I am new to the site. I am researching the surnames Glasson and Champion. James Glasson, b. 20 Apr 1820 and spouse Jane (either Mill or Rowe) migrated to U.S. in early 1840's to Wisconsin. Richard Champion, b 14 Jul 1817 and spouse Sarah Rowe, b. 1817, Migrated early 1840's to Wisconsin. First generation kids married and are my ggrandparents. Mark (onelegup)

Mark - we have a couple of Glasson experts here - Carol and Lannanta - who I am sure will be keen to get involved with this conversation and help you along. You have indicated that most of your ancestors were from the Camborne area so it might be as well to get the conversation going under the Camborne Parish heading. There is a section for the Glasson name but I think your Champion and Rowe families might get a little lost if we use that forum. So tell us as much as you can about your emigrant ancestors and that will help us find where they belong. CT

Continuing - Richard Champion arrived in the US in 18/41 moved to Hazel Green, Grant County, Wisconsin and is documented there in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, & 1900 United States Census Reports - Richard died 6 Sep 1901, Sarah d. 20 Feb 1895 Glasson - James Glasson, b. 1820 in Camborne, Cornwall. - I found a James Glasson, b. 20 Apr 1820 that was Christened on 1 Jul 1820 at the Parish of Camborne, father Richard Glasson, mother Margaret Rowe (married 15 DEc 1804) My James came to the US in 1840. In all of the Census reports I have (with Harriet as a child born in Wisconsin) the spouse is Jane. I have one reference from a researcher that she is listed as Jane Mill. In the "History of Grant County, WI 1881" it states that James was b. in Cornwall, came to the US in 1840, settled in Jo Daviess county, Illinios for two years, moved to Grant County, Wiscinsin and married Jane Warner, a native of England. One other report shows a James Glasson (on 12 June 1845) age 24 of Cross Street in Camborne, son of Richard, a miner, marrying a Jane Rowe, 24 of Cross Street in Camborne, daughter of William Rowe, a miner at Wesleyen Chapel, Copperhouse. So, I'm not sure what teh maiden name of Jane is. I will try and get the marriage record of James Glasson, if he married in the US This probably makes it all very confusing...on the Glassons that is. onelegup

Hello Mark
Welcome to the board and we have already exchanged emails earlier this week. I have included the marriage record on here for the benefit of others and I am reasonably sure that it is the correct one for you.

Mark - I am totally confused! You start by mentioning Glasson and Champion ancestors but then you tell us about Richard Champion and Sarah Rowe. Then there is a bit about James Glasson and his wife Jane. We have a Jane Rowe with father James and a Sarah Rowe with father William and a Richard Glasson with mother Margaret Rowe but at this point I have absolutely no idea where Richard Champion fits into the picture! Apart from that it is possible that this might be the man you are looking for:- Richard son of William (miner) and Ann Champion of Trevorrian baptised 27th March 1818 at Camborne IF he is the right man then his parents would be:- William Champion, tinner, married Anne Holman 27th October 1810 at Camborne CT

CT & Lannanta, Sorry to confuse.....I'll start over and stick with the Glasson's. James Glasson immigrated from Cornwall sometime in the 1840's. I have not been able to find immigration information such as a passenger list. According to a publication named "The History of Grant County, Wisconsin - 1881", James came to the U.S. in 1840, settled in Illinios for two years then moved to Grant County, Wisconsin. There he married Jane Warner, a native of England (does not say where in England). They had seven children....Harriet, Margaret, James W, John, Benjamin, and Milton Warner. The oldest, Harriet was born in Wisconsin and is 11 in the 1860 census report form Hazel Green, Grant County, Wisconsin. I have had his wife Jane listed in my tree as Jane Mill for a number of years (not sure where I got that information as I have no citations listed). The fact that the last child is named Milton Warner Glasson leads me to believe that a Jane Warner entered the picture at some time. Harriet Glasson married John Champion, b. July 1852 in Wisconsin. John Champion is the son of Richard Champion and Sarah Rowe, both from Cornwall. In the 1900 census Richard is then a widower and is listed as arriving in the U.S. in 1841. I do not have immigration citations on Richard and Sarah. Harriet Glasson and John Champion are my g grandparents

CT & Lannanta, On the Champion side....on Sarah Champion's death certificate Place - Hazel Green, Grant, Wisconsin Spouse - Richard Champion Date of death - 20 Feb 1895 Date of birth - 1817 Birthplace - Cornwall Father - James Rowe Mother - Sarah Rowe i don't know if this helps from your end. They would seem to fit your possible in an earlier posting. I do not know if Richard and Sarah were married in Cornwall or in the U.S. All of their children were born in Wisconsin. Mark

