the daughter of Perran Rowe and Mary Dunn..There seems to have been two Elizabeth Rowe's born about the same time in Marazion..I have nothing on the two witnesses and wondered also if they could have been related in some way..
Thankyou
Marion

Marion - the Joseph Tregloan who witnessed the marriage appears to be the same man who married Sarah Broad at St HIlary 23rd August 1823. I have been unable to find any connection so far between the Broad, Tregloan and Rowe families. Josias Luke, the other witness, appears to have been from elsewhere and I have not found a marriage or any other information that might connect him in any way. Neither of the witnesses seem to have witnessed any other marriage at St Hilary within a couple of years so it would appear likely they were either 'friends' or just 'convenient' at the time. You mention that there appear to have been two Elizabeth Rowes born around the same time at Marazion but so far I can find only the one baptism. Elizabeth daughter of Perran and Mary Rowe baptised 21st July 1811 at Marazion You are wise to be cautious, particularly with such common names, but it certainly appears at the moment that your Elizabeth was the daughter of Perran. CT, Here is the information I have in regards to the Baptisms..I tend to agree with you that the two witnesses must have been friends or just convenient at the time of the marriage..

CT, While searching I found a couple of marriages that might help in the search for Elizabeth being the daughter of Perran Rowe and Mary..
My Gt Grandmothers brother......
11/17 Jan 1868 Banns Thomas Prisk (marked) 19 Miner St Hilary [father William Prisk, Blacksmith] Eliza Jane Andrewartha (marked) 20 Mine Girl St Hilary [father Charles Andrewartha, Miner] Witnesses: William H Wearne, Elizabeth Jane Roberts
Never seen this one before CT but it does mention the name Perran Rowe...A younger one no doubt....
4 Jul 1863 Banns John Hollow Rowe (marked) 23 Husbandman Marazion [father Perran Rowe, Miner] Grace Harvey Semmens (signed) 25 St Hilary [father William Semmens, Miner Witnesses: William Semmens, Elizabeth Wearn
The surname Wearn CT seems to ring a bell but nothing found on my tree with that surname..Hmmm? Semmens don't have that one either but I do have Simmons..I hope that I am not going off the track here CT..
Bye

Marion - This Perran was married at St Hilary 27th February 1836 to Mary Hollow (appears to be written as 'Hallow' in the marriage record). He could be the son of Perran and Mary and, therefore, brother to Elizabeth or he could be the son of John and Thomasine Rowe. One was baptised in 1805 and the other in 1806 at Marazion and I would think both are grandsons of the earlier Perran and Frances Rowe. The Wearn and Semmens names are fairly common but the most difficult part with them is the amount of variations. Wearn can be found as Wearne, Warne, Werren and others. Semmens can be Simons, Simmons, Symons etc. But let's cross one hurdle at a time. CT

Hi everybody
Just reading this thread and presume when Marion mentions that there are two Eliza(beth) Rowes who hail from St Hilary, she is referring to a little problem of mine. I have discussed this with Marion (in another place) and accept that everything points to her Elizabeth Rowe being the wife of William Prisk but it doesn't solve the mystery below.
Eliza Rowe who lived with William Grenfell (can't find any evidence of a marriage) states in two census returns that she came from St Hilary. Why? She and husband William produced numerous children, one of whom became the Town Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances for St Ives, despite once being an illiterate roadman.
Naturally when I studied Eliza's background I assumed she was the daughter of Perran Rowe who was baptised at St Hilary 1841 Census. I offer you the evidence below...who was she?

Hi Graylight - an interesting problem you have here and it seems that it might take a little longer yet before it is truly resolved. However, after doing a little searching around, including locating baptisms for the children, I have to wonder whether Eliza was actually a Rowe at all. Yes - the name Rowe appeared among her children. A son was named Peter Rowe Grenfell and when he died another son was given that name. Question - why use the name 'Peter Rowe'? But aside from Rowe I think you need to ask about the name given to the youngest son - Frederick Thomas Badcock Grenfell! Badcock is a name found around Paul and Paul was one of three Parishes given at different times as Eliza's birthplace. So what I think you need to do is to try and find if there is any connection to a Peter Rowe in this family and you also need to think about the possibility that Eliza may have been a Badcock and not a Rowe. I cannot locate a marriage yet but pursuing these other options might help. CT

Cheers CT
When I was composing my post I 'googled' Peter Rowe Grenfell to find a previous link I had. Through this I uncovered a Scottish website. Peter (and one of brothers- I think) moved up to Lanarkshire to mine coal. Anyhow the website suggested that his mother was Eliza Badcock but they hadn't backed up this claim. I will enquire but the post was about 2 year old. It just seems strange that she should cite St Hilary as her birthplace on two censuses. This will not be the first unanswerable question we come up against.

And if I remember correctly she stated on another Census that she was born at ST IVES!
And if you triangulate the three Parishes of birth she nominated - Paul, St Hilary and St Ives - it pretty well lands you on the border of Towednack, Lelant and Ludgvan! ;D
But with Badcock used in the name of Frederick I would think there might be a connection somewhere.

Just to muddy the waters (as I often do); I have a Elizabeth Rowe 21 July 1811 Marazion married to a Thomas Prisk, with at least 3 children. Several Census returns confirm this fact. My interest in the ROWEs is through William R.1819 Madron, parents Richard and Jennifer (or Jane) as indicated by the bap.records.I am trying to find Richard`s DOB and identity of father and while googling the names/various parishes nearby came across a GRENFELL married to a R Rowe.....
