I'm a new member, I have a family tree starting with Matthew Thomas of Zennor, born in 1713, I am a direct decendant of Matthew.

Its to do with Hannibal who married Jane Quick, they had ten children, one of whom was Thomas (1808 -1885), one of his children was Nicholas (1851) of Leah, who then had eight children, one of whom was my grandfather, Frederick.

So you begin with Matthew Thomas who married Ann Roberts at Towednack 26th April 1740. Mary d/o Matthew and Ann married John Thomas at Zennor 8th June 1762 and their son Hannibal married Jane Quick. Matthew's parents were George Thomas and Jane Phillips who married at Zennor 27th April 1706. John Thomas (husband of Matthew's daughter Mary) was the son of Hannibal Thomas and Charity Stevens. You say that Hannibal and Jane (Quick) had ten children  yet I only have nine recorded.  We shall have to discuss that I think.  CT |

I've just returned from two weeks break in Portugal and have only just caught up with the recent correspondence regarding Matthew Thomas of Zennor.
I myself am also a direct descendant of Matthew's grandson Hannibal Thomas and his wife Jane Quick. I also have ten children recorded for the couple:
1. Jane Thomas bapt. Zennor 20 Nov 1796;
2. Mary Thomas born Zennor about 1798; buried Madron 19 June 1865; married Nicholas White at St. Levan 11 Feb 1823;
3. Elizabeth Thomas bapt. Zennor 6 Dec 1801; married Henry Harvey St. Levan 17 Dec 1826;
4. Hannibal Thomas bapt. Zennor 29 Oct 1804; married Nancy (aka Nana/Ann) Williams St. Levan 13 July 1825;
5. John Thomas (bapt. Zennor 27 Sept 1805; buried Zennor 30 Dec 1889; married Elizabeth Prowse St. Levan 22 June 1834;
6. Thomas Thomas (bapt. St. Levan 31 July 1808; buried Sancreed 24 Feb 1885; married Ann (Nancy) Barnicoat Tremewan St. Buryan 9 Jan 1833;
7. Ann (aka Nancy/Nanny) Thomas bapt. St. Levan 28 Oct 1810; buried Sancreed 1 Oct 1870; married William Rowe Sancreed 3 Nov 1838;
8. Catherine Thomas (my great-great-grandmother) bapt. St. Levan 18 Oct 1812; buried Madron 21 Mar 1894; married William Nicholls of Kerrow, Zennor at St. Levan 6 Feb 1836;
9. Charity Thomas bapt. St. Levan 20 Oct 1816; buried St. Levan 21 Nov 1869;
10. Hannah Thomas bapt. St. Levan 17 Oct 1819; died 1900; married John Nicholls of Kerrow, Zennor (younger brother of William Nicholls mentioned in 8. above) at Zennor 26 Sep 1840.

Mary is the one I do not have although she is in my database via her marriage ..... and that now leads to an obvious question. What information/evidence do you have to link Mary as a daughter to Hannibal and Jane? Based on events for which there are known records I would have thought there was a candidate:- Mary d/o Matthew Thomas bp. 31st July 1799 at Zennor I appreciate that Hannibal and Jane baptised there last three children at St Levan but .... Unfortunately, there appears to be no hard evidence such as a baptism record that Mary was the daughter of Hannibal and Jane Thomas. I obtained the information many years ago from the vast family tree of the descendants of Matthew Thomas and Ann Roberts, which I believe was drawn up by Gilbert Anderson (married to a Thomas descendant) who also wrote a book on the Thomas Family of Zennor in the early 20th century. Of course, he himself was not always correct, because on his tree he had John Thomas (1737) as a son of Matthew Thomas and Ann Roberts who married a Mary Thomas, when it became clear to me after having read the will of John Thomas that it was in fact his wife, Mary, who was the daughter of Matthew Thomas and Ann Roberts!
It is simply by association that I too believe that this Mary Thomas was a daughter of Hannibal and Jane Thomas. Mary was married at St. Levan to Nicholas White on 11 Feb 1823 with one of the named witnesses being Hannibal Thomas. I think that this Hannibal Thomas could have been her father (who at that time was still farming in St. Levan parish) or her brother Hannibal who also appears to have always resided in the St. Levan/St. Buryan area. Another indication is that in the 1851 census, the widow Mary White is living at Tremethick, Madron and is a neighbour of William Nicholls and his wife Catherine nee Thomas - a sister of Mary Thomas. Similarly, in the 1861 census Mary White is living at Boswarthen, Madron. Staying with her is a visitor Catherine Thomas, unmarried, 29, born St. Levan. I believe this was her niece Catherine Thomas, daughter of Mary's brother Hannibal Thomas and his wife Nancy. Their daughter Catherine Thomas was baptised 25 Mar 1832 at St. Levan. Therefore, there is a strong 'St. Levan' link regarding Mary White.
I too realise that Mary Thomas d/o Matthew Thomas baptised 31 July 1799 at Zennor could have been the Mary Thomas who married Nicholas White, but I ask myself as to why that Mary Thomas would have married at St. Levan and not Zennor with Hannibal Thomas (her late father's brother) or her first cousin Hannibal as a witness, when her mother Charity Thomas nee Christopher was probably still living at Zennor. In the case of the Zennor based Mary Thomas, following the death of her father Matthew in the mining accident of 1809, would it not have been more likely that one of her brothers William, Matthew and John would have been a witness at her marriage? In 1832 I belive that her brother William was still alive. I think that he was possibly the William Thomas who married Ann Richards at Morvah on 23 Mar 1832.
Finally, I think that it is extremely likely that Hannibal and Jane (Quick) Thomas would have named one of their early daughters Mary for Hannibal's mother Mary. Their first daughter was Jane (1796) and there was then a gap to Elizabeth (named for Jane Quick's mother Elizabeth Ninnis?) baptised 6 Dec 1801. So there was a gap of five years between their first two children. I think it extremely likely that there was a daughter Mary (named for Hannibal's mother) born in about 1798. Regarding the children of Nicholas and Mary (Thomas) White, they had a daughter Jane (1831) - also indicating that Jane was very likely named for Mary's mother Jane Thomas nee Quick. Had it been the other Zennor Mary Thomas who had married Nicholas White, surely it would have been more likely that one of their daughters would have been named Charity for Mary's mother Charity Christopher?
Nearly forgot to add . . . Hannibal Thomas and Jane nee Quick appear to have moved from Zennor to St. Levan between the baptism of John at Zennor on 27 Sep 1805 and Thomas who was baptised at St. Levan on 31 July 1808. All later children were baptised at St. Levan. According to records held by CRO, Hannibal was an Overseer of St. Levan parish. I believe that he farmed at Porthcurno - around the area where the Porthcurno Cable Station and Engineering College were based in more recent times. Hannibal and Jane later returned to live at Treen, Zennor (1841 census and 1851 census). Although buried at Zennor on 19 March 1853, Hannibal appears to have died at Madron where he must have been living following Jane's death and burial at Zennor on 12 Dec 1852. Daughter Catherine who married William Nicholls was living at Tremethick, Madron at this time, so maybe he went to live with them.

