Time for another go at the Newtons of Canonstown. I'm looking for the marriage of Mary Newton, originally of Perranuthnoe and Canon's Town, who in March 1945 was in Nancledra with her daughter Christine, age ten, her husband's name and Christine's surname unknown. Mary Newton (father Robert Newton and mother Elizabeth Jane Date) was born December 1908, Perranuthnoe, Penzance 5c 200. I've found only one possible Christine i.e. Christine Harris b. Sept 1930, Stratton, Cornwall, mother - Newton, but have not found a Harris- Newton marriage. Any clues from the usual suspects would be appreciated. Isambard

There is this one:- FreeBMD Births 1935 March Qtr Nottingham R.D. BOSWORTH, Christine Mother's MN - NEWTON But I cannot find a matching marriage in FreeBMD which means either there is none OR the relevant records have not yet been indexed OR one or other surname was deemed indecipherable by the transcriber! Christine Bosworth would have been age 10 in 1945 so is a good match. But she was born in Nottingham which makes me a little more unsure. CT

Isambard Free BMD lists two other Harris children with mother "Newton" in Stratton: Elsie Harris June qtr 1928 Margaret Harris March qtr 1932. Mary and her nine siblings were born in the Hayle general area and a number of them continued to live there into the 1940's. Therefore I'm a bit doubtful that the three Harris - Newton births in the far north east of Cornwall are relevant. However Newton is not as common there and I've found a Hilda Newton marriage to a Edward C. Moore, December 1932 Stratton 5c 7, perhaps Robert's sister and Mary's aunt? Hilda Newton is not a common name in Cornwall. The search for Mary's marriage continues.

Searching through the currently indexed Marriage entries in FreeBMD and there appears to be only one that could be considered 'close to home'. 1934 June Qtr Plymouth R.D. William H BARRABALL Mary NEWTON Perhaps interestingly there is then this Birth:- 1936 December Qtr Richmond Y. R.D. Vol 9d Page 888 BARRABALL Evelyn C She would only have been 9 in 1945 but perhaps Christine was a second name? What caught my attention here is that the marriage was in Plymouth and then the birth up in Yorkshire which indicates some travelling. And that is the only birth in FreeBMD for a Barraball child where the mother's name was Newton. May be of some help. Also - William Henry BARRABALL - birth registered at Plymouth in 1903. CT

CT Grasping at clues where we can find them, Evelyn C Barraball's 1936 birth is interesting, allowing for spelling variations. Mary Newton had an aunt, Eveline May Newton, one of Robert Newton's siblings, living in Penzance in 1945.

Charles Clifford Newton, Mary's brother, married Muriel E. Harris in 1910 in Plymouth in 1938. He died in Birmingham in 1994.
