My ancestor William Williams born 1824 Ludgvan and his wife Jane Trevethan and children emigrated to Victoria, Australia between 1854 and 1860. I have just started researching ancestors of the Williams and Trevethans and came across this site

Welcome to Penwith Genealogy along with best wishes for Christmas and New Year. And what an unusual name you have to research! But as he is from Ludgvan I am sure we will be able to help at least a little. CT

Welcome to PG from me also. I know of your Williams family in Victoria Australia. They had a few more children after their arrival here. I came across your family while doing some LANYON research and should have some more info somewhere. Going from memory the daughter Jane Sophia married a LANYON, but I expect you have all these details. All the best for the New Year 2011 and good luck with your research. Roy - from down under.

Possible parents of Jane Trevethan from the 1841 census Philip Trevethan born 1801 Jane born17.1.1826 Phillip born 1828 Mary born 1830 This family were living at Chacewater, Kenwyn Father Philip married Jane Barbery 21.5.1825. There are two deaths for a Jane Trevethan that I have found 1. 3.10.1835 Chacewater age 33 2.6.10.1835 Chacewater age 35.
Another Trevethan family to which Jane could have belonged is: From the 1841 census Hanna Trevethan born 1791 Mary born 1819 Henry born 1821 Maria born 1823 Jane born 20.3.1825/6 Again this family were lving at Chacewater, Kenwyn Mother Hanna Sandoe married Abraham Trevethan 6.2.1808 Kenwyn. A burial for a Abraham Trevethan and the nearest I can find was 6.3.1822 in Kenwyn. Abraham was 66 and this death was before the birth of Maria and Jane if this is the correct Abraham who married Hannah!!
I've looked for the name Andrew in both families but unable to find it in the Trevethan side of the line. Probably comes from the Williams.
Hope this helps you.

As we are dealing with the Williams family of Ludgvan I thought it appropriate to move this conversation to the Parish page. Right - I have done quite a bit of work this afternoon and tonight and now have a good idea of the family. It certainly helped that I had William's family already in my database. The marriage details as supplied by Lamorna are correct but I am yet to get access to the additional details. At least we know where to look. The marriage may have taken place at Liskeard Church or Menheniot Church as that is where the first two children were born according to the 1851 Census. Jane Trevethan daughter of Abraham and Hannah Trevethan was baptised at Kenwyn 20th March 1826 at which time the family was living at Chacewater. (OPC site) Abraham Trevethan married Hannah Sandoe 6th February 1808 at Kenwyn. William Williams was born at Ludgvan 19th December 1823 and was baptised at Ludgvan 25th January 1824 son of Zacharias and Ann Williams. When I was searching the Victorian Indexes I noted that Wm Taylor Williams was recorded as the father of at least two of the children when they died. Zachary Williams married Ann Taylor 7th June 1813 at Ludgvan (witnesses were Hannibal Curnow and Philip Taylor) William was the seventh of twelve children to Zacharias and Ann and amongst his siblings were the now familiar names of Jane Sophia and Andrew. From earlier research I determined that Zacharias Williams was baptised at Ludgvan 15th October 1781 son of Zacharias and Mary Williams (nee Johns) who married at Ludgvan 26th December 1772. The name Zacharias was quite common in the Williams family at Ludgvan and it gets a little difficult to sort them out. That is a project I am still to complete but I do have an interest due to the marriage of Zacharias Williams and Bridget Trewheela at Ludgvan in 1770. I also have a little on Ann Taylor, mother of William Williams. Ann daughter of Richard and Jane Taylor baptised 6th February 1791 at Ludgvan Richard Taylor, husbandman, married Jane Harvey 5th August 1773 at Ludgvan Ann was the eleventh of fourteen children to Richard and Ann Taylor! That's my little offering for now. CT PS - I would be interested in some more information on William LANYON who married Jane Sophia Williams in Victoria in 1867.

According to my search notes the WILLIAMS family arrived in Victoria Australia on the Dover Castle in March 1861. Recorded as: Jane WILLIAMS - 36 years. Jane Sophia WILLIAMS - 11 years. Andrew WILLIAMS - 10 years. William WILLIAMS - 8 years. Elizabeth A WILLIAMS - 6 years. The father (William) was not recorded and I expect he came out ahead of the family to find living quarters and employment. You mentioned the family arrived between 1854 and 1860 and hope this will be of some help to you. Roy - from down under.

