I have a Stephen Russell baptised 1661.
Stephen's parents I have as Ralph Russell and Ebbet who married in St Buryan 5.2.1660.
Ebbet I believe was the daughter of John Leha. John was baptised 25.6.1626 Paul. Father of John was/could be Simon Leaha baptised 1604 Paul.
I've checked the OPC site and IGI but information on this family runs out about the 1604 mark!
I do have the Leah surname baptised Paul/St Buryan in the late 1700's/early 1800's and I am assuming this is the same family even though they are on another line in my tree.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has any information on the early Leaha/Lehas.
Thankyou
L

1641 Protestation Return entries for Penwith:
PAUL: Thomas LEEHA PERRANUTNOE: Richard RUSSELL ST.BURIAN: Nicholas RUSSELL, Thomas, George & Wm GWENNAP UNY LELANT: John LEAN (LEA-N-) SENNEN: Richard & Marten GWENNAP TOWEDNACK: Wm RUSSELL, Church Warden.
All other Penwith parishes - nil points!
I was expecting to find more LEAH's.

And the 1664 Hearth Tax returns for Penwith: ST.BURYAN: John LEHA 1; Ralph RUSSELL 1; George GWENNAP 1; Thomas GWENNAP 1. PENZANCE: Martin GWENNAP 3; James LEASE 4. TOWEDNACK: David PAYNTER 3 stopt up one & now John RUSSELL. All other parishes including PAUL nil
My interpretation of the Hearth tax entries is that the number is from 1662, and the notes from 1664. Therefore in 1662 David Paynter had a house with 3 hearths, but by 1664 it was occupied by John Russell, and one hearth had been blocked off.

Don't be confused by this one. LEAN(E) was a family in it's own right and can be found at Lelant from the earliest registers. I have probably about the same information available at the moment. But there is something nagging at my brain about the name LEHA. Although I cannot find it just now I seem to recall it referred to as an abode in a Will or other document at some point. Or it may have been in a BMD record. CT

Thanks Mike for the information.
Thanks CT, perhaps the nag in your brain will come to fruition soon. If it does please let me know.
Thanks Londoner, there was definetly a Simon baptised 1604. The information came from the CFHS.
