Can anyone tell me where the word "matloe" for a sailor comes from? My older relatives never use the word sailor informally but use the word "matloe"- I found a surname "Matlow", was there perhaps and Admiral Matlow?
Thanks, M

Merci beaucoup! I never thought it could come from French!!! I wonder if it is not a word that came in during the Napoleonic wars perhaps?
You're a star! Thanks! M
