Sally - I don't know the origins of the abstract you have seen and in fact I could not recall having seen any form of that particular Will. However, after searching through the collections in my database I have found both an abstract and a complete transcript in which the residual legatees and executors are named as 'unto my said son JAMES STEVENS QUICK and my daughter MARGARET JANE PAYNTER'. Ah! - now that I look back at the previous post on this subject I see where the error lies. My abstract, and the transcript, is also from Quicksilver with details as noted above. It would appear that the copy posted in this thread was another 'transcript of the abstract' which shows how easily errors can be made and perpetuated! As for William Stevens Quick - well, there were actually three of that name. None were sons of Benedict but if you don't have their details then let me know and I will send what I have. CT

Sally - I have been checking my information on the the three William Stevens Quicks. Two are easy enough as they are father and son with the elder being baptised at St Ives 19th February 1830 son of James Quick and Ann Bottrell. The third bloke is a bit of a problem and, at least up until this very minute, I had no further information on him except for his baptism. That being the case I have decided to preempt any request and tell you all I can find out about him. William Stevens Quick was baptised at Towednack 24th May 1835 illegitimate son of Amy Quick. The baptism record states that the father was William Stevens, farmer. And until now that is all I knew of him. There is no burial for William in the Towednack records to 1837 and FreeBMD records just two entries for the name of which one was the marriage and the other the birth of the father and son mentioned above. A search of the 1841 Census showed that Amy Quick was still living at home with her parents, John and Elizabeth, and siblings but William was not with them so I searched for any William Quick of the right age with what appeared to be no success. I also checked for William Stevens of the right age but all could be accounted for. There was but one entry that was worth checking:- 1841 Penderleath, Towednack Peter CURNOW, 45, farmer Mary do., 33 Richard do., 9 Elizabeth Ann do., 7 John Quick do., 6 Peter do., 4 Mary Quick do., 1 Matthew do., 3 William H Quick, 7Mary Curnow was the sister of Amy Quick so William H Quick must be Amy's son and, therefore, enumerated incorrectly. I could not find William in 1851 and again could find no record in FreeBMD for his death. So I thought it worth while checking where his mother was in 1851 and came up with:- 1851 Chytodden, Towednack John QUICK, head, mar, 75, farmer of 40 acres, Towednack Elizabeth do., wife, mar, 70, Zennor Amy do., daur, unm, 40, Towednack Matthew do., son, unm, 32, Towednack Ann do., daur, unm, 28, Towednack William STEVENS, grandson, unm, 15, employed on the farm, TowednackThe reason I could not find him before is because the Ancestry Transcriber had transcribed the surname as HEVENOR!!! (I have submitted a correction) So we now know that William was still alive in 1851 albeit now known as STEVENS! I will see what more I can find and update this post as appropriate. CT

At the moment the only other possible sighting of William Quick/Stevens is in the 1861 Census. There is a Will. Stevens age 26 aboard the RN Ship 'Orion' of 91 guns moored at Corfu Roads. He is '2 Capt. of Fore Top' being, I suspect, one of the gun batteries. The only difficulty is with the birthplace which is recorded as - TEWKESBURY, CORNWALL. I have checked the original and that is what is written but Tewkesbury is in Gloucestershire!!!! If Tewkesbury is the error then this may well be Amy's son but until I can find another record for him we may never know. The only other information of use is that he was still unmarried in 1861. In case this is our William Stevens Quick then the following is of interest:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Orion_(1854)CT

Thanks Ian, I only have William Stevens the elder in my database (s/o James Quick and Ann Bottrell) I was more interested in the will transcription as I do not have that one and did not get the William... suspected it may have been a typo, but just wanted to check

The information in my previous is interesting but ............... it can now be ignored! I have just found William in the 1861 Census:- 1861 Bosuljack, Gulval John CHELEW, head, mar, 55, farmer of 55 acres of land Amy do., wife, mar, 50 William STEPHENS, son-in-law, unm, 26, son in law John Chelew of Ludgvan married Amy Quick 11th October 1852 at Towednack. Lannanta - my initial suspicions were also that it was most likely meant to be Vivian Stevens Quick but then I found my copy of the transcribed document which proved that it was in fact James Stevens Quick. Sally - Good that I have been able to provide the solution for you but also good that your query has me looking at William Stevens Quick again. Although Lannanta and I did a heckuva lot of work on these families there came a point where we decided we had the basic platform all correct so there were many we did not pursue beyond a certain point unless other factors warranted. Since that time other queries led me back to a number of these families and additional information added to the database. Now I intend to try and track the illegitimate William Stevens Quick as far as I can so that future difficulties might be avoided. And it also adds to that 'platform' we built. This has also resulted in at least another 3 corrections being submitted to Ancestry for transcription errors! CT

Hmmm - I am not sure what I wrote that you disagree with but there could have been a typo. What I have in my database is exactly what you say here. The one thing I now disagree on is that you claim James Veal to be the son of John and Thomasine! James son of John and Thomasine Veal was baptised at St Ives 6th April 1797 and I have nothing to indicate he was born much before that. If you check the 1851 Census you will find that James Veal was born at St Keverne and his age recorded at the Census indicate a birth around 1793. I think it more likely that he was the child of Charles and Jane Veale baptised at St Keverne 6th April 1795. CT

H Snap17 - certificates are always useful as I deal with so many families, thankyou.
For the Census records it all depends on whether you are willing to pay a subscription. I use Ancestry although I do have a lot of trouble with transcription errors which makes it difficult sometimes to find someone but overall it is very good. You can also take out a monthly subscription so you are not tied in to long contracts. FindMyPast also has the Census and some of our members use that but there are two three other sites available which do not have images of the orginal forms.
FreeCEN Cornwall Online Census Project FamilySearch
It is always best to try and see the originals as much as possible but these three are certainly useful.
