Just to comment on South African files. The record I posted above for James EDDY who died 1924; the file number of the record is stated; 54234. The record states "Part 1" which may indicate this to be a complex file. The file will/should contain the death notice which records the names of parents, place of birth, children and next of kin. It will contain the probate record that went through the Master of the High Court. This file should be lodged in the archives in Pretoria. I have seen a number of these records of relatives of mine in South Africa. However you need to find a friendly researcher or relative, which I think you already have who is prepared to visit the archive. They don't allow photo copies as they are legal documents so they need to armed with a note pad and pencil (they don't allow pens).

I am working on the friendly relative bit Rob ;D. My emails have turned in to Family History facts and problems with SA records, in the hope she might bite . She mentioned that this week-end she came across a Book of Miners in SA in the 1900's in a shop, but didn't recognise any of the names...it's a start! Thank you for the Ref number. Poppy

Keep at 'em Poppy. South Africa is not the easiest place to find information let alone get a hold of it.

There isn't enough information for proof of a connection on the certificate, so another to add to your Data Base CT 11 Jan 1915 Boscaswell. James Eddy 67 a Tin Miner, Informant James Eddy, Nephew of Nancherrow Terrace, St Just James Eddy 1846, did have a nephew James Eddy born 1878, child of his brother Richard Eddy and Sarah Trembath, he was living with them in 1901. I will send for the marriage certificate now. Poppy

Hi Poppy - that is the problem with British Death Certificates, they just do not provide for enough information! In Victoria there is provision for Names of Parents, Spouse details, Children names, ages and whether living or dead and during one period there was even provision for 'time in Colonies stating which'. Nevertheless - it is something we did not know before and if it is not your elusive James then the information will certainly help with one of the other Eddy families of St Just. CT

Hi CT, I still think there is a good chance of the death certificate being for my James When I have more pennies I will start requesting Obituaries, as they are a really good source of information. I sent for the 1898 Marriage Certificate yesterday. It's the notes from the Journal of his niece that are causing the problem, no dates mentioned though. They imply James died in the UK because they searched his room/house after his death for the money he had promised Sarah Eddy, nee Trembath. Then it goes on to say, his wife got all of it but eventually did give them family something The Free records on-line for QLD are amazing. I was able to trace my Helsdon family through the years and match up with all Free on-line Newspaper articles about them. If only the UK was as generous, and our BMD's give very little information. G'day Poppy - that will be interesting if it is indeed your James particularly with that 1924 South African record we now know about. Keep us informed and I will keep my eyes open as well. I have been checking transcribed South African BMDs through the Rootsweb Archives so it will be interesting to see if anything turns up. Problem is that this stuff all seems to be Wesleyan and other Methodist records rather than the mainstream Church but you never know. CT

Oh dear! Your James is proving very elusive. However, at least this is another possibility eliminated and we can at least now place the James who married Elizabeth Oates. I think he is probably the son of William Eddy and Caroline (nee Watters) of St Just who married 5th August 1855 at St Just. William was widowed and then married Mary Ann Lawry in 1874. Son James was born in 1870 which matches the marriage record and his father William was buried St Just Wesleyan 30th December 1893. James also had a brother Alfred who would be the first witness but I am not sure who George Eddy would be. I am not updating my database with this yet as I would like to identify George first. CT

Hi CT, That's the conclusion I came too , but haven't re-searched George yet. It does take patience finding these Eddy's families when they all appear to have Richard, William, Thomas and James etc in every family... Do you think I should change the title of the Thread to include James, making it easier for someone else re-searching a James Eddy ? And would you like a copy of the recent certificates I have for your Files?. Regards, Poppy

Oh dear, another dis-appointment. There wasn't an Obituary for James Eddy died 1915 in the New papers I still can't trace a marriage PR for a James Eddy who married in1882. on the same page is listed Sarah Jane Hoskings. In 1911 there is a James Eddy living with the Prisk family as a Boarder who says he is married..where is his wife though.? In 1911 there is a Sarah J Eddy living with her brother John Hoskings who says she is married...where is her husband? I will have to send for the cert if I can't find a PR, as both are of the age/ area I am looking at. The Will in 1915 would sit nicely with both of their names....and with the story in the family journal that says his wife left him. Poppy

Hi Poppy - I don't know how I did it but I seem to have missed your posting of May 18th! The answer to that is - yes, please, copies of the certificates would be appreciated as I still have a lot of work to do on the Eddy families. It seems everything is conspiring against us on this one! The other couple in that entry is also of interest to me given the groom for that marriage is Charles Hichens Quick. I thought I might have some information on Charles that might help determine which was the bride of James Eddy but unfortunately I do not. The only thing I can find is that Florence Elizabeth Dennis was born at Penzance and was living there in 1881. I cannot find Charles Hichens Quick anywhere although someone on Ancestry has a Tree that claims he died in Wales later in the 1900s. I tried the 1891 and 1901 Census for Wales but there appears to be no sign of him. It looks like the marriage was either at Penzance or in a Chapel but my collection of marriages for Penzance ends at 1880 but with a few scattered ones from 1888 onwards. Let's hope that Lannanta or one of our other Quick researchers might have some details of the wife of Charles Hichens Quick. That will at least tell us if Sarah Jane Hosking married James Eddy. CT

Hi CT, Certificates are on their way This marriage is interesting, especially as I find two people of the same names living separately in the 1911. I think it's worth buying a certificate. Back to William Trembath Eddy and the Railway Pioneer Regiment documents that I found. I think they are for him, although his middle name isn't stated. The address he gave on Discharge 8/6/1901 is the same address for his fathers (Richard Eddy) Admin in 1916. Pendeen Villa. His father died in 1896 (no Will). James Eddy 1846, his brother, always promised to look after the family (he didn't). This is why the 1915 death of a James Eddy interests me because an Admin then appears for my gggrandfather in 1916 made payable to his daughter Sarah Jane (Eddy)Parish...twenty years after his death. Poppy.
