Hi to you all.
Can any one help with this?
In the 1911 census for Balnoon St Ives:
Philip Hosking age 45 Mara Hosking nee Uren age 42 have 3 children one is a adopted daughter called Margueretta Jane Hosking age 4
I can not find any more info on Margueretta any help would be great.
Philip Hosking had a sister called Zenobia Hosking but I can not find her after 1891 census.
Philip and Maria Hosking lived at Belnoon next door to their daughter Florence Martin and son in law James Penberthy Martin.
Regards George

Hi George I don't know if this will help at all, I can find on FreeBMD searching under Cornwall a birth registered in 1906 in December Quarter in Liskeard for a Marguerite Jane Underhill There is also a birth registered in 1907 in December Quarter in Scilly for a Marguerite Pender? I can find a marriage registered in 1898 in Mansfield for December Quarter for a Zenobia Hosking There are two choices for a spouse Charles William Carrington or William James Pemberthy If you check the 1901 census you should be able to see who she married Sarch

I found the same marriage as Sarch - William Pemberthy seems more likely being a Cornish name but I cant find them in 1901. There is also a Margaretta Jane Brooking b 1907 (reg Penzance 5c, 201) and a death in 1990 for a Margaretta Jane Curnow b 23 Apr 1907. (M J Brookling m William T Curnow Sep 1926 reg Pz 5c 465)
There were Brookings in St Ives and Halsetown so this may be the one you are looking for - need to find a connection with Philip Hosking.

One of this family living Stennack St Ives in 1901 could have been the father/mother of Margaretta Jane. William Brooking 48 Margaretta Brooking 41 William Brooking 20 Benjamin Brooking 19 Ernest Brooking 17 Margaretta Brooking 16 Cecilia Brooking 14 Amelia Brooking 10 Edith Brooking 8 Elizabeth Brooking 5 Israel Brooking 4 Robert Brooking 11 Months
Are you thinking that Florence May Hosking, Philip's daughter could have been her mother? I note she married in 1908.

Time for the interested party to purchase a birth certificate for Margaretta Jane?

How about this from FreeBMD -
Deaths Jun 1936
PENBERTHY Zenobia 65 Wortley Registration District Volume 9c Page 319
I cannot find her in 1901 and the Index to 1911 shows no sign of her at the moment.

that gives a birth date of abt 1871 which ties in with the Zenobia found in 1891.

Sorry Londoner but the plot just Unthickened! First things being first - Benjamin Hosking, brother of Philip, was born in 1844 at Lelant and so would have been just 16 when Margaretta was born in 1860. Margaretta was the daughter of Benjamin and Amelia (nee Rowe) Hosking/Hocking who married at St Just 28th March 1846. The OPC marriage record shows the name as HOSKING but thereafter it seems they are recorded as HOCKING. Secondly - the marriage record shows Benjamin as son of JOHN Hosking whereas Philip's father was Thomas. Last point - there is no pre-requesite for a connection between the Brooking and Hosking families for daughter Margaretta Jane to have been adopted by the Hosking family. CT

A little addition to my last which shows there is a little problem somewhere! FreeBMD shows that Benjamin HOCKING married Amelia Rowe in 1846. I would need to see the original register to be certain but the fact it is registered as Hocking is suggestive. Experience of trying to transcribe these names tells me that the name was an 'either/or' when the transcriber was trying to determine what it was. CT

I knew you would sort it out if I jumped to conclusions but at least that is one option not needed to pursue further.

Eliminating options is always helpful. But I am also wondering about that term 'adopted daughter' and I really wonder if Margaretta was actually adopted or if perhaps she was merely left in the care of the Hoskings for a time. Between 1890 and 1907 there are six Brooking marriages in the Penzance R.D. of which only three are males - George, William Henry and Benjamin Hocking Brooking. I would suggest that Margaretta Jane was most likely the daughter of Benjamin Hocking Brooking who married either Amelia Odgers or Alma Thomas in 1904. The logic is that Benjamin's mother was Margaretta. It might be interesting (and useful) to find out what happened to Benjamin and his wife to see if that provides any clues. CT

Dredging up an old thread that hasn't been satisfactorily sorted.
Benjamin Hocking BROOKING born 16 OCT 1881 emigrated to the USA in Jun - Jul 1907 headed to Bisbee, Arizona on the ship St. Paul. He was listed as a tin smelter and seems to have been traveling with a friend Henry ROWE of Phillack, husband of Salome CLEMENCE. Benjamin mentions his wife Amelia living at St. Erth. The two lads were going to stay with a Frederick ODGERS.I believe Frederick ODGERS to be Amelia's brother born 9 Apr 1878.
Amelia born 30 MAR 1882 joined him in Arizona in 1909, travelling with son William George Hockin Brooking who was born 26 DEC 1904 in St. Erth, he was bap 12 APR 1905 at St. Erth.
The couple had a son Benjamin Hocking BROOKING born 2 JUN 1910 in Bisbee, Arizona.
Afterwards the couple moved to Perth Amboy, New Jersey and later to Massachusetts. Benjamin died Malden, Massachusetts on 29 AUG 1955, his wife Amelia died 23 MAY 1960 also at Malden. They are buried at Forest Dale Cemetery.
So it is possible that Margaretta Jane may be this couple's child, or it might be an base child of Florence HOSKING. For that matter there were two other BROOKING lads, William Hocking BROOKING & Ernest George Hocking BROOKING that could also have been the father.
I guess I am going to need to buy a birth certificate and or marriage certificate.
