Amazon has just put out a free Kindle reader for pcs. I have loaded this and it works very well. There are numerous out of copyright books (classics)free on the site and it will also accomodate items that you can download from the internet archive site. For example the First book of Madron Parish Records etc. Very easy to read. Roy

OOooooohhhh I might have to go and investigate that Roy. Thanks for letting us know about this. I've seen all the recent publicity eg TV ads for kindle for the phones, but didn't know it was available for the PC.

I've actually had a copy of Kindle for several months although I cannot remember exactly where I downloaded it from. Hmm - checking the pathname for the application and it appears obvious I got it from Amazon. Checking Properties tells me that I downloaded it on November 4th 2010 so it has been available for a little while. CT

What would be the advantage of using the kindle reader in place of the other ways of downloading and displaying on-line books e.g PDFs? I'm always keen to try something new but only if it's really useful - the hard drive on my ancient and overburdened PC is already creaking with little-used applications!

I'm not really sure that I can see the point of the application to be honest! In fact I have been thinking about just deleting it because it is annoying me sitting there doing nothing. I only downloaded and installed it because something I was trying to look at seemed to require it. But then that particular item proved useless and Kindle just sits there like the proverbial stale bottle. Generally speaking if there is a book that I want and it is available then I simply download the PDF and use Acrobat to read it. Let's face it - Acrobat gets a lot more use then something like Kindle as far as I am concerned. BESIDES - we have Fire Restrictions on here at the moment and it is not legal to Kindle anything without a written permit! ;D CT

It just seemed another implement to help toread documents and has a good search facility. Also some of the archived books available on the internet cannot be downloaded as pdfs but will download as Kindle. Roy

Thanks for that. I haven't come across yet a book which could only be read with the Kindle reader but when I do I'll remember Roy's tip.
