Looking for help on Samuel BETTENS bap. Crowan 28 Mar 1819 and who married Ann Maria HOCKIN Redruth District Jun 1843. There are two children I found on the Family Search Beta site, Jane Hockin bap Crowan 19 Dec 1843 and Samuel John bap Crowan 2 Feb 1845 - these two births seem to be indexed under BETTINS in FreeBMD. My problem is I can't find the family or any of its members in the 1851 Census or any subsequent census, at least as recorded in FreeCEN. Does anybody know where they got to?

Roger - a little bit of luck. Francis Hockin BETTENS born 25th May 1849 Adelaide, South Australia Father - Samuel BETTENS Mother - Anny Maria HOCKIN From South Australian Births 1842-1906. That is the only entry I can find for this family. There are a couple of other entries for the name but nothing to suggest a link. There is also a Samuel Bettens in Victoria who married in 1863 and had several children but again nothing to link them to the man in question. I can also find no record of the arrival in Australia but ............ There is one database for South Australia that has passenger lists for several hundred ships arriving in South Australia between 1846 and 1850. Unfortunately these are not yet available in indexed form so a 'one ship at a time' search would have to be made in the hope of finding Samuel and his family. But at least you now know that he was in Australia at least briefly. CT

Thanks, CT, that birth must link to the Samuel Bettens family since the names fit so neatly. I'll trawl though the passenger lists you indicate to see if the family is included.

Thank you very much for the link, CT - I was trying to find the lists elsewhere without success. I have started my trawl, so far without turning up the names. However I did google the name and came up with the following webpage galileo.spaceports.com/~goodsell/allfamily/b13.htm#P1805 . This seems to refer to the family although there is a slight inaccuracy in referring to Samuel's spouse as Ann Maria HAWKIN whereas I'm fairly certain she was a HOCKIN.

Roger - don't be too concerned about the Hockin/Hawken problem.
It is quite possible that Ann Maria was recorded as Hawken when she was baptised and you will find any number of instances where these names have been interchanged.
Another one where it is all in the pronunciation.

Like CT says, the spelling is not a significant stumbling block. HOCKEN/HOCKING/HAWKEN are interchangeable in the 18th and early to mid-19th centuries. And as far as I've ever heard the H is silent in all of them ( 'OCKEN as my friend John Berryman says).
