Matthew Trewhella was a member of on of the Wisconsin Regiments during the Civil War and I have had some trouble working out just who he was. I have copies of his Pension papers, records of him in various Census and also a copy of his Marriage Record from the Record Office where he was married. I probably have other data available to assist here but this is about starting the 'new thread'. I know that, from a combination of records, Matthew's age places his birth at some time within about a 10-15 year period. I now 'think' I know who he was but there is still information that casts some doubt. (e.g. - Father's surname recorded as Cornelius when Matthew was married.) I will clarify all of this as I move on but there is something else for all you 'Trewhella fans' to think about!

He filed for an invalid pension from South Dakota in 1891. He was born about 1825-30, and married to Mary of Norway. I would imagine you know all this, however! When do you first find him in the U.S.?

I am glad I started this new thread! Firstly, I did not have any of those 'arrival' details so they will all become useful. Secondly, it shows that a couple of you are very observant and seem to be 'avid fans' of the Trewhella side of things? Matthew's wife was Mary ARNDALE (or ARNDALL) and they were married at Mineral Point, Wisconson, July 13th 1867. And my understanding is that Matthew never actually 'fought' during the Civil War as I believe he was assigned to a Medical Unit. Can chase that up as I have copies of his Pension Papers here somewhere. Also have a photo of his 'headstone' but it is of no realy genealogical value. I believe the stone was placed, as with others in the same Cemetery, as part of an historical project some years ago. The 'stone' is a typical white marble 'military' marker with just a name and no dates or other information. I 'think' I have worked out who he probably was but will work more on that a little later. Meanwhile - here is a little info:- Enlisted Captain Devlin's Co., 30 Reg't Wis. Inf. (later known as Co. E, 30 Reg't Wis. Inf.) October 21st, 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin and stated that he was 28 years old. January 1st to January 22nd 1863 - Hospital attendant at Mayfield, Wisconsin. April 15th 1864 - transferred to V.R. Corps on orders from War Department. September 20th 1865 - mustered-out at Louisville, Kentucky. Enjoy.
