What I am hoping is that someone can clarify which Mary Thomas married, who sarah Davy parents are and any further illumoination available.
I know that in 1841 they, the family, lived at Foage's farm, Uny Lelant, except for Paul. ? he is with William Thomas in Nance Lelant as a male servant.
thanks in advance

Hello Elizabeth,
You write that Robert Roach married Jane Ninnes at Towednack on 21 Oct 1746 - I'm a bit confused as to Jane Ninnes being a daughter of Matthew Quick and Sarah Major who was surely called Jane Quick. I think that Jane Ninnes who married Robert Roach was a granddaughter of Matthew Quick and Sarah Major.
John Ninnes and Jane Quick (daughter of Matthew Quick and Sarah Major) who were married at Towednack on 29 April 1722 had a daughter Jane Ninnes who was baptised at Towednack on 18 Feb 1723 and I believe it was she who married Robert Roach at Towednack on 21 Oct 1746. Jane Roach was buried at Towednack on 4 May 1795 (Jane Roach, widow).
Regards,
Mary

Elizabeth - Mary has pointed out that Jane Ninnes was actually the grandaughter of Matthew Quick and Sarah Major which is correct. Information given to me many years ago suggested that Sarah was baptised at Gulval in 1767. Checking the records and this would be the daughter of Alexander as you show here. BUT - I have just done a little checking and I am now sure that she was NOT the daughter of Alexander Davy or Gulval. In 1851 Sarah was still alive and at Gwennap with her daughter Frances and her family. Frances daughter of Thomas and Sarah Roach married Robert Roach at Redruth 10th September 1823. Robert was born at Towednack and baptised there 22nd June 1795 son of Henry and Jane Roach. In this Census Sarah is age 88 and states that she was born at Redruth which means that she would be the following:- Sarah daughter of John and Frances Davy bp. 6th February 1763 Redruth This now gives the reason for Thomas and Sarah naming their daughter Frances and possibly gives some clue to why Robert and Frances may have been in the Redruth area later on. More to follow ...... Okay - the next part of this has taken quite a bit of time but I think I have managed to get somewhere! I believe there was only one marriage for Thomas Roach and that was to Mary Thomas of St Ives in 1817 at Towednack. In the 1841 Census there is a Thomas Roach (age 51) and wife Mary (age 52) living at Gwennap with daughter Mary age 20. Mary daughter of Thomas and Mary Roach of Illogan was baptised at Camborne in 1820. There appears to be only one possible marriage to account for this family and that is the 1819 Redruth marriage of Thomas Roach and Mary Michell. And although I am unable to find a baptism yet I believe it most likely that Mary Thomas was the daughter of Peter Thomas and Jane Curnow who married at St Ives 21st December 1797. At the moment (apart from Mary) I have only four children for Peter and Jane:- Peter bp. 26th January 1800 Towednack John bp. 21st March 1802 St Ives Thomas bp. 27th April 1811 St Ives William bp. 31st May 1816 St Ives There is certainly scope for more children but until I can find records of them I cannot be certain. However it is a little significant that in 1830 Thomas and Mary Roach named a daughter Jane Thomas Roach and then in 1844 named a son Peter Thomas Roach. Those names also suggest there was only the one marriage involved. The South Australian Biographical Index I know is not always correct and I think a lot of the information was collected in the days when far less material was available. In the case of Thomas Roach and his marriage I think there is an added problem. The marriage in 1819 to Mary Michell is easily locatable by simply searching IGI. On the other hand the Towednack marriages (except for perhaps an odd few extracted entries) are not so readily available and I suspect the Biographers did not have access to the information I have now. Based on what they were able to find I should think a then reasonable, but incorrect, assumption may have been made. And I think you will find there is no mention of eldest son Thomas in any of this material. That is about as well as I can do for you just now. CT