Finding William might be like searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack. In the PRO Passenger lists for the years 1853-1861 there are 63 Wm Williams and another 40 William Williams to be checked. Some Of the second group there is one possibility based on age calculations:- William Williams age 30 Arrived January 1854 Ship - MERLIN Fiche 060 Page 003 (Born about 1823) There are five other Williams men on that voyage. Of those there are two named John, an Edward, an Elisha and a Paul. John is the only name that is directly connected to William's family but neither of the two was the right age to have been his brother. But this may mean nothing given that Williams was not what I would consider a 'rare' name and it was certainly not restricted to any one area of Cornwall! Of the 63 Wm Williams:- Wm Williams age 23 Arrived August 1857 Ship - TITAN Fiche 130 Page 008 (Born about 1824) Wm Williams age 24 Arrived August 1857 Ship - SAML LOCKE (Born about 1823) Wm Williams age 23 Arrived July 1857 Ship - BLANCHE MOORE (Born about 1824) Wm Williams age 31 Arrived August 1854 Ship - CARPENTARIA (Born about 1823) Wm Williams age 30 Arrived May 1853 Ship - ELIZA (Born about 1822/23) Wm Williams age 30 Arrived April 1853 Ship - WEE TOTTIE (Born about 1822/23) That seems to be all except for one about the right age who arrived in 1853 from New Zealand. Now we need to make some calculations! Daughter Elizabeth Ann was born in the September Qtr of 1853 and she is the last known child to this family prior to the birth of Stephen in Victoria in 1862. We now know (thanks Roy) that Jane and the elder children arrived in 1861 and there is no evidence of any other children UNLESS one or more died on the voyage from England. However we have to work on the basis that William may have left around the time of (or soon after) the birth of Elizabeth Ann in 1853 and was certainly in Victoria prior to the family's arrival in 1861. With Jane and the children arriving in March 1861 I think we can certainly rule out 1861 and probably most of 1860 for William's arrival given the time required for correspondence between William and the family to establish details for them to join him. We can probably also class the last two arrivals listed for 1853 as 'unlikely' which leaves five possibilities. And given there is no evidence of any other children between 1853 and 1862 I would suggest we might also disregard the three arrivals in 1857. Between 1849 and 1853 there were four children and then another three from 1862-1865 which suggests that there would have been at least one or two more had William not left England until 1857. So that leaves us with two possibilities. William Williams age 30 Arrived January 1854 Ship - MERLIN Fiche 060 Page 003 (Born about 1823) Wm Williams age 31 Arrived August 1854 Ship - CARPENTARIA (Born about 1823) If we assume that William gave his correct age then I definitely favour the voyage out on the MERLIN in January 1854 as he would have turned 30 the previous month. Absolutely no guarantees on this but it is the best I can find for now. You could purchase William's Death Certificate which I think for that time has a column for 'length of time in the Australian Colonies stating which'. But even that might only give you an approximate time of arrival. CT

Yep- by my reckoning the William Williams here (m. Jane Trevethan) was a brother to your John Williams. The Zacharias Williams get a little tricky as well as it was a fairly common name in the family around Ludgvan. But I think most of them can probably be sorted out with a bit of work. CT

Hi all I've just joined this site and have a few queries on Williams myself. My family is from Zacharias and Anne thru their son Richard Taylor born 1816. I have Zacharias being born on 11/9/1790 and bap. on 28/9/1790 is this not correct? 1841 census has his age as 50. My ties are Williams/Troon/Vellenoweth with conflicting info. in all trees. Thanks hope you can help. Cheers Julie

Welcome to the site Julie. I am not sure what Census Transcript you have been looking at but if it has Zacharias as age 50 in 1841 then it is most certainly incorrect. Ancestry shows his age as 59 and looking at the image of the original page shows that 59 is correct. Zacharias was therefore born around 1781/2 which makes him the son of Zacharias and Mary (nee Johns) baptised 15th October 1781 at Ludgvan. CT

Guess what folks? ................................... I AM WRONG! ;D After posting my last I decided to try and sort out some of the Zacharias Williams of Ludgvan a little better in order to make things easier in future. That has not quite worked! However, in looking for a burial for the husband of Ann Taylor I worked out that the only one possible was that of 15th February 1742 at Ludgvan for Zachariah Williams of Newtown age 52. I checked the 1851 Census and found Ann as a widow still living at Newtown with some of her children so I went back to 1841 again and .................... Ancestry have his age transcribed as 59 and I looked at it several times again and still agreed that it was 59. But then I thought a bit more (OUCH!) and looked even closer and then compared the entry with other parts of the page. Well burn me and butter me on both sides if there is not the very slightest of gaps between the '0' and the downstroke. And looking further down the page it now becomes clear that the downstroke is, in fact, a TICK! So Zachariah was actually recorded as age 50 in the 1841 Census and not 59 and it means that he was born around 1790. Question is now whether or not he was the son of James and Temperance baptised 26th September 1790 at Ludgvan. CT

after going through a well, different time with personal stuff, i'm starting to want to get back in this. i have found some relatives that are from cornwall and now in australia recently but re-reading thru this, probably nothing to do with it.....however in an ironic twist of fate, my husband's job is taking him to australia for several years. i however am not going to be able to join him as he will not be allowed to be in the local small town of onslow, as he will be having to stay where the company deems fit....on the other hand i will have the chance to go stay summers hopefully with him and it would be a blast to be able to find *albeit* distance branches off the huge williams family tree (hopefully not broken branches , i reserve those for my immediate family!!j/k) anyway with this coming up soon enough, if there is any possilbe UK/AUS links here to ludgvan williams, please get in touch so we can figure it all out!!
