Just as we thought you might be getting over it another one, no two strike! Best wishes to all in Christchurch.

Yep here we go again. Last time we straightened poles up for weeks and it appears as if most of them have stayed there, although there is a lot of remedial work required on the poles, particularly on the conductors. One of the big issues again is broken services in the ground - last time (February) over 700 underground high voltage cable joints (approx $7,000 per joint to repair) - probably not as many this time but they are significant. Same with sewer and water. Normal streets are now rivers of water and sewerage.
But for many it is the silt from the liquefaction. My friend removed 200 tons off his standard house section in February - now he has another 150 tons to move. That is an awful lot of wheelbarrow work to get it onto the truck.
56,000 people without power on Monday. Still 2,000 now on Wednesday and at night it is freezing - some oldies are really struggling with that.
On Monday I was driving home from Akaroa when the 6.3 struck. I could not hang onto the front of my car and had to pull over thinking at first that I had a puncture in the front tyre. When I looked at the power lines swaying I reminded myself that I was an idiot and carried on driving. ;D After all I should have known given that the first one was just over an hour before that.
Some of Christchurch is long past ever being rebuilt on. Some of the places I grew up in will become very large parks. It will be a different city, some say better, but who knows.
181 died last time, only one this time. 60 more buildings to be demolished after Monday's effort. Those people living in that city are to be commended for their resilience.
As you can imagine my genealogy studies are on hold for a few weeks.

Lannanta - I caught a little on the News last night but didn't realise it was quite so bad again. Keep going mate and keep up your good work - it's what you do well! As you get the opportunity just poke your head in and say g'day but other wise we will hear from you when things have settled again. CT
