Thanks CT.....as I said, red herrings. It was only the coincidence of Eddy, Hosking, South Africa, gold mining and St Buryan which made me jump.

Rob Oats! This is a side note to the subject posted but when you mentioned Thomas Oats in South Africa it struck a chord. Long story made short. I have been playing with some photos from a trip to St. Just, photos of grave markers and memorials of Oats family. I was shocked to find a stone bench which mentions a Thomas Oats in South Africa. Should have noticed it earlier. Writing is not very legible but I am curious to know if you are familiar with this "bench".

There were others apart from my gr-grandfather. There is family grave near the door to the Anglican Church in St Just that commemorates a Thomas Oats who died in Kimberley, South Africa, 1891. Son of Richard and brother to William, first mayor Southern Cross, Western Australia. Is this the one you are thinking of? Said man led me a very long chase as I believed that he was the "one". He had a untimely end, that ruffled more than a few "official" feathers back then, among the more prestigious members of the Kimberley community.
Turns out that said Thomas went down to the local for a few beers with his mates. At closing time around 23:00 he and his mate were shooting the breeze on a street corner prior to parting ways for the night. The same evening the local dignitaries held a banquet hosted by the mayor. Things got a bit out of hand and it was suggested that they give their new horse drawn fire engine a test run. With many of the male dignitaries on board, they raced around the town.
Thomas and his mate stepped off the curb to cross the street and were confronted by the fire engine as it came around the corner. Thomas tried to get across the road and his mate headed backwards. Thomas was unfortunately hit by the lead horse and suffered fatal chest and abdominal injuries and died the following day.
The subsequent inquest was told of the absolute sobriety of the men on the fire engine and their absolute need to conduct a "surprise" trial of the new machine and the conclusion that Thomas had had one too many and failed to heed the warning bells being sounded by the crew on the fire engine. Verdict; death by mis-adventure.

Up-date on info. I have spotted an article in the paper about William Trembath Eddy in September 1894. He was taken to Court, and an Order was made to support his child by Mary Jane Stevens at 2s 6d per week until it was 13. He had been engaged to her for two years but denied parentage of this child...possibly it was a boy (Willie), but am still trying to find the correct GRO ref at the moment. For some reason he was desperately needed in South Africa by my ggrandfather Richard Eddy just before he was due to appear in Court...me thinks me spots a family trait here as although he married my ggrandmother he promptly went off to South Africa and didn't support her or their children in this Country either Poppy

Hi CT,
No, I still don't know what happened to him after the family obituary saying that in 1907 he was still in South Africa.
Another tit bit about James Eddy b1846-1915,, the wife I found to him Sarah Jane Hosking claimed all his estate after he died although she hadn't lived with him for years and years....£2000 odd, that was a fortune in 1915.
Also the SA cousin you put me in touch with came to see me again last week,...she sends her regards to you and thanks for making all this possible. Poppy
