And now my chasing of the Ninnes family to South Australia and back has led me right back into the Roach Mire!
However! - after a couple of hours 'chewing' on all the bones I have finally cracked the case of the two girls named Mary Roach who were each the daughter of a Thomas and Mary! ;D
I had to refer to the Public Family Trees on Ancestry to try and find some leads and I kept coming across the reference of Thomas Roach and Mary Michell.
That one has surfaced before and keeps annoying me but this time I was determined to find an answer. ;D
There was a Thomas Roach who married Mary Michell at Redruth 25th September 1819.
But because I only have IGI/FamilySearch as a reference I have no further information that might be included in the Parish Register.
Very much now a case of 'hope' that something more can be found.
The only other evidence of the existence of this family was the baptism of daughter Mary.
Mary daughter of Thomas and Mary Roach of Illogan was baptised at Camborne 12th August 1820.
The other couple in question is Thomas Roach and Mary Thomas who were married at Towednack 10th August 1817.
This couple had a rather large family of 16 children at least some of those children came out to South Australia with their parents.
But it was only 'some' of the children. Eldest son Thomas was married in Wales and brother William was there with him at one point.
But it is daughter Mary who was the thorn in my side in regards to the Ninnes family.
All my information suggested that Mary daughter of Thomas and Mary (nee Thomas) married John White, miller, at Towednack 22nd January 1849.
Both were 'of Towednack' and Mary was daughter of Thomas Roach, miner.
But then I discovered that Joseph Ninnes of Towednack married Mary Roach at Lelant 27th November 1847.
Mary was of Lelant and was daughter of Thomas Roach, miner.
Quite a lot here was simply not making sense and it really started to twist my poor old brain when I realised that the large family of Thomas and Mary (nee Thomas) had moved to Lelant sometime around 1830.
Remember that it was JOSEPH NINNES who started all of this by being married to Mary ROACH with whom he had five children born in South Australia.
So the dilemma is - Which Mary Roach!
Mary bp. 12th August 1820 at Camborne d/o Thomas and Mary of Illogan
Mary bp. 30th June 1822 at Towednack d/o Thomas and Mary of Towednack
Just to make matters worse - Joseph Ninnes remarried in 1863 yet there is no record in the Death Index for SA of the death of Mary! (Information is included in a couple of those Family Trees on Ancestry)
I had tried in the past to find more information on the White family but could never find them in the 1851 Census.
I tried again today but still no sign of them but more importantly there was no sign of them in South Australia either!
In desperation I tried the 1861 Census ..................... BINGO!!!
1861 Census Towednack
Nancledra
John WHITE, head, mar, 39, miller, born Zennor
Mary do., wife, mar, 38 born Illogan
Emily do., daur, 1, born Towednack
Mary ROACH, mother-in-law, widow, 73, born Towednack
So - it was Mary from Illogan who married John White which means that the wife of Joseph Ninnes was the daughter of Thomas Roach and Mary Thomas! ;D
But this Census record gives me much more than that.
it also tells me that Mary MICHELL was from Towednack before she married at Redruth and it might also now give me a clue as to the identity of the other Thomas Roach.
I knew there must be a reason the Sun is shining so bright here today!
And I have just solved the Thomas Roach side of the problem!
The husband of Mary Michell was baptised at Towednack 5th October 1788 son of William Roach and Grace (nee Thomas) and he died at Nancledra, Towednack 15th August 1858.
In case some of you are thinking that I have gone way off track with all of this Roach business I should perhaps explain.
This all started because of the marriage of JOSEPH NINNES to Mary Roach.
BUT the two men named Thomas Roach who became involved in this problem were both descended from the marriage at Towednack on October 22nd, 1746 between Robert Roach and Jane Ninnes! ;D
And a little snippet especially for Sue - Mary Michell was baptised at Towednack 20th August 1786 daughter of Matthew Michell and Mary CURNOW. (I am still not sure which Mary Curnow this is so perhaps you might now have an answer. )
