Sorry, CT, I misunderstood the 'other couple' reference. And yes I was refering to John & Susanna both times when I said I couldn't find a marriage. I haven't been drinking yet, honest I admire your tenacity with the Eddys. Most people (including me!) would have walked away from tackling such an arduous task. As for missing baptism records, if you give me a clutch of names and dates, I could check the baptisms in the Records Office to see if the records do exist and haven't been trancribed yet, or are missing altogether. I suspect that the baptisms weren't recorded. I've noticed that the same thing happened around Devon and Somerset at around the same time period. It gives me the impression that the Church no longer thought it imperative to keep detailed records once Civil Registration of Birth, Marriages and Deaths became widespread. Anyhoo, best wishes for the New Year

That's okay Polly - sometimes when I 'get on a roll' things become a little hidden in the message. While your suggestion might have some merits I think I will have to pass because otherwise I would be here beyond next Christmas compiling a list of those I know were born in St Just but whose baptism records I cannot find! ;D But I think you will find all were actually Registered as there were fines imposed for failure to do so. And gradually the laws tightened up so that registration had to occur within a fairly short space of time or you had to start digging into the pockets for that long lost coin! No - this is a matter of Baptisms rather than Births. And I may stand corrected but I think it was monetarily beneficial for the Vicar to process as many baptisms as possible! There has to be another answer. As for 'tenacity' ... well my cousin in Cornwall gave me the nickname 'Cornish Terrier' so I guess she had a reason for it!

I am not sure this will help but: My g-g grandfather Peter Eddy, b. 1817 in St. Just, had a son who married my grandfather Matthew Furze's older sister. Some of their descendants still live there, Wm (Billy) passed away in 2000, but Percy Eddy is still in St. Just. Their sister Grace Furze Hewitt lives in AU. As a footnote, Peter's daughter Annie married my g-grandfather James Angwin. Some of g-grandmother Annie's (Eddy) cousins still live in South Dakota, USA.
