I am looking for information about my 5th great-grandfather, Thomas Trewhela of Crowan. I believe he was born around 1740 and died in 1824. He was a blacksmith by profession. I hope to find information on his parents and siblings.
The Thomas I am researching married Martha Blewitt, born in Gwithian. Their children were: Hester, Margaret, Martha, John, Jane, Benjamin, Anne and Thomas. I am a descendant of Anne Trewhela (1781-?), wife of William Harvey of Gwinear.
Thank you.

Zibetha - this will have to be a brief reply but we will have plenty to discuss later I should think. I have never been able to find a baptism for Thomas Trewhela however I am as sure as I can possibly be of his parents. Throughout the registers the name was spelt ini a number of interesting ways but I will keep it as 'Trewhela' here. I believe Thomas was a son of John Trewhela from his second marriage to Margaret Parsons. I have also been unable to find a baptism for John but other records tell me that he was a son of Charles Trewhela and Margery Luke who married at Camborne 5th June 1686. John was first married to Mary Williams at Camborne 19th November 1715 and had seven (possibly eight) children. Some time between 1720 and 1725 the family moved to Kenwyn and Mary died there in 1732. On July 27th 1739 John married Margaret Parsons at Lanteglos by Camelford and their daughter Hester was baptised at Kenwyn 19th April 1742. It is Hester who provides the link for Thomas to this family. John Trewhela left a Will which was proved in 1753 and in that Will he named his son Thomas to look after 'his sister Hester'. The names of the children of Thomas and Martha also support this conclusion. In order of birth they were:- Thomas - named for Thomas himself Martha - named for her mother HESTER - most likely after Thomas' sister Margaret - undoubtedly after Thomas' mother John - likewise named for Thomas' father Jane Blewitt - possibly named after a sister of Martha Benedict - I think he was named after Martha's youngest brother Anne - this was the name of Martha's mother Edward - Martha's father Unfortunately I am stuck with the parents of Charles Trewhela although I do have one or two theories I have been working on for several years. You will find more of interest in this branch of the Trewhela families. William, an elder brother of Thomas, was married three times and had nineteen children. William was the ancestor of the family of John Trewheellar who went to Russia around 1818 and also of a Trewhela family that went to South Africa around the 1880s. I will be looking forward to hearing more of your Harvey family. CT

I'm attaching information on the link between the Trewhela and Harvey families and they branched into the Upper Midwest of America. I'm aware of nearly 300 descendents of Anne Trewhela and William Harvey and know there are more. The profile of their grandson, Edward, is from a 2-Volume book in the public domain which can be found on googlebooks.com or through the University of Michigan online library. The family information is what helped me do my tree, with the exception that it took me years to tranlsate "Trehwilla" into anything that got search results. Zibetha Attachments:

Thankyou Zibetha - I have downloaded these files to add to the Trewhela collection. I have briefly read the biographical sketch of Edward Harvey and I think it is rather fortuitous that you posted this just now. KFCampbell has just joined us on this Forum and it would seem that she and yourself might just be distant cousins! Part of her initial query is about her ancestors Henry SEMMENS and Mary BARTLE whose daughter Mary married Edward HARVEY. CT

Hi there, I have attached a copy of the information inside an old family bible of ours, long since rotted away. There is a man named Thomas Tronhola (sic) mentioned on this. This surname is most likely Trewhela - a lot of the spellings are incorrect. I presume this is the same man from Crowan? My Cory family lived there from about 1751 onwards but I do not know any connection with this Thomas Trewhela. Attachments:

Thomas,
I am delighted to see your contribution and my initial thread revived. As of yet, the Curry/Corey connections I have found relate to my Semmons line, but I am certainly intrigued by what you have posted.
Hopefully CT will jump in here!

Thankyou Thomas - a most welcome and interesting addition to the thread. Not easy to find some of these for a couple of reasons. Firstly the name can be found as Cory, Corry, Curry and probably other variations and secondly because of the condition of the Crowan Registers. Up to 1743 in particular much of the Crowan registers are largely illegible and from 1743 to about the 1770s it cah be 'touch and go'. I eventually found the 1752 baptism of Henry Corry but the surname was barely legible and the day of baptism even more difficult to read. This entry does not appear in IGI. The other problem I have with this family is with the children of Henry and Anne born from 1782 to 1799. When Thomas Cory married Mary Trewhela in 1816 one of the witnesses was a William Cory. As we know that Thomas was son of Henry it might be reasonably assumed that William was a brother yet no baptism is recorded for a son named William to Henry and Ann. What I find interesting in the extracts you have provided is the record of "Wm. Corey was born in March 29 1787" I can find no such record in the Crowan Register or in IGI/FamilySearch. BUT there is another curious entry about which I now begin to wonder ........ Anne daughter of Henry Corry and Mary his wife born 22 Feby and baptd. March 18 (1787) There can be little doubt this must be the same family but with the mother's name incorrectly entered as Mary and it clearly shows 'Anne daughter of ...' in the register. It would be logical to expect a daughter to be named Anne but I wonder now if this may be yet another error and perhaps the child should be 'William son of ...' The entry immediately above this is for 'Anne & George son and daur of Richd. Williams .....' and it would not be the first time I have seen a name transposed in such a way. And there was also 'Hanah' baptised to Henry and Anne Cory in 1793. More work to be done on this as I have time. CT

Well, this has certainly had me scrambling through my workbooks. Is the Mary Trewhela who married Thomas Cory Anne Trewhela Harvey's niece, daughter of John Trewhela and Mary Holman?
Thomas James, I think I am more directly related to you through the Bartle family. My 5x greatgrandfather, Ralph Bartle, would have been a cousin to the William Bartle who married Grace Ralph, and I believe their daughter, Grace, was the wife of William Cory whom I had as born about 1789--- a matcth to your William of 1787?

Hi Zibetha - yes, Mary Trewhela, wife of Thomas Cory, was the eldest child of John and Mary (nee Holman) Trewhela. BTW - I forgot to mention in my last that I am not quite sure about the mention of Thomas Trewhela in the Bible Extracts provided by Thomas James. For example - the word 'Wring' has me stumped. I should think it is probably a 'best can do' transcription of whatever was on the page but I can't work out what it might be. And the date of 1759 is also puzzling. Thomas Trewhela and Martha Blewett were not married until 1763 but then we cannot know for sure if this was the Thomas Trewhela involved. I think it would be nice to be able to have a look at whatever was on those pages and use some of today's technology to try and understand them more. CT

RE: the 1841 census image where Mary Rodda is at home with parents Thomas & Ann Harvey (from Wm Harvey Sr. thread)-- isn't the family of William and Grace Currey listed just before them at Bosparva the same group of people in the lower section of Thomas James' contribution of Cory Family Bible entries: Grace Cory and her children with the exception of Hannah who would have been 20?