Having as I do a fondness for eliminating the opposition, who is Mary Thomas of Kerrow buried Zennor 25 March 1836 age 37?
I am not familiar with Kerrow, but I note there is a baptism of Matthew Philips Thomas 19 Jan 1840 at Zennor to John & Margery Thomas of Kerrow; 11 July 1841 of John to William & Nancy Christopher of Kerrow; 14 August 1842 of Thomas to Hannibal & Charity Thomas of Kerrow.....
I must return to my Thomas family, stuck back at 1730s in St Levan.......

With regard to Mary Thomas of Kerrow buried Zennor 25 March 1836 aged 37, this would have made her birthdate around 1799. Could it not be possible that this was Mary Thomas daughter of Matthew Thomas and Charity nee Christopher?
According to the chapter 'The Hamlet of Kerrow in Zennor' by Jean Nankervis which appears in 'West Cornwall Homes and Households', the Christophers were living at Kerrow in the 18th century. Richard and Henry Nicholls of Madron moved to farm at Kerrow in about 1801. Richard Nicholls married Elizabeth Christopher (1778-1860) daughter of Nicholas Christopher (1737-1811) and Charity Thomas who I believe was the daughter of Hannibal Thomas (Abt 1707-1787) and Charity Stephens. Richard and Elizabeth (Christopher) Nicholls farmed at Kerrow, Richard dying in 1851 and Elizabeth continuing to live at the farmhouse with her farmer son Henry till her death in 1860. Elizabeth Nicholls nee Christopher was a sister of Charity Christopher (1768-1835) who married Matthew Thomas (1766-1809) and the latter were the parents of Mary Thomas baptised Zennor 31 July 1799.
So therefore there is a link between this Mary Thomas and Kerrow. It is perfectly feasible that she was living at Kerrow - the home of her maternal aunt Elizabeth Nicholls nee Christopher - at the time of her death.

My great great grandfather was Nicholas White, son of Thomas, married Eliza Jane Ivey.

I myself saw the tree many years ago and made notes on the descedants which I still have in my possession today. Just to say that I have the extensive family tree and Mary definitely married Nicholas White of Bojewyan, they had two sons, and two daughters, Nicholas, William, Mary Ann & Jane. Their descendants are listed aswell.

On page 8, Gilbert John Anderson writes in a paragraph about HANNIBAL THOMAS born 1771: 'The old couple (i.e. Hannibal and his wife Jane Thomas nee Quick) returned to Zennor (i.e. from Rospletha, St. Levan where they had been farming since 1807), having then retired from farming. Hannibal's latter years were spent at Lower Poltair, Madron with his daughter MARY. He died in 1853 and is buried at Zennor'.G.J Anderson writes on page 10 in a paragraph about EMMA THOMAS (daughter of Hannibal's brother William Thomas who had 23 children by two wives both called Christiana) that in 1922, when the book was written, Emma was aged 89 and the only surviving child of William Thomas:
'she has kindly supplied much of the information contained in these notes respecting her branch of the family. It is a matter for wonder how many can say with her, "My father was born 146 years ago!"'From the above paragraphs, I think that we can be reasonably sure that as G.J. Anderson had information from living memory, he would have got the information about Hannibal Thomas having a daughter called MARY (who was Emma's first cousin) and with whom Hannibal was living when he died from Emma Thomas.