Thanks Mark - that clears things up a little. I will try and review all of this later in the day but at the moment it is 'head down and ___ up' with another problem that needs resolution. A scan through FreeBMD indicates the probability that Richard Champion and Sarah Rowe may have married in the U.S. which means that the marriage record may be more than a little difficult to find. I found myself unwittingly on the trail of this James Glasson again So this is my hypothesis at the moment.
It is near to certain that the James Glasson mentioned is the son of Richard Glasson and Margaret ROWE.
It is also very possible that James Glasson was in the USA in 1840 as suggested while at the same time his mother Margaret can be found in the 1841 UK Census at Camborne with another son Benjamin Glasson.
James Glasson returned to Cornwall and married Jane ROWE (aged 24 years) in 1845. There is a shipping entry for a Jane Glasson (aged 21 years) to the USA later in 1845 but I have not checked to see if it is the wife of James - an intial glance suggests the ages are three or so years out.
In 1850 James appears in the Federal Census in Lafayette, Wisconsin with a 24 year old wife Jane and a baby Harriet under one year, in addition to a 60 plus year old Margaret Glasson - most likely the mother of James - her other son Benjamin emigrates here as well.
It is my contention that Jane ROWE died after the marriage and that this Jane is the Jane WARNER referred to earlier in this thread.
In the 1860 Federal Census James and Jane and children are at Hazel Green township.
In the 1870 Federal Census there is no Jane and although columns are available in the census sheets no marriage information was entered for all persons on the relevant sheet. I contend that Jane WARNER was the 47 year old Jane Glasson of Hazel Green who appeared in the Mortality Schedule in August 1869 having died from breast cancer.
In the 1880 Federal Census James and Jane are at Hazel Green with four children plus a 7 year old Milton Glasson. So I would suggest that this Jane is Jane MILLS and this marriage was 1872 at Lafayette, Wisconsin. In the marriage record for Milton W. Glasson in 1896 his parents are listed as James Glasson and Jane MILL.
James died in 1900 and his will includes an allowance for his beloved wife Jane. It also includes an allowance for one of his daughters, Margaret, who married Mr Mills.
A James Mill, who died in 1862 is remembered in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lafayette. Also remembered on the same memorial is a Jane Glasson Mill who died in 1905. I am tending toward this being the third wife Jane, although I have not looked for her in the 1910 Federal Census yet.
So three wives, all with the name Jane.

Thanks for the update Lannanta - it is certainly confusing to encounter a situation like this with three wives of the same name but then it is not totally unheard of. I have more than one similar instance in my database! ** I have decided to move this thread to the GLASSON forum where it will be more relevant. It is nine years since the thread was active and the original poster does not appear to have been active in that time. ** CT

Thanks Ian
I would like to ask for some assistance here, particularly for those who have access to Wisconsin and even Iowa records.
James Glasson had seven children (at least) and these seven children all reached adulthood and are mentioned in his will.
Birth years are approximate but are: Harriet - 1849 - Wisconsin - married John CHAMPION - at marriage mother said to be Jane GLASSON - in 1900 was at Idaho Springs, Colorado. Margaret J. - 1854 - Wisconsin - married MILLS - in 1900 was at Dennison, Iowa. James W. - 1855 - Wisconsin - married Mary Anna INGRAM - at marriage mother said to be Jane ROWE - in 1900 at Hazel Green John - 1857 - Wisconsin - in 1900 at Hazel Green Richard - 1858 - Wisconsin - in 1900 was at Britt, Iowa Benjamin - 1860 - Wisconsin - married Ella TEASELED - at marriage mother said to be Margaret ROWE - in 1900 at Hazel Green Milton W. - 1872 - Wisconsin - married Arilla S. ANDREWS - at marriage mother said to be Jane MILL - in 1900 at Hazel Green
If anybody can access the marriage or death records for these seven children and hopefully find the parents listed there, then that would help to prove my earlier post.
I am starting to think that the second wife Jane (WARNER) is an error on my part. Actually on reflection and viewing the 1860 Census - James Mills and wife Jane Mills at Lafayette and also a 22 year old William Warner at the same address. In the 1870 Federal Census Jane Mills is a widow. So just two Jane's it would appear - Jane ROWE (1820 to 1869) and Jane MILLS nee WARNER (1830 to 1905).
Comments would be appreciated.

Hey, Lannanta, I will be in Wisconsin about 6 weeks from now and a former classmate was a postmistress in Iowa (retired now.) Tell me what you need and I will take a stab at it. Records can be ordered in Wisconsin and delivered to the college 10 min W of my sister's house. We are a bit out from Hazel Green and Iowa County (and the State of) but this could be doable.

Lannanta - I have found a couple of things on FamilySearch that may be helpful. I may be duplicating some things you already have but I am sure you won't mind that. Zibetha's offer is certainly a great option (and, I am sure, most appreciated) as that will hopefully give access to the original records which will be of most help to you. Meantime here is what I have 'turned up'. In 'Wisconsin Marriages, 1836-1830:- Richard Glasson married Lizzie Watsworth at Shullsburg, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin 22nd June 1882 (he born Hazel Green son of James Glasson and Jane and she daughter of Robert and Annie Watsworth) www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRPQ-ZK7James Glasson and Jane Mills were married at Mrs Going's, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin 13th August 1872 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRPQ-9QWJames W Glasson married Mary Anna Ingram 24th March 1898 Grant Co., Wisconsin (he son of James Glasson and Jane Rowe and she daughter of Richard Ingram and Elizabeth Jennings) www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRJ6-2RXThat is all I can find related to the family in question but there are a number of other Glasson marriages that might be of interest. I will take a look at births and baptisms and post anything I find in a following message. CT