Hi CT,
Thanks for all that.
I started my research from scratch and thought that Mary Thomas was correct but kept running into people who suggest otherwise.
Eldest son Thomas is living with the family in Lelant in 1841 Census, aged 20, (love rounding.)
By 1851 he has married Elizabeth Bird and moved to Parcel Canol, Cardiganshire, Wales Registration district: Aberystwyth
Thomas died in SA in 1882 at Moonta. His wife Elizabeth Bird died in 1885 also at Moonta. they had 5 children:
Elizabeth 1845 Wales Thomas 1847 Wales Died in 1858 in Burra, SA, probable drowning. William 1849 Wales Mary 1852 Wales Sarah 1856 South Australia
Thomas and family had immigrated to Australia by 1856 but at present can't find a shipping record.
Back to Thomas Roach 1760 and Sarah (Davy) Roach , did she die in Jul 1852? The story among the family goes that Sarah stayed in England, when Thomas her son came to Australia. I have always been told that Thomas 1760, her husband came with his son Thomas 1793, in 1848. I can't find a burial record for Thomas 1760, either in Cornwall or in SA. Sarah apparently was not moving to the wilds at the other end of the earth.
Son Paul who I mentioned is my 3x great grandfather is missing from the family in Lelant in 1841. I have found one in Nance with a William Thomas age 40 which make his birth about 1801, too early to be Peter and Jane Thomas son of 1816, unless it is just coincidence that he is working for a Thomas.
Re Robert Roach and Jane Ninnes, my mistake, I do have it correctly in my tree. Thank you both
Thomas and Mary Roach and children came to Australia in 1848 on the Bussorah Merchant, came earlier than anticipated as a space became available with a family withdrawing. Traveled with the Ninnes family to Plymouth, then got a spot on the Bussorah Merchant direct to Adelaide, the Ninnes travelled on the Aromanche to Port Phillip.
On the Bussorah Merchant passenger list , Thomas 1817 is listed but no wife or children and I find him in Wales in 1851. I think this maybe Thomas 1760 not his grandson.

Elizabeth - I think I will work from your last point backwards. No - it is possible that Thomas came out to Australia with his parents and siblings and then returned to Wales before later bringing his own family out to Australia. I can tell you that the passenger was certainly not Thomas of 1760! Thomas Roach of Penderleath, age 72, was buried at Towednack 10th December 1732 In 1841 his widow Sarah was with her married daughter Sarah Curnow and her family at Newtown, Ludgvan. In 1851 Sarah was at Tresavean, Gwennap with daughter Frances and her husband Robert Roach as I mentioned in an earlier post. Although I cannot find a burial record for her I would think that Sarah is probably the Sarah Roach whose death is recorded in the July Qtr of 1852 Redruth R.D. Gwennap is in the Redruth Registration District and remember that she was living there the previous year with her daughter at which time she was 88 years old. I would think she may have died at Gwennap but is probably buried back at Towednack with Thomas. Paul Roach at nance in 1841 is almost certainly your 3xgt-grandfather. Thomas was not what I would call a rare name in the area so it may simply have been a coincidence that he was there. But there is the possibility that I have not correctly identified parents for his mother Mary. We need to keep that in mind given I have not found a baptism for her. CT

Thomas Roach was born in 1760 and his son Thomas in 1793. Have you suffered a typo and mean 1832 or is this a different Thomas. I had found Sarah in 1841 and 1851 Census so agree with that. Got to go, Easter duties and Anzac day as well. Will come back to this when I can Eliz

Sarah daughter of John and Frances Davy bp. 6th February 1763 Redruth
This now gives the reason for Thomas and Sarah naming their daughter Frances and possibly gives some clue to why Robert and Frances may have been in the Redruth area later on.
More to follow ......
Hi Ct, Have you had a chance to find anything else out about Sarah Davy.
I like the reasoning so far, but can't find anything else about her possible parents on the OPC site, other than below.
Are the parents John Davy and Frances Munday?

Robert Roach Marries Mary Edwards 1715 Gulval.
Children:
William 1717 marries Rebecca Osborne
Robert 1724 marries Jane Ninnes ( my direct line)
Margarrat 1720 marries Matthew Berryman (very little information on this couple)
Martha 1727 this is all I have
Is there any information available on either Robert Roach bp 1695 or Mary Edwards died 1767?
Also any help on the children welcome.

Unfortunately there is not much available for Redruth apart from IGI at the moment for that particular period which is why you cannot find anything on the OPC site. (There are later records available but they start around the 1880s I think.)
However IGI records that Sarah daughter of John and Frances Davy was baptised 6th February 1763 at Redruth.
John Davy married Frances Munday 4th June 1748 at Redruth.
That is as far as I have gone with this family so far.

Elizabeth - all I have on Mary Edwards at the moment is a suggestion that she may have been the daughter of William Edwards als Portear. I stress 'may have been' as I have not had the opportunity to do any research on her myself and I also do not have a death or burial recorded for her. I have also not yet attempted to trace the origins of Robert Roach so am unfamiliar with details of his birth/baptism. I guess I had better add Roach to the long list of families that I need to review. Matthew Berryman was baptised at Towednack 14th March 1724 son of Mark Berryman and Eleanor Eade. I have four children recorded for Matthew and Margaret:- Margaret bp. 24th November 1751 Madron Mary bp. 17th June 1753 Madron Matthew bp. 15th March 1758 Madron Jane bp. 20th July 1761 Gulval But that is as far as I have gone with that family.
