My great grandfather owned a ship called the "Nora Creina" and I am at present researching the history of it. I attach a photo of a painting of her leaving Waterford harbour being the first steamship to do so in the 1830s. She went between Bristol and Waterford and I know she went to Newfoundland. I am trying to establish whether she is the same ship of that name in Australia wrecked in 1858 and your post gives evidence that she might have made the trip. Where does your evidence come from? I could send you further details but attachments are limited to 1 megabyte and my notes come to about 4 MBs.

William does belong to the family but I have trawled the usual parish registers with no luck. Mary Ann was baptised 18 may 1836 St Ives and died sometime before 1841. I did look on Free Bdm sometime ago and there was no death recorded so I have always assumed until proven otherwise she died before she was 1

Hello fosterk and welcome to the site. But your first post has me somewhat confused. Firstly - I am not sure just which William you are talking about here. I presume it is a William Shugg but ...... And then we come to Mary Ann bp. 18th May 1836 at St Ives. My suspicion here is that you have a mix-up somewhere. There is no baptism at St Ives for a Mary Ann Shugg on that date but there is most certainly a burial. Mary Ann Shugg age 16 was buried at St Ives 18th May 1836 and a report in the West Briton states that she was the daughter of Samuel Shugg, mason. CT

Rowena - I believe, thanks to the latest posting by Amy, that the problem of Mary Ann Shugg has now been solved. The researcher who claims Mary Ann as a daughter of William and Aurelia Shugg claims she was baptised 18th May 1836. Well take a look at this. Mary Ann daughter of Samuel Shugg and Sarah (nee Nicholas) was baptised at St Ives 21st January 1821. Mary Ann Shugg age 16 was buried at St Ives 18th May 1836Take special note of the dates in bold. Somehow someone has gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick. They have a date for Mary Ann Shugg which they 'claim' to be a date of baptism. I would suggest that there were no parental links to this information and that the person has found a 'logical' family in which Mary Ann would fit nicely. From there the problem has escalated. CT
