I have a book 'Cornish Immigrants to South Africa'written by Graham B Dickason which has a few Trewella surnames.
The places they were born were Truro and Gwinear.
There was also Ralph Trewehela a South African born son of a Cornishman. Ralph was a composer/musician.

Hi Genie - most interesting. Ralph Trewhela wrote 'So Long, Sarie' which I believe was the marching song of the South African Army. But I would appreciate any details you can find of the Trewhella (var.) people in this book as I have never seen a copy. I was in touch with Graham Dickasen some time back but that was for a specific query. Any and all details welcome. CT

I bought this book at great expense from South Africa sometime ago when I was searching online for an ancestor who was born in Cornwall but died in South Africa.
A couple of weeks of receiving the book I visited my local library and they had a copy on the shelf which I could have borrowed for nothing!
You mentioned Ralph Trewehelawriting a song well the book mentions an old timer Billy Matthews from Penzance ,who sang to the first South African radio audience from Stuttaford's Buildings in Johannesburg in 1924.

Thankyou Genie. I understand about the cost of the book. I searched around the Internet last night to see what I could find and Amazon.co.uk had a copy of this same book. Start price for the used copy - 50 Pounds! Some of these Trewhellas I know but the others I am still having trouble identifying. Will get there one of these days. Thanks again. CT
