Hi teesakiwi - our old friends the Quicks again!
Make that SIX children!
Matthew Quick and Sarah Major were married November 27th 1685 so it is a little confusing when you look at the baptism of Israel which was March 21st 1685.
What you need to remember is that these dates are Old Style (Julian Calender) which means that the
Year started on March 25th and not January 1st. So Israel was actually baptised 4 months AFTER the marriage.
The following baptisms can all be found in the Hoblyn Transcript and, where they survive, the BTs:-
Israel bp. 21st March 1685 Towednack
Francis bp. 13th November 1687 Towednack (also in Bishop's Transcripts)
Andrew bp. 20th October 1689 Towednack
Sarah bp. 14th January 1693 Towednack
Jane bp. 26th April 1696 Towednack (also in Bishop's Transcripts)
That, as you may well have noticed, is just FIVE children but ................
There was a sixth child whose baptism does not appear in Hoblyn and unfortunately there is no Bishop's Transcript for that particular year. This baptism also does not appear in IGI/FamilySearch:-
Isaac bp. 30th December 1691 Towednack
My source for this is noted as 'Towednack Parish Register' so I either saw the entry myself when I was in Cornwall or I have had someone else check. The early Towednack registers are quite poor and the handwriting difficult to read with entries out of order and sometimes squeezed in between lines. A number of entries can be found in the Bishop's Transcripts that do not appear in the Hoblyn Transcript.
Isaac Quick married Susanna Oates at Towednack 5th March 1716 and his first child was a son whom he named Matthew.
There was just one marriage for Sarah Quick and Robert Stone but it was not the daughter of Matthew.
I have not actually seen the Will of James Quick so I have to work from the Abstract you have quoted in your post. And an abstract is a transcript which means there is always the possibility of error!
Information in this abstract indicates that the Will was proved 20th February 1740/1. In fact the Will was
proved 20th February 1741/2 which was after James was buried.
The way the information from the Will is presented makes it appear that Sarah may not be a daughter of James. It 'looks like' James names his children (except for the executor) and then adds Sarah wife of Robert Stone but I believe it probable that she was another daughter.
Robert and Sarah Stone had at least five children:-
Susanna bp. 2nd February 1723 at Redruth
Sarah bp. 10th September 1727 at Illogan
Grace bp. 8th November 1730 at Illogan
Robert bp. 4th November 1733 at Illogan
Anne bp. 2nd January 1736 at Illogan
(all dates are Old Style)
Based on the names above I would think that Robert Stone was baptised at Redruth 28th October 1699 son of George Stone and Susanna Bramwell who married at Redruth 7th October 1782.
We do not have any baptismal information for children of James Quick except for sons James (1708) and Richard (1714) so it cannot be determined if the daughters were named in order of birth. But as Sarah married in 1722 she was probably born before 1705 and was therefore most likely one of the elder children.
This family was not the easiest to piece together and it was really only the abstract of that Will that made it possible. We had to contend with a number of things including the indifferent spelling of names and the lack of information recorded by the relevant Vicars. Also of hindrance was the state of the Zennor (and other) registers prior to 1713 and the fact that this particular Quick family seemed to move about a bit.
And that brings me to the point about Sarah Quick being married at Redruth!
It is just possible that James Quick was married twice but my conclusions are based on available information including the absence of potential marriage records. So here again is a copy of the information from the Will followed by some 'fleshing out'.
JAMES QUICK of Zennor, yeoman
written: 5 may 1731
proved: 20 Feb 1740/1
son: JAMES QUICK tent. of Bosenbben in Zennor
daughter: MARY w/o HENRY PEDNESPRASE of Sithney 1 sh.
daughter: PHILLIS w/o GEORGE THOMAS of Zennor, yeoman 4 pounds yearly
daughter: ELIZABETH w/o HENRY SCADDEN, gent. 1 sh.
SARAH w/o ROBERT STONE of Illogan, tinner 40 sh. yearly
son: RICHARD QUICK all the rest & executor
James ( ) Quick
witnesses: ALEXR. JAMES, FRANCIS STEPHENS
No wife was mentioned in this Will so it is presumed that she predeceased James and, as mentioned above, we do not know the order of birth for the children except for the two sons for whom we have baptisms.
James son of James Quick bp. 6th April 1708 Zennor (Bishop's Transcripts)
Richard son of James and Mary Quick bp. 10th March 1714 Zennor (Zennor Parish Register)
Richard is the last child of James baptised at Zennor and none have been found elsewhere so it is to be presumed that he was the youngest. And as the Zennor register from 1713 is quite legible then all other named children must have been born before the start of that year.
I cannot be precise with the order of the children but I have made an attempt based on the few known facts.
1. date of probable marriage
2. baptisms for the two sons
3. dates of marriage for the daughters
4. date of baptism for the last known child of each daughter
I work on a maximum age of 48 for women to have a child and I usually work on about 17 as the minimum age for girls to have married.
And after looking at the information again I suspect that all of the daughters may have been named in order except for Sarah. Elizabeth and Phillis were married in successive years so both were probably nearing their mid twenties. So .....................

As you can see the only member of this family who married 'at home' at Zennor was Phillis. The others married at Redruth, Falmouth, Gwinear, Lelant and St Ives!
Hope that helps a little.
