DAVY/DAVEY in Madron possibly Phillack

I'm clutching at straws now with this family:

My 2 x great grandmother Catherine (Kitty) DAVY/DAVEY was baptised 28 May 1809 Madron/Penzance, d/o John DAVY & Mary CRANE.

Looking for more information about her parents.

(Kitty married Richard BRAY in St Ives, 26 Jan 1833.)

Chris - you probably already know this but just for the record John DAVEY was a widower when he married Mary and they married by Licence.

John DAVEY, w., of Gwinear, & Mary CRANE, of Pz., lic. 21st March 1794 Madron

Using IGI as a starting point the only Mary Crane I can find:-

Mary d/o Benjamin and Amy Crane bp. 31st March 1765 at St Ives

But then she would have been 44 when she married so would have to be considered unlikely.

Can you tell us a little about Kitty Davey - e.g. when and where she was baptised?

Maybe I don't need so much - I think I just found Richard and Catherine in the 1851 Census at Lelant where Catherine stated she was age 42 and born at Madron.

That would mean she was born soon after the marriage if I have found the right family.

And I just found that I have Richard Bray already in my database although only with a wife named Catherine and a list of children.

So I have something to build on!

If you can answer a couple of these questions it will enable me to build a better picture of the family so that I might have a better chance of finding more information for you.

This is what I have:

John DAVY married Mary CRANE (possibly CARNE) on 21 Mar 1794 in Madron. (Groom a Widower; Groom's residence - Gwinear; Bride's residence - Penzance; by license.) Mary CRANE possibly d/o Benjamin & Amy CRANE bapt 31 Mar 1765 St Ives making her 29 at the time of her marriage. I've not been able to locate the earlier marriage for John although a Mary Davey was buried 3 Jun 1789 in Gwinear.

John & Mary DAVY had one known daughter: Catherine (aka Kitty) DAVY born about 1809 in Madron in Penzance, christened 28 May 1809 in Penzance, and died in 1900 in Redruth, aged about 91.

Catherine (Kitty) married Richard BRAY on 26 Jan 1833 in St Ives, son of Richard BRAY & Elizabeth ARTHUR. Richard was born abt 1809 in Phillack, was christened on 15 Jan 1809 in Phillack, and died in 1885 in Lelant, at age 76.

Catherine (Kitty) & Richard BRAY had seven children: Samuel, Elizabeth Ann (married Christopher MARTIN – my line), Thomas, Mary Jane, Christian, Nanny and John.

Richard & Catherine (Kitty) BRAY were residing at Bodriggy, Phillack at the time of the birth of their son Samuel in 1835.

Don't know about thoughts but I have one observation to make right now!

My brain must be in a real mess because I wrote in my last that Mary Crane would have been about 44 when she married John Davey.

In fact it was in 1809 when Catherine was born that she would have been 44 so things suddenly look a little brighter.

Been having another look at the family and I agree on the probability that all those children baptised at Gwinear belong to 'your' John and Mary.

I cannot find another marriage for John Dav(...) to Mary anywhere near the right place or time.

Naming a son Benjamin points to our correct identification of Mary Crane so I am happy with that.

The next problem seems to be the identification of John Davey's first wife.

Whilst further research is required I have come up with a fair possibility.

John DAVY m. Christian TREGILGAS 22nd May 1793 Gwennap

I can find only one child for this couple:-

Mary bp. 9th February 1794 Gwennap

Unfortunately I cannot yet find a burial for Christian but this certainly looks promising.

Thanks - I'll have a look at the Gwennap marriage and baptism but 1794 is the same year as John's second marriage, which sounds a bit too close and it doesn't tie in with the death of Mary DAVY in Gwinear. (A William DAVY was buried in Gwinear the same day as the Mary I mentioned, unfortunately no ages for either but I've tagged them as possibly mother and son, or brother and sister.)

It does 'look' a bit tight doesn't it.

Not so unusual for a second marriage to occur very soon after a first spouse died.

And it is possible that young Mary was not baptised until some time after her mother's death.

But then it was only a possibility so .......
