Hi everyone! Can anyone help me with advice on how to look for a death certificate I have been trying to find for some time. I knew Mary Glasson, who married Francis Polkinghorne Pascoe, died in 1851. It has always been a bit tricky with the Polkinghorne Pascoes because sometimes Pascoe is declared the surname and sometimes it is Polkinghorne. But I exhausted all the possibilities some time ago and could just not find Mary. However quite recently I was delighted to come across this snippet in local newspaper: From the West Briton newspaper, dated 26 April 1851, Friday: "At Montpelier, in the South of France, on the 6th inst., Mary, wife of Francis Polkinghorne PASCOE, Esq., of Trewhiddle, St. Austell, aged 28 years." So, the mystery was solved or so I thought. I tried ordering an overseas death certificate from the General Register Office using all the information I had, and again nothing came up. Can anyone suggest where I can go from here? Thanks in advance, Carole

Carole: This may be a "red herring". Try Ancestry Member Trees "kfdawson". There could be a "match". (Ask the Treeholder where the detail comes from) Also: Death may have been reg; in Cornwall.April-June 1851 vol.9 p57, Falmouth. David.

There is certainly a Mary Pascoe death registered as David says. And the first of the Trees on Ancestry that I have looked at quotes the same Death Registration but no other details. I would be wary of that as it appears to be a 'fit the scenario' match. However the snippet you found in the West Briton certainly suggests that this person is correct. (Same tree as mentioned by David) I guess you are aware of an entry for Francis Polkinghorne Pascoe in Wikipedia? I just noticed that the article is produced as an attachment to the kfdawson Tree. It certainly looks possible that the death was registered in England. CT

I'm sure that info will come in useful. As for the certificate you mention, I had sent off for it some time ago. I had high hopes but unfortunately that Mary Pascoe was a 23 year old spinster from Constantine. But thanks for finding the tree and I will ask kfdawson if they know anymore. Thanks for replying! Best wishes, Carole

Your 'fit the scenario' feeling is likely to be correct. Thanks anyway and any further thoughts would be welcome. Yes, Francis Polkinghorne Pascoe was quite a celebrity of his time. He was president of the Entomological Society (Darwin only made vice president - LOL) and the society were really helpful in sending me a biography of him and some photos. He and Darwin worked closely together and many of his specimens are in the Natural History Museum. All of this was only possible because of the Glasson money he had inheritated. My research also makes me believe that much of the Glasson money ended up with his daughter, Flora Polkinghorne Pascoe, who in turn left it to the church. Lots to discover yet though. Thanks again, CT. Best wishes, Carole

Although I have spent a lot of time looking into his life and works I didn't have a date for his baptism until now, so I am very grateful to you. Yes, this Francis James Polkinghorne Pascoe has had me confused and I have been meaning to research it some more. Not sure if Henry and William are brothers, or maybe Kitty and Eliza are sisters - then again the Polkinghorne Pascoe thing might just be a coincidence. I'll look into it tomorrow. Thanks again! Carole

According to another 'Ancestry Tree' Francis James Polkinghorne Pascoe married Margaret Maria Husbands 24th December 1848 at Middlesex, UK. I have confirmed that Francis married Maria Husbands so I don't know whether she was born as Margaret Maria. However, I am sending a copy of the PR entry to you Carole. CT

In 1851 F J P Pascoe and Maria bap 1831 Bishops Gate, Middx
were living with a George Dickinson and family at 5 Albert Place,
St Dunstans Stepney. Tower Hamlets.
F J P and Maria had a son F Adolphus who was born 1850
Walworth, Surrey.
Sorry to have strayed again away from West Penwith.
Can you clarify if this is ok or should I be starting off another thread?
