Hi I am trying to find some information regarding Amey Courtney, wife of James Vingoe, who married on 11 May 1764 in Sennen. I'm looking for help with her birth/baptism and parents. Some sources gives the birth as c.1735 and others as c.1746, but no specifics. The Pritchard "Vingoe Tree" has the birth as abt. 1746, and even they don't list parents at all (which is unusual for them). I can't find her birth/baptism anywhere on The Cornwall OPC or West Penwith Resources. Any ideas? Alan

Hi Searcher.
I've had a look for you but I can't find much. It is frustrating when you get these "out" of the blue names but some you just have to resign yourself to! Have you tried looking for a will that might give some extra information to fill in the parish record gaps?
The Vingoes have been researching for 25 years or more and although I am sure they would be the first to admit they are not free from possible mistakes, if they haven't got any info it might be that there is none out there to be got!!!
One detail, I don't know if you've noticed it or not so apologies if you have, the OPC record of the marriage records Amey's being married with consent of parents. Was she rather "young"? I'm not sure what the rules were in 1767 but I would not go off that about 1747, i.e. 21 years before, date to readily. If it were with parental consent then I would suggest she were on the younger side of 1747 rather than the older. Of course, this is just speculation but little details like that. as CT always manages to spot!!!!!!!! Ha ha,- can make a big difference.
The only other Amey Courtney I can find in the West Penwith area was the Lady Amey Courtney who married Mr Fortescue in 1699 in St Buryan- might be worth having a look around St Buryan or even considering that our Miss Courtney was not from Sennen at all. There was a Thomas Courtney and Joan at Ladock, not too far, who were baptising children in the 1740's- added to which an unidentified child in 1742- but then that would be difficult to relate to the parental consent entry.
Can't help much more with this one but there may be a few pointers there for you.

After a brief look I cannot seem to find much at all for the Courtney family and the Penwith area this early.
As I said it has been a 'brief look' but at the moment it appears that the family is probably from elsewhere.
In the case of Amey's marriage I would be inclined to think that 'consent of parents' in this case means that she was 'a minor'.
This is the only marriage at Sennen for several years at least where the term is used.
At St Buryan there was a very long sequence of marriages where the terms 'consent of parents' or 'consent of friends' appeared in practically every marriage and this becomes misleading.
But there is another way to determine a possible birth year for Amey and that is by looking at her children.
From my records James and Amey Vingoe had 11 children from 1765 to 1792.
I work on the basis that age 48 is about the maximum for a woman to be having children, particularly in those days, and it usually works out fairly right in my experience.
Amey's last child was baptised in 1792 and with another child baptised in 1790 I should think that either 1791 or 1792 would be the year of birth for that last child.
That would place Amey's birth at no earlier than 1744.
The marriage occurred in May 1764 'with consent of parents' so if she were a minor (as it appears) then this also reflects a birth no earlier than about 1744.
Where we go from here I have no idea at the moment but I think we at least have a very reasonable starting point.
The best idea probably would be to look for baptisms, and possibly marriages, around the period of about 1730 to 1750 and see how geographically close there might be a group of Courtneys to the Sennen area.
That might possibly throw up some useful clues.

Hi Alan, looks like you have some useful pointers from Mal and Ian to consider. If Amy descends from THE Courtney we could be looking at her originating anywhere from Exeter to Scilly or beyond. I even found one branch in Virginia in the 1600's. Good luck, Mike

Hi searcher Amey is my 6th g grandmother. I have her birth year as 1747. No documents just family lore. I have that she married James Vingoe in 1764 when she was 17.and that they married in Sennen Cornwall. I have a DNA direct match to her and James.
